I'll be updating this post as described below and the Topic Description from time to time to reflect what it is I'm currently working on.

I'll reserve this 1st post with a list below that includes what page number you may find my various WIP model posts.

*About me: As a teenager, I became hooked from the early days of Rogue Trader back in 1986-1988 where I discovered a grim, dark and foreboding sci-fi future that pitted a fragile humanity at the mercy of an unforgiving and alien galaxy. Ever since, the world of Warhammer 40k has held my fascination from the time of my earliest scratch builds, be them deoderant converted grav tanks to Forge World kits, the hobby has never given me a dull moment nor respite from all the projects I wish to complete. Here, at last, is my attempt to put some of them on display for your enjoyment, comments and criticisms, or ridicule. All are welcome. Thanks in advance for stopping by and posting on my thread.

Ever since my son had this big oops moment: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=264492 I decided the cereal box version we had where the toes keep breaking off needed to be redone. We needed something more sturdy. So after browsing many threads of Warhound builds, I decided on the JSV Lucious model with some modification.

The 1st thing I did was eliminate the ankle joint and the lower leg with going with a design like I have below. Halfway through I realized that the pistons that will hold the lower leg conflicted with where the toe pistons needed to be. After some careful thought, it all came together. I have not seen a JSV build with toes and pistons like the one I am attempting, but I think it will work well when finished. The next step is to begin construction on the lower leg assembly and incorporate the tube into the box curved piece that will attach to the lower leg 1/2 inch pivot.

I used various model train round tubes for the pistons with push pins I stole from my wife's sewing kit. I used 1mm styrene for the foot itself as I wanted something sturdy there and then used 0.5mm for the toes and joints. I could have gone with 0.5mm all around as it appears to be sturdy enough and then wouldnt have had to use the Squadron White Putty to fill in the corners and seams.

If I was as detailed and skilled as Blackadder (whose work is phenomenal), then I might have altered the JSV plans with a ball joint for the Toes so they would articulate. But I'm trying to keep this project balanced between being detailed enough for me while also trying to get the project done within a few weeks. The detail I've used so far isnt good enough, it seldom ever is, but staying motivated and geting this completed on time necessitates certain creative sacrifices. I hope my decision on balance affords me the time to make it look good.

Oops, turns out I cant do blue and yellow. I have an Aliatoc craftworld to paint... Conflicting colors. Ill have to choose another. Ok small update after the medieval festival.

The blonde on the left is my wife. Zara is in the center, Eddie on the right.

The reason Im smiling so much is that Zara the spanish gypsy dancer has a hold of my bum. That girl's got an iron grip.

Here's the finished lower leg assembly... Edit: Just have to add the pistons and the middle leg to make sure it all has mobility.

Work is slow... RL issues. Getting back on track. I'm liking how the leg came together. It just all fits so far. I'm yet to make the rounded end caps for the octagonal knee joint, but that will come. I plan on using a slightly smaller endcap with rivets. I also have an idea on how to better trim up the toes. I'll be working on that soon. Here's the progress so far.

Just a minor update. Going to fabricate the upper leg and figure out the width of the middle and upper leg actuators.

1 - Does this whole thing move?

2 - Who cares, it looks great.

3 - I want to shamelessly mention I make chain mail =D

1 - All the Pistons are fully articulate. That being said, if I had planned on it walking it could, but I've decided on a final static pose where the ankle is permanently joined to the foot ball joint.

2 - Thanks. :P

3 - Zara seems would wear about anything and probably has. I've googled her and she's danced with fire, snakes, knives, and in oufits not appropriate to discuss on this forum.

@HellChyld: Thanks for the encouragement. Not a lotta comments on this thread. I'm not surprised. Everyone and their grandmother is doing a Warhound.

Another update. I need to make the rivets and the round caps for the knee joints, the feet trim and some panels and vents, but the leg is nearly done. One piece I've been able to reuse with varying success with different sized pistons is the metal looking spacer bead. It appears to be riveted and works quite nicely. I'm enjoying using them. Also I've gotten lazy with the piston connectors and have used bead push pin heads and 6mm bb's I stole from my son's airsoft gun, hehe. I'm finding them easy to work with and they will paint up good and appear functional. Good enough for me.

I'll either start on the above or move unto the waist or the other leg. Hell if I dont get motivated, I'll just finish everything but the last leg and call it instead of a Warhound, a Warhopper and be done with it. heh

I'm still wondering on a Legio...

Thats a hell of a lot of work, seems to be paying off though.

Keep it up :D

Thanks for the encouragement, Razblood. They do help believe it or not. I appreciate the kind words.

And yes it is a LOT of tedious work... Which is one of the several reasons I have stopped work on the project while I do some research. Im debating whether to cast the parts in resin. That is one reason I have only done the one leg and not the other. I had toyed with the idea for a while... and I think I'm going to do it. Im not planning on getting a pressure cooker, just make the molds and clean up whatever bubbles I end up getting afterwards. I've never cast parts before so Im gonna have to figure this one out from scratch.

In the mean time, the waist section is done. I used several prefabricated parts due to them having the proper size, and matching with what is already on my other warhound test model, so once detail has been added along with paint it should look good. Should, hehe.

Ok, so I've decided to cast these parts in resin to make more. I suppose one cant ever have enough warhounds running around... Here's an update on the likely final version of the toe... I'll perhaps drill a hole in the top near the front and drop in a magnet to change iconography... I plan on producing duplicate armor plates with magnets that may be swapped so I can go from having a chaos to loyalist warhound and back. So off to the hobby store tomorrow to buy resin, molding and mold release.

I went on Smooth-On.com's website and looked at a bewildering array of silicones, plastics, resins and urethanes... My there are some crazy choices... I finally decided on Mold Star 16 for the mold and the Smooth-Cast 321 for the plastic. There were so many other choices. I used youtube videos and best guesses to narrow the list. Price was also a factor. In the end I decided for trial versions of urethane plastic vs resin because of sanding toxicity and the 321 series for its price and quick cure time. The mold material was a much more difficult choice, but again I went for quick cure time, tear strength and price.

So now I'll need to finish the toes and the leg pieces along with all the trim and detail before I cast the final pieces. That will allow one mold of all the parts necessary to make one complete leg. I'll probably cast everything except the body and the shoulder sections. Everything else will probably be small enough to make casts. Time will tell.
