Olgerth Istaarn
I am painting some miscellaneous bits for my army. I don't normally paint, but I'm decent enough to touch up broken bits or paint an occasional simple weapon. The primary color is Mechrite Red (It's called Mephiston Red now, but I have an old pot). I noticed that the bits that I painted, while looking decent, also ended up quite glossy. The rest of my (commissioned) army is not glossy at all. I'm hoping varnish would help bring the gloss down, but I can't help wondering why this would happen and how I can avoid glossy-looking finish. Is it my technique or is it something about the paint? Brother Nihm
Most likely the paint. Is there any residue lodged in the bottle or has any of the layers 'split' / separated? Did you shake the pot properly before using it? I often find that even though a GW pot looks fine on the outside, you need to shake them well before use to keep the paint intact. Raphiel
One of the reasons I can think of is that you didn't shake the paint pot well enough. With some paints, especially the washes, you need to shake the pot for at least a minute or two. Otherwise the result might end up a bit glossy. What I would suggest is shake the pot Mechrite Red for a good two minutes, and paint over the same (glossy) parts again. This should leave you with a matt finish, as it is supposed to look. Olgerth Istaarn
:-[ ] I admit I thought at first that you two were joking (two minutes???) but did it anyway and shook the living hell out of that pot. And it made a world of difference. THANK YOU! Maybe while you're at it you can teach me how to properly use Griffon Gold? Bartali
If I remember rightly, Mechrite can dry a bit glossy. If the person who painted your minis used a matt varnish, then any slightly satin or glossy paints will contrast with a matt finish. I'd just paint some matt varnish over the areas you've touched up. Vallejo do a good range of gloss, satin and matt varnishes. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/265236-shiny-paint/#findComment-3231925 Share on other sites
Brother Nihm
Maybe while you're at it you can teach me how to properly use Griffon Gold?Try and mix it with a few drops of brown and use thinner layers than you are used to.See if it helps.
