Panzerbjørn
In 5th I usually fielded an all drop pod Logan's Heroes army, and I was thinking of returning to my Space Wolves after only playing Tau for the past year or so. The reserve rules say that ICs are attached to a unit after you see how many you can put in reserve (50% rounded up). Obviously, 50% rounded up of 1 (Logan) is 1, so he can join a squad, but what if I want two or three characters? It seems that I would need to keep one HQ choice on the table if I pick two. Is this correct, or is there something I have missed that would allow my to add Njal or a priest to the drop podding squads? ps. I did search both here and Official Rules, but I couldn't find anything relevant... pps. I just realised today that this year it is 20 years since I decided that Space Wolves were 'my' army ;-) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/265313-drop-pod-army-with-two-hq-choices/ Share on other sites
dswanick
The bit you're looking for is in the Deep Strike rules found on Pg.36 of the BRB: "Some units that must arrive by Deep Strike. They always begin the game in reserve and always arrive by Deep Strike. When working out how many units can be placed in reserve, units that must be deployed by Deep Strike (along with any models embarked upon them) are ignored", BRB, Pg.36 So a Drop Pod must be placed in Reserve, and must deploy using Deep Strike along with the models embarked in them - so do not count towards the 50% reserve limit. So long as all your ICs and packs are embarked in Drop Pods you can reserve 100% of your force. If you had one unit of Wolf Scouts in your army, they would have to deploy by Infiltration or normally as they don't have to start the game in reserve. Actually, scratch that last bit - if all you had was one unit of Wolf Scouts they could start in reserve due to the one half(rounded up) provision. If you had two units of Scouts then only one could Reserve. Panzerbjørn
Yes, that is true, but I am concerned about ICs. Page 124 of the BRB states Independent Characters are also counted as a single unit regardless of whether they have joined another unit or not. It seems to me that page 124, under the heading 'Reserves' indicate that the correct order is 1) See what can be in reserve and say what is in reserve 2) Assign ICs to squads in reserve. This is why I can't see anything that allows two HQ choices to start in reserve. If you had two units of Scouts then only one could Reserve. Except that in that case, you have both a HQ choice and the Wolf Scouts, out of which, only 50% can go in reserve. I think that because most people, myself included, attach their HQs to squads when they write their lists, and thus have overlooked that page 124 indicates that you only assign the HQ during deployment and after you have figured out what can be reserved. I couldn't find any clarifications about this in the FAQs for C:SW or the BRB, so it seems to be intended. Which would make me a sad bear... It's their being embarked on a Deep Striking transport which makes them not count.
