Core Grey Knights

Grey Knight Purifier

Recommended Posts

So, it has gotten to the point where my BT are unplayable, and honestly, I don't really enjoy being tabled every game. Therefore, I'm looking for very low model count Grey Knight Army Cores, with the intention of allying in my Templar's for a end game scoring unit. (Probably a Master of Sanctity and Blob Crusader squad in a LRC. (600 points, give or take)) So I'm wondering what the low model count GK builds are. I'm more interested in PA then Terminators, so what thoughts do you guys have?

??? Low model count GKs as in lose majority of games kind of build? That sort of army is going to suffer the same problem your BT have, so there is no point in doing that.

In any case, pick a strategy, some tactics you like the sound of, and the units you like and will help you enact your strategy. I outline my thoughts already in that gargantuan thread, so I refer you there for my opinion.

I'm looking for something similar but with a low count of actual grey knights as I want a custom built army, ie all converted, and the fun ones for converting/painting are the henchmen squads :)

I have been looking at dreadknights and storm ravens to help boost the points easily along with Paladins, points boosts that are still pretty useful. Theres a thread in here somewhere about the damage 3 dreadknights can do and they come to around 750pts on their own!

Paladinstar is pretty low model count, if that's your thing. Ignore those crying 'but Paladins suck in 6th'.

Otherwise, I'd be looking at Crowe and Purifiers. Strikes just don't do enough for Templars.

Your other option is plasma cannon spam with Coteaz, which is always amusing.

Well, Purifiers are definitely interesting to me. (It's in the username) , so lets focus on them. What role do they play? How would they support Black Tide Templar, with abundant Chaplains. Are they long/medium/short range? Point wise, where would you place them on a lethality scale? If I ever decided to go full GK, how we'll would they serve as a core.

They can do whatever you want them to do. They are equally lethal both at range or in close. For only 4pts more than a standard Strike Knight, you get +1A and LD, access to cheap upgrades, as well as anti-horde Cleansing Flame.

Put 4x Psycannons in the squad and make them fire support for your Sword Brethren.

Equip the whole unit with specialist force Halberds and Hammers, then throw them into close combat. S5, Initiative 6, 3 Force Weapon attacks on the charge, etc.

They are the best mid-field MeQ unit in the game. They provide fire support and counter-charge.

They would mainly be supporting your Land Raider push and your Assault Terminators.

They are 24" range, so you have to get into the mid-field to get in range. So, a Rhino or Running early on is advised.

They average around the price of Sternguard ~300pts for a properly equipped squad.

They aren't a core unit, Terminators, Henchmen and Strike squads are. Crowe is a terrible HQ, don't be lured into taking him. If you wanna go pure GK, a Grandmaster can make them scoring.

Here is the build you want for them. Add a Rhino if you wish.

Flame Knight w/halberd, Purifier w/hammer, 4 x Purifiers w/halberds, 4 x Purifiers w/psycannons

Flame Knight wins challenges, hammer is for smiting walkers (they lose to Terminators regardless, so no point spamming it), the remaining halberdiers provide the punch in melee to see off most Marine units. 'Cleansing Flame' prevents them getting tarpitted by chaff infantry. The quad psycannon is the reason to take them, the only other units to have it are PaladinStar (which is ludicrously expensive) and Purgators (which are a 5-man unit, at 10-man they cost the same to field quad psycannon but are far worse).
