Word Bearers Daemon Prince conversion

So I started making my Word Bearers force, and the basics go well, bar my own procrastination. I expect I'll have to use the LPC 2013 to get myself off my rear and get moving on a force at large, but that's another matter. Part of the reason I've procrastinated on the boots & bolters of my army is because I've been having too much fun with this Daemon Prince conversion:

Probably going to leave him armless because that's creepier, but I'm willing to take suggestions on how to go about covering the shoulder stumps. I was leaning at gluing the PA shoulders to the bare joints and leaving them that way, or possibly having some tiny vestigial hand sticking out from underneath, but I get the feeling that would be more comical than disturbing. And, of course, I need to finish painting him. Comments/thoughts?

Actually....you mentioning nids gave me an idea, but it might be too much. I could use a pair of lictor claws as its arms, with one bracing against the ground, and the other feeding a marine into the giant maw. For added fun, replace the tips with humanoid hands.

Giant claws and lots of tentacles would be good, but I think they are fairly obvious when it comes to trying to create something disturbing.

Perhaps you should go with your earlier instinct, and leave off the arms altogether. Maybe you could putty over one shoulder, and leave the other unfilled and distressed, a gaping wound with congealed blood and ichor gently dribbling out . . .

Ok so...after consideration I decided the finished model might need some more armor. One way or another I'm going to use the PA shoulder pauldrons and the little leg plates provided in the kit, but I feel like the model needs just a touch more armor, if for no other reason than to cast a shadow on what this monstrosity once was. I was thinking about greenstuffing some boots, but I've no idea where to start on that, and I'd also like to add more armor to his legs. Anyone have any good tips or links to someone who did this? I can't be the only one who wanted more armor on his DP.

As an aside to this, an idea came to me as I was typing out this post of adding some cabling snaking out from his head and 'neck.' If I do end up not putting any arms on him, I was thinking I could greenstuff a fleshy patch underneath the shoulders to make the pauldrons stand out a bit more, and giving the cabling some place to connect to.

I ended up finding an incredibly useful pair of bits that I turned into leg plates for this guy. I also ended up deciding to keep him armless, but added some greenstuff to bulk out his frame under the shoulder pauldrons. I have a concern that all this armor on the front of the legs makes the model look odd when viewing the back, but I don't know if that's just my imagination.

Oh and before he's done, I do plan on adding a good deal of parchment hanging from him, but I feel comfortable getting his paintjob up to speed first.

  • 1 month later...

Forgive me thread, for I have sinned, it has been one month since I posted any work on this conversion.

Ok but in all seriousness, been trying not to spend as much time on this model as I have before, focusing on my main army instead, and working on the Daemon Prince as a break from the monotony of painting squads. I have given his armor some highlighting, and added a few impurity seals (which will of course be covered in the words of Lorgar before this is over). The armor was washed in a 50/50 mix of Druiichi Violet and Agrax Earthshade, then highlighted first in Khorne Red, then 50/50 Khorne Red and Ushabti Bone, and finally the tiniest slivers of pure Bone. Afterward I glazed it in red. This is the most complex painting scheme I've ever attempted, and I'm planning to apply it to the whole army. Already got one test model who's been fully painted, and I'm actually quite proud of him. Also since the last update, I've washed all the blue skin areas and based the claws with Zandri Dust, and I've done all of the metallic edging and washed it with Nuln Oil. I started on the metallic highlights as well, with some Boltgun followed by Runefang (which I think is the new Mithril, actually not sure on that point, but I like how it looks). So far the plan is to give the claws the same paint scheme as the teeth, but that's more for lack of a better idea. Also not sure where I want to go with the tongue, so any suggestions there would be most welcome.

That's thing is weird, but I like it. It's like something that you would find waiting for you in a Lovecraft story. Who needs arms when you have a prehensile tounge.

Perhaps just give the young a couple of washes of different colours, maybe green, purple, and a little red, just to give it that odd but wet feel.

Hehe, thank you, I was trying to go for a weird look like that. I might try your suggestion for the tongue, but I'm concerned that it would end up looking too busy. One of the ideas I had was making the tip look like it was covered in fresh blood, using a gloss varnish. Worth trying? Or do you think that would end up looking horrible?

If you use the gw washes try applying them while the last wash is still a bit wet. Also mix in a bit of the medium stuff gw sells as I tend to find that it helps them blend. Also as your only using a wash if it looks horrible painting over wont make it look all thick.

I've seen people use one of the red paints mixed with water into a glaze, a wash of purple, and then a gloss varnish to make a good blood effect. Never tried it myself though.
