Australia banning rare-earth magnets

Recommended Posts

That probably depends on the minutiae of Australian law, and you would probably be better of asking a lawyer rather than an internet forum. However, I cannot imaging the Aussie government cracking down on gamers who only buy for personal usage...

Well, that's just it. If they are covered by the term I would suspect there'd be a lot of unhappy chappies down under. However, judging by the rest of the criteria, it seems personal usage might be the ray of light here.

(Disclaimer: I'm not familiar with Aussie law.)

Sounds like it wouldn't be illegal for you to BUY the magnets, but it might be illegal for whoever is shipping them from outside the country to sell them to you.

Of course, the way around that is simply to package and label them as intended for use as tools, computer supply, or what have you.

This is one of the biggest problems of today, rather than teaching responsability, just make it impossible to make the mistake. I remember GS couldn't be sold in Oz for quite awhile until hazard warnings and detailed instruction were included. Increased awareness with mandatory warnings should've been they way here.

GAAAAAHHHHHHHHH.

JONO

I'm no physicist, but after a quick brush up on my magnetics I believe that the magnets that we use for modelling may not be included in this ruling as the magnetic flux will be less than 50. (I did a quick check on a 3mm x 1.5mm N40 rare earth and it came to 34.56 if I got it all right) Maybe the largest ones that we use on tanks etc may come close... I'll have a look see and try and work it out. (If anyone wants to tell me what the largest magnet they would probably use was??)

<Edit>

Oops. I think I was using the wrong numbers.... BUT... the correct answer (if I am indeed correct..) is a lot less than that, it would be 1/10 of my previous answer... 3.456 Wb (I believe this is the correct SI term)

<Edit...Again> Dammit forgot to work out the surface area... The answer is 10.8 Wb. Goddamn man. At least I think I'm doing it right... :/

Isn't this the country where they have poisonous critters all over? Seems like the last thing I would be worried about is people swallowing magnets. If the teen is that stupid they are probably licking cane toads too. :)

Ehh, OK.

Now this might be a totally radical (and uninformed) idea but,

What about keeping magnets away from your children instead of this? :)

I know, right!?

"Here you go kids, play with these magnets.... NO!! Don't swallow them Timmy!!!!!!!!"

Can we not have one continent where natural selection is allowed to improve the human species???

Exactly!!!!! I'm not saying kill the stupid ones, just let nature take it's course.

On topic, I hope the above calculations of strength are correct, and the magnets I use will be unaffected by these new laws.

Cheers,

Jono

Well I'm fairly certain I'm right from what I could find on calculating magnetic flux... Just don't be all like "Well Skittle said..." if you get charged with something down the line. I'm sure there's gotta be a real physicist on here somewhere, I mean, we are all nerds here... :)

Magnets cause global warming, right?

If you eat a magnet and you don't have your arse cleaned by someone else still then you deserve excrutiating pain and inevitable death. This is, as has been noted, natural selection and to tamper with it is to tamper with the laws of nature.

I say rise up against this stupidity and allow stupid Australians to choke on magnets if they so choose!

Is this going to stop me from ordering magnets from ebay stores in Australia? I've been getting my n50s from back to base-ix and they're my favourite place to get them.

e;

"The magnets appear harmless and may be potentially mistaken for small ball bearings or cake decorations. Warnings on packaging are likely to be ineffective because once the product is removed from its packaging, the magnets themselves carry no warning" the Minister explained.

Pretty sure if your kids are eating ball bearings you have way bigger problems than rare earth magnets but that might just be me

Once again, I find myself sending condolences and expressions of sympathetic outrage to my 40k fellow travellers in Oz.

I remember the first time I saw magnets sold as children's toys. The "toy" consisted of two magnets, each the size of a Jolly Rancher and shaped like a throat lozenge. "Jeezus Aytch Keerist!" I thought to myself, "All it needs is a sugary cherry flavoring to be the most perfect child's toy EVER!"

And now an entire country of gamers will have to seriously explain why their model tanks need interchangeable turrets to some disinterested Customs commando.

As an Australian myself, I find this downright disgusting. The specific wording of the notice bans all use for construction or modelling kits. The explaination provided by the deputy minister on what it does not ban is as follows:

This ban is intended to have a narrow focus by only banning small high powered magnets which are marketed or supplied for use as toys or for one of the other specified uses. It does not ban small high powered magnets used for industrial, commercial or scientific applications. It does not impact upon small high powered magnets which are components in household electronic goods and it does not prevent sets of small high powered magnets being used in educational institutions for teaching purposes.

So household electronic goods that are not toys, industrial/commercial use, or medical/scientific use. And educational purposes.

Any teachers or lecturers out there? Teach in a field that may require the use of magnets? Go right ahead and buy some anyway.

Everyone else is out of luck.

Solved. Warhammer models are not toys but but in fact models used in a stylized form of mental exercise designed to improve critical thinking and decision making.

WHAM... EDUCATIONAL!

Nice. :)

They banned some magnet toy in the US for the same BS reason. One or two unsupervised kids someplace ate the magnets and ended up with perforated intestines. IIRC, the ban almost or successfully put the manufacturer out of business. The US is the Land of the Lawsuit, not the Land of Personal Responsibility. Apparently, it's spreading to the rest of the world.

Of course it is spreading- there is no money in 'personal responsibility.'

At this rate, we'll make Neanderthals look like genius's in couple of decades.... Incidentally, the fact we are destroying natural selection pretty much everywhere or changing it to "survival of the stupid" did come up in an archaeological though seminar last week.
