Apahllo
So I'm putting together an army of wolves and I was wondering everyone's take on lone wolves. How to run them and how they should be used in game? Equipment is pretty expensive for a single model, but its an awesome idea to have a one man killing machine. I play against a lot of ig, tau and nurgle and I think I could really benefit from a lone killer. Shaggy12009
I like to run twin claws and power armor for 60 points. He's cheap, effective, and forces an awkward decision. Do you leave him alone and let him make his points in a single charge, or kill him and miss out on the kill point. It's not as cool as 5th ed since there is only one kill point mission, but its still fun. dswanick
Marked PA Lone Wolf w/ 2X Plasma Pistols and 2 Fen.Wolves = 85pts. Arghh factor > points efficiency. Russ Brother 92
I normally run two - one twin wolf claws & tda, the other is th/ss & pa :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/265829-lonewolves/#findComment-3238278 Share on other sites
Thunder_god
I'm building a TDA Lone Wolf with magnetized arms, so I can switch between a chainfist & a power axe. Other arm will be a storm shield. Two wolfs based off the plastic thunder wolves tagging along with him. Wulfebane
IMO, you have two routes for Lone Wolves. Distraction or Tarpit. Ultimately, no matter what you arm a LW with, they can very nearly accomplish both of these roles depending on your playstyle. I generally prefer a distraction LW; always in TDA w/ SS.. anything after that is preference/opponent-based. For tarpitting, and just all-around fun and melee destruction, I like the PA w/ motw + 2x pp + 2x fen wolves. Might seem like a lot of points, but if you can keep him in cover and/or take all his wounds from the fen wolves til he reaches melee, then more often than not he makes up his points. Raulmichile
I equip him with TDA Storm Shield and Thunder Hammer or Chain Fist. He can be simply gross in small games, almost unkillable in one or two turns. My opponent needs to focus a lot of effort to take him down or otherwise live with him thorning his side. I like him a lot in battles below 1500 pts. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/265829-lonewolves/#findComment-3238448 Share on other sites
Apahllo
I had tremendous fun with claws and wolves in a rhino. Did EPICLY. Killed a PC havoc squad, then drew plenty of fire. Most fun I have had with a single unit since I ran plasma/bolt pistol vets. I'm seriously considering running 2. Maybe in drop pods.. thor1234
I go TH/SS TDA point in the general direction of the enemy, even if he dies he usually absorbs tons of damage! and if he doesnt die he just beats face..... for 85pts hes a bargain to back up my footslogging GH squads Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/265829-lonewolves/#findComment-3238643 Share on other sites

Pay for a droppod on one of my grey hunter squads and opt not to deploy them in it. Just as you would a rhino. Or is this not possible? It was my understanding that you can pay for a transport and choose which unit can gets in. Wulfebane
A dedicated transport has to already be deployed on the table for another unit to "steal" it and they can only do so as early as their first movement phase. This isn't possible for drop pods. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/265829-lonewolves/#findComment-3239062 Share on other sites

I have to deploy it first and then state that its not going to be used by the unit that bought it and my lone wolf is going to be in it. Or move my lone wolf into it at the start of my first turn? Only the unit for which a Dedicated Transport is bought can start the game Embarked in it. Any other unit must start the game deployed near it, and Embark in it in the first Movement phase. beerbeard
I like to use them as a counter-charge, protection from deepstrike unit. I played a game where 5 DW terminators dropped in right next to Long Fangs, but before they could charge out came my lone wolf with SS/CF. He killed 3, and had the decency to die on their turn, so I shot the other two to oblivion. He has also sunk in to a Ork Boyz mob and challenged the Warboss, killing him on the spot. Just remember, they don't have to charge across the field to be effective. Brom MKIV
OP- lately ive been considering tda/ss + motw 75 pts and considering the opponents you mentioned I think this build could do well for you, well maybe not nurgle so much. Still hes a great tarpit and pretty good at killing medium to light infantry, something my chainfist LW really isnt good at. Marked PA Lone Wolf w/ 2X Plasma Pistols and 2 Fen.Wolves = 85pts.Arghh factor > points efficiency. Thats a seriously cool build man, especially since he rerolls those plas shots vs dreads/MCs.
