Jimmi's Heresy Sons of Horus

Hi people,

Ive just started a heresy era Sons of Horus army alongside my existing 40k World Eaters. I'm still tweaking my army list however, i thought i'd begin with a couple of tactical squads in rhinos and a couple of centurions before expanding with terminators and jetbikes. Ill evetually be using Abbadon and Justaerin but am eagerly awaiting the models to be released first. Anyone who has followed my World Eaters will know that i do a fair few conversions and my painting progress is painfully slow. The idea with the Sons of Horus is that any conversions are minimal and and my paint scheme will be a little less perfect and OCD.

Ive had a Deimos rhino and 5 mark III marines laying around since last christmas so i finally got them prepped and based. Ive spent the last month testing paint schemes. Originally i tried to use the same paint recipe as Daemon Prince Dargor over on his pre heresy log, however i had my Vallejo USMC green go AWOL at royal mail (yet again) then couldnt get a good colour match once my replacement arrived. In the end, my recipe uses the basecoat from Forgeworlds official painting guide, with slightly different washes and battle damage stages. If anyone is interested i'll post the recipe but for now, i'll not.

I could'nt resist a little conversion of Sevrin loth into a Sons of Horus librarian top accompany an assault squad, which may or may not be fluffy, but to be honest, i dont care and will invent some relevent fluff. As of yet i have no arms for him but all my models will be magnetised allowing lots of list variations.

Pics so far only show base coated rhino and mkIII troops, however im halfway through applying chips so will have better pics soon.

Enjoy,

All comments and crit is welcomed :( (except argueing the fluffiness of my Librarian :))

EDIT - Props to Daemon Prince Dargor for the helmet spikes.....i cheekily copied his as they look cool.

Just a quick little update. Only got a few hours in this weekend, however i managed to basecoat my librarian and add some paint chips. Detailing and some weathering still to do, hopefully tonight. Apologies for the grainy images, we have no light here at the minute so all photos are shot under interior lighting.

How did I miss this? Looking good so far dude. Are you going for an early, post-Ullanor light sea green or will it be a dark and weathered Betrayal feel? Also, the use of the spare contemptor foot on the base is ingenious, I might have to copy that idea since I have plenty leftovers.

Cheers! :)

Thanks for all the feedback guys, always appreciated. Im glad you all like the contemptor foot, there must be a few floating around people bits boxes. Feel free to use the idea, its good to share.

Hopefully have some more pics up in the next day. Painting this evening to make up for a lack of it tonight so hopefully the Sevrin conversion will be done soon.

@DaemonPrinceDargor -By all means copy the contemptor foot, ive borrowed enough of your ideas from time to time. I got sick of looking at the spare contemptor feet and they seemed perfect for the model. The old "foot on a rock" pose seems a bit daft. Also, it provides a nice connotation (with hindsight) to have the sevrin loth model resting his foot on a giant foot.

As for the green colour, i tried to use your new darker recipe but couldn't get a decent match. I experimented with the Basecoat recipe from FW's official guide, and i've ended up with a colour that sits between the earlier Sons of Horus scheme, and the new "official" darker green. I'm happy with it but its more a result of luck than intent! I pre mixed 4 pots worth of basecoat so it should last for a while at least.

On a related note, what a are people feelings around using Sevrin Loth as a master of Signals instead of a Librarian. Or does head apparel look too much like a psychic hood, rather than an elaborate communcations device? Looking at ways to use the model nut not as a librarian. Still unsure of the fluffiness of a Sons of Horus librarian but would like one in my list.

Cheers

I think you should go with him as a Librarian. I don't recall Horus being particularly anti-psyker, and once he'd broken away from the Imperium, he wouldn't feel compelled to obey the Edicts of the Emperor any longer, I guess. I think it'd make much more sense if he decided to use every resource he had, and reinstated his Librarians.

These guys look great, well done.

On the Librarian question I'd go with the Master of Signals as the Sons of Horus came into being around the same time as Nikaea. I'm not sure there are specific dates but we know it was only shortly before Davin that the changed from the Luna Wolves and Librarians had almost certainly already been banned before Horus was injured.

Like you said, it's your army and rule of cool wins but it seems a shame for such a nice force not to be 'fluffy'. Either way keep up the good work.

Regards,

Cleal

On the signals/librarian, well, it's not like Horus was a big fan of playing by the rules!

I agree with this thoughtful chap here. Go for it that Librarian :) He'slooking magnificent already, by the way.

Hi all,

Bit of a delay with updates due to a hectic week. To top it all off my broadband has been down all week (thanks Sky!) so im having to post this quickly from my work PC.

Progressed slightly with the librarian, just have scrolls and base to finish. Pics a little dark and blurry due to Yorkshire lighting. Also please ignore horrific purple colour of contemptor foot.....it was an experiment.

No time to post answers to specific posts as i dont want to get caught at work (apologies im not being rude) however recipe is as follows.....

1) Basecoat - 25% Sotek green, 25% Castellan Green, 25%Dawnstone, 25% Nurgling Green. I just bought a pot of each and mixed them together. Then usinga couple of mixing pots make the following mixes....

2) Highlight 1 - Basecoat with 20% extra dawnstone

3) Highlight 2 - Highlight 1 Mix with 20% extra dawnstone.

4) Wash with Bieltan green

5) Nuln Oil to deep crevasses.

6) The chips are 50% black, 50% Administratum grey sponged on with blister pack sponge and additional fine scratches by brush.

7) Chip highlights painted onto bottom edge using Highlight 2 mix and about 40% extra codex grey (possibly administratum grey)

Hope that helps, its basically a tweaked version of the "official" FW guide. Be warned, basic cost of paints is about £18 if i remember to buy enough to mix up all layers. You will also need some empty pots which bizarrely, GW dont seem to sell any more. Very useful of them indeed.

I like the base, with him standing on that, he looks about a foot taller.

Sorry had to say it.

Boom!

Love the work so far, maybe we could get some higher res pics to show off the awesome paint job?
