building a company - raven guard blog

-Intro-

I first started out with my Red scorpions but finding it hard to get stuff for them made me take another route. I decided to change chapter. I was listening to deliverance lost and did som research during listening to it. and found out that raven guard are really a chapter for me. I love black armour. I looked at black templars but decided these guys just didnt cut it for me, way to regligious for my liking. So Raven guard it is. i love their combat doctorine and really want to make a really fluffy army with plenty of droppods, assault marinesand scouts.

I soon made the choice of using ALOT of droppods. I like the model and the ability to drop a unit practicly where ever you want on the table make it even harder for me to resist.

-The goal-

Since i need goals in live planning on going for a full company was the best possible route for me to go. But since FW,GW and BL messed up the company colours and heroes leading them im basing them on ultra marines to be on the save side and that means im starting with a 4th company (green shoulder rims)

I really wanted to break up the black armour and since all my cables will be red gren was the second best choice to go for.... lead my kayvaan shrike

-pre work-

-Decals

being lazy i decided to make my own decal sheet for the raven guard. Based on an exsisting one i found over here at bolter and chainsword. I remodified it to hold more decals and resized most of them to fit the shoulderpads better. I will have to order either shoulderpads or decalsheets from forge world since they just look better then mine. but for the time being they will be good enough.

The sheet including refitting on shoulderpads took me a whole day in total and here is the result

The spot left blank on the image is intentional, i still need to fill it with stuff

- Jumppacks

I really like pre-heresy jumppacks so the step to making them myself where a pretty easy one. i soon found a tutorial on these -rather large- jumppacks and made a test one for my HQ -see later pictures-

-Work in progress Kayvaan Shrike-

as said earlier, the company is led by kayvaan Shrike and so decided to start of woth the conversion of that guy. this is the result, please not hes using th preheresy jumppack i told you about earlier.

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/raven%20guard/100_3708.jpg

As you can se he is a total conversion, i actually bought a finecrap model but returned it to the shop asking my cash back (my granny makes better casts)

and went on the conversion route as soon as i got home, ok hes missing some raven guard tokens and insignia's bit otherwise hes looking okay in my opion.

-work in progress (tactical squad I) -

Starting of whit the special weapons guy in the squad, the plasma guy. The painting of black armour is pretty straight forward. decals had some fidly bits but anything else is just a walk in the park.

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/raven%20guard/100_3709.jpg

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/raven%20guard/100_3710.jpg

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/raven%20guard/100_3711.jpg

http://i1253.photobucket.com/albums/hh593/warhammerpaintservice/raven%20guard/100_3712.jpg

The decals are a bit hard since they need a white background -and the armour is black - so iu used a little trick there, just paint a white blob where the white is going to be and then dump the decal on top of that, works great!! Also the tactical squad signt eed to be redone, messed up a bit there, but still looking decent

Well thats it for mow.... Comments, Crittiques and Questions are always welcome!

Don't the Raven Guard use shoulder trim to denote squad type rather than company number? That would mean Shrike wouldn't have a trim colour, and as far as I know, shadow-captains have white shoulderpads anyway. Long story short, your minis your paint make 'em octarine if you want.

  • 3 weeks later...

After spending last night with a fair bit of insomnia i decided to device a new black pattern for my Raven Guard.

and after a few trials and errors i found out this was the best result. I really hate the way GW lits up thir highlights and im always looking for a more neutral approach on the subject. The big plus is that you dont have th really sharp edges (which imo look horrible!) but a more subtle toning, making the highlights looking more neutral Bad thing if you have a bad camera (like me) but in real life it looks great!

This is what i came up with:

1. Spray undercoat black

2. Broad highlights Raven Guard Grey *

3. Nuln Oil Wash

4. Fine highlight of 50/50 Raven Guard Grey/ Standard Mechanicus

5. Final highlight of Standard Mechanicus

6. Glaze Abaddon Black

7. Touch up any mistakes with Abaddon Black

* is a mix 50/50 mix Eshin Grey/ Abaddon Black

Also did some work on my decals before printing.

Result of a few hours fitting and clipping

To be printed on white

To be printed on transparent

Marking still a Work in progress (looking for pics with personal heraldies (raven skulls ravens etc)

since there is always a need to start with one squad, i decided to start of with my dvastators.

The squad look like this

1x vet sergeant

4x marine with lascannons

1x droppod

The vetran sergeant is almost done so i tought id share a few pics with you all.

@Sqallum: Im trying to do 1 model a day so i hope to show you some more pics duing the day

@Gearhart: wow thx for the compliments! ill try to keep it up!

@SacredBoltgun: the black isnt really that hard to be honest, finding the right colours to make it look good takes some time.

@Scoones: hehe thank you! Imo shrike should really have a big pre-heresy jumppack.

@Nasha: skintone was really easy. i am using the reaper triad 'fair skin' with a drop of white added to all 3 steps

-progress-

Yesterday i had a bit of an off day painting wise, i quit smoking -which is good since im now saving 5euro's a day for my hobby- and to keep my mind of smoking i went for painting a marine with lascannon for my devastator squad. problem is im a bi shakey at the momnt, so the mini doesnt look as nice as the last one

any how here are some pics of my latest progress.

With that question ill leave you all for today !

offcourse C7C are always welcome

youve done a great job bringing out that white on the black back drop. must have taken a lot of coats to get it to that standard. loving the pale skin and dark eyes on the helmetless marine too very good representation of raven guard

also those bases are awesome how did you do them?

i really like how they came out since i was expecting them to ble either really colourfull blobs of plastic or the way they are now.

im not to happy about the bases yet, but they are surely redone. Tonight im starting my new project, the droppod for this unit so ill keep you all updated.

I always love seeing good Raven Guard models & these are great. Love the targeter-less lascannons. Makes them look very sleek. I especially love the pic with the first lascannon. The guy's head is turned like he's saying "Yeah. That just happened."

Thx !! for some reason the the lascannons do look better then with targeters (which i found btw) i always try to mak at least one of my models in squads look "funny" that way you never get bored looking at them.

As I am currently in the middle of reading Deliverance Lost I am really liking the Raven Guard that you are building. Every time I read one of the HH novels it always makes me want to make a squad of the legion that is in the book, unfortunately or fortunately I don't have the time or money to do all of them so I will keep growing my AL army and living vicariously through y'all's builds. Great job and I can't wait to see more of your work.

-UPDATE-

Kinda grew tired of looking at the bases fro my devstator squad so i tried to make a new concept for my bases

theme of the bases is a flagstone base with parts of ruined bases. im thiniking about using my molding experience to make some plaster casts from them so i can mass produce them fairly quikly

Tell me what you guys think :)

@coldwinter: thanks!!! i have no clue whow they will do against nightlords none of my mates play nightlords (yet!) and indeed the next project will be my HQ's That being said its going to be a converted librarian and a converted shrike the one on top of this thread, but repainted with the new way i paint black.

The librarian will be a this one but stripped down and reposed

(might even make him kneeling or a nice action pose)
