Validar
Hey folks. A dedicated Blood Ravens player and Salamander painter now going chaos! Starting out with the Dark Vengeance set and going from there, here is what I have thus far: Lord and Master of the Warband: Shar the Cold. Cynical and precise, he was a feared gangleader recruited less than a year before the descruction of Nostramo: http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-17000312.jpg http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-17000328.jpg http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-17000339.jpg The white faceplate denotes him as a veteran and honored member of the warband, something you do after you've proven your worth to the warband and its leader. Speaking of which: Shar refused to paint his faceplate white for a long time, in spite of his skill and worth being proven over and over again. He adopted the sign of honor when he defeated the last Lord, Thar the Reckless. What happened to him, you say? Here you go: http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16234555.jpg The pain of the engine drove Thar to the edge of madness and beond. For the entertainment of the crew, but possible also for Shar to show his dominance, Thar has often been placed in the lowest part of the warband's stolen Strike Cruiser where the Gellar Field is too unstable to keep the warp completely at bay. This has lead to terrible mutations and even further madness for the old Lord. I'm pretty proud of his fist - guess how I did it! http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16234645.jpg Amongst the Warband's Elite is the last remnants of the First Claw of the 15th company of Night Lords, where most of the warband's members were drawn from. Veterans of ten thousand years of battle they have earned the priviledge to pick their own wargear exactly as they wish to, which means the squad members are very different in their choice of weaponry: http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16234907.jpg In the middle is the Claw's current leader: Morah the Faithless. Known for his exceptional hatred towards the ecclisiarch and all of their kin he brings fury upon all those bearing "holy" marks of the emperor in battle. He is also known for his distaste for chaos worship. It is said that he took the head from an aspiring Dark Apostle in a fight alongside the Word Bearers. Though the Host was furious they could not bring any evidence to the deed and thus it was left at that. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16234953.jpg In the middle is the squad's newest member. A murder from a small world of the outer rim. The Night Lord's warband had been hired to raid a few worlds there to prepare for a larger invasion of Dark Eldar looking for slaves. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16235155.jpg The remnants of the 3rd Claw, usually too small to be deployed alone. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16235055.jpg The remnants of the 5th claw. All close combat specialists they are known to have a slight distaste for the 3rd claw, though it is a fact that the precise shots of the 3rd combined with the aggressive prowess of the 5th has won the warband many a victory and the two Claws are usually deployed together. With the prefered tactic being fear and terror, the shape of the worlds the Warband assaults are usually changed radically. Anarchy rules the streets and fire burns on every building. On K'tar VI the Warband found a man who had fully embraced the chaos the warband had visited upon his world. Some say that he was a lowly administratum adept who had spend most of his life as a tiny splinter of the imperial administration, doing the same meaningless things day after day until the Night Lords arrived. It is said he adopted the iron mask and spend his days terrorising anyone and anything that could get in his way. It is said when the warband actually arrived to the city where he had worked, the streets were already burning and people were cowering behind their closed doors, praying to their emperor, while criminals and murderers used the terror to rob, beat and murder as they pleased. As the story goes, the ragged, masked terrorist had approached the vanguard of Night Lords, who were laughing at the destruction, and said in a firm voice, with practiced High Gothic: "Ave Dominus Nox" http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16234125.jpg Whatever the story, it was decided that he was to accompany the Space Marines with a warband of his own. Whenever the warband reaches a new world, this band of humans walks in the wake of the destruction, savouring the anarchy and chaos of the battle, while any criminal or murderer hardened enough to stand against them is also a potential recruit. Thus the members of this human group is in constant flux, people dying and being recruited constantly. Only one thing defines them: They love the chaos. They only feel truly alive when the world is burning around them. And they are willing to do whatever they must to be allowed to follow the one group that can produce this like no other: The Night Lords. http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/ae80/ninyg/2012-11-16234344.jpg
Wicced
i like your bone color :P since this is hall of honor, i guess they're finished. but if they're finished where is the lightning? this way they might as well be horned ultramarines with baroque armor... Validar
The Lightning is something I might look into at a later time. If I do them they must look good, some half-hearted attempt just won't cut it. So if I can't do it in a really good looking way, this is where they'll land. The base color is Necron Abyss, which is way darker than anything an ultramarine would wear. They should also stand out well enough as Night Lords when project part 2 is done: 10 Raptors 5 Warptalons (leader on four legs Lucoryphus style is my thinking) A Heldrake converted by GuitaRasmus (who really knows how to convert chaos stuff)
MagicMan
but if they're finished where is the lightning? this way they might as well be horned ultramarines with baroque armor... Lol, bit rude mate? Maybe Validar doesn't like the lightning look. Im not a fan of it. I think they look great, buddy. The chosen especially! Its such a shame that they make the old Chaos Space Marines look desperate for a re-sculpt!
Brother Nihm
Ah but you cannot have Night Lords without the lightning. Great job so far Monsieur Validar.
Kol Saresk
But Xarl didn't have lightning. And Xarl was cool...

Wicced
upon rereading my first comment, i realize it might be considered rude, that was not my intention and i apoligize! what i wanted to express is that without lightning or the winged skull symbol of our legion, they're just dark blue chaos marines and like brother Nihm said, you can't have night lords without lightning  another thing i spotted, the tongue of the DV chosen with the distinct ribcage looks like it's just painted like his armour. is that intentional or just the picture? Validar
oh, the tongue... Well spotted Wicced. First of all I took no offense in your first comment - the internet can make you seem rude even though most people aren't trying to be :) Now, the tongue will need some color! The reason why I havn't got to that (now that I remember) is that I considered painting the entire chestplate differently, but I feared that it would make him stand out too much and make it look like he wasn't part of the army. Kol Saresk
That's a tongue? I thought it was a sternum. :) I mean like seriously. I was looking at the DV set unpainted and I thought the whole thing was part of the ribcage. Huh. At least now I know why it was so puffed out. Wicced
yeah it's a tongue, i only know, because i keep turning him over in my hands since a week or so, trying to find out what to do with it :)
facmanpob
I think they look very good. If I was to make some constructive comments I would suggest looking at doing some highlights on the shoulder pads of the Chosen. There is a lot of detail on the shoulder pads, but its not that apparent in the photos as it sort of blends in to the rest of the model. You could try a light drybrushing of a slightly lighter shade of blue just ot help pick them out. Otherwise I think they look lovely :)
Kol Saresk
@Wicced: Yeah, I went straight over to the mini, actually looked at it and sure enough, it is a tongue. Huh. Maybe I need to pay more attention to detail. For highlights, I don't know if you are using GW paints but Enchanted Blue makes for a nice subtle highlight while Ice Blue can be used for more of a "pop out" highlight. Although to be fair, is there enough room on some of the DV models, more specifically the Chosen, to do highlights and lightning?
Brother Ambroz
My advice is just to find a spare piece of armor from a land raider or rhino to practice lightning on. Gives you lots of room to practice. On a side note, how'd you get Guitarasmus to convert a Helldrake for you?!??!

Validar
Hehe, Lightning may be the next step. They all got a drybrush of enchanted, but the black shade tones it down a lot. IMO you do not want Night Lords too bright, for the Ultramarine confusion presented earlier. Still pondering on those shoulders, thanks for some input, especially the bolter marine shoulder is bothering me. GuitaRasmus is a good friend of mine and we're both members of a danish wargamer society where we spend a lot of time discussing fluff (which we both enjoy immensly) while I try to teach him a bit about the game and he tries to teach me a bit about the paint and brushes. We've even made quite a battle rapport you can check out if you like. GuitaRasmus is quite the fotographer and I like writing fluff pieces. Though this is all off the record, ofcourse, official explanation is ofcourse terror and fearmongering
Kol Saresk
His army actually see combat? That is awesome! Sorry about your Grey Knights. In a comradely player-to-player kind of way. As a Night Lord I'm jumping up and down with murderous glee.
