Khorne's Eternal Hunt: World Eaters and some Traitor Guard

Hey, everyone. While I am here, I might as well show you something painted, right? msn-wink.gif So let me show you the painted part of my World Eaters army so far.

I’ve always been drawn to the Ruinous Powers, especially to Khorne, so after getting back into the hobby, it quickly became clear to me that I didn’t have any choice but to build and paint an army of World Eaters. That was the birth of Khorne’s Eternal Hunt. Here’s a sneak peek:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/29/406710-Army%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.jpg

What you see above are all the World Eaters I have managed to get painted up until now. There’s quite a bit more (unpainted) stuff where this came from, but for today, let’s focus on the finished part of my army. I’ll walk you through a couple of pictures and tell you what I did and why. Here goes:

My World Eaters' background is that they are the remnants of the 12th Astartes legion's 4th assault company. While most of the legion fractured into small warbands after the Skalathrax campaign, the 4th still functions as a fairly coherent fighting force. And even though this force is reasonably similar to other World Eaters’ forces all over the galaxy, there’s one marked difference: The legionaries of the 4th are still clinging fiercely to their martial honour, a remnant of their past as the Warhounds Astartes legion. They feel that it is only their honour that still gives them purpose, and so they are eternally trawling the galaxy for powerful warriors and worthy prey, a never ending hunt in the service of the Blood God – hence “Khorne’s Eternal Hunt”.

But enough with the fluffy parts, let’s take a look at some models, shall we?

First up are my regular berzerkers, the “Huntsmen”. I’ve got two squads of these painted at the moment:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/22/404563-Berserkers,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Khorne,%20Warhammer%2040,000,%20World%20Eaters.jpg

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/22/404564-Berserkers,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Khorne,%20Warhammer%2040,000,%20World%20Eaters.JPG

As you may be able to tell, some of these models are still from my earlier hobby years, so the paintjobs may look a little dated. Still, I tried to add small conversions here and there to spice things up a bit: Both squads have an icon bearer (I am of the firm opinion that every squad in a CSM army should have an icon bearer, even in those cases where it doesn't give them any advantages rules-wise) and I built two skull champions with power fists (sadly, with the new rules’ focus on issuing challenges, these guys won’t be nearly as useful as they used to be…).

Then there are these guys, the “Lost Brethren”:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/22/404565-Berserkers,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Khorne,%20Mutations,%20Possessed,%20Warhammer%2040,000.JPG

These were built quite a few years ago but only painted last year. I had originally intended them to serve as Possessed. However, with the more recent plastic Possessed released by GW, these guys look quite tame by comparison, so they end up being used as normal berzerkers as often as not. All of these were converted using Khorne berzerkers and parts from Ork boys and the old chaos mutation sprue.

The basic idea behind them is that those legionaries beginning to show too many signs of physical or mental corruption are singled out by the officers of the 4th, in an effort to keep the madness at bay and keep the company functioning as more than a band of frenzied madmen. The Lost Brethren are used as a vanguard, giving them a final chance at an honourable death before corruption takes them. They have to die, so that the company may live…

With Chaos Spawn once more a viable unit selection, I also began to think about legionaries whose combat prowess or mutations made them so powerful that they would survive those suicide missions, allowing them to mutate even further. Thus the Forsaken were born:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/14/431172-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Chaos%20Spawn,%20Conversion,%20Forsaken,%20Khorne,%20Spawn.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/14/431173-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Chaos%20Spawn,%20Conversion,%20Forsaken,%20Khorne,%20Spawn.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/14/431175-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Chaos%20Spawn,%20Conversion,%20Forsaken,%20Khorne,%20Spawn.JPG

This guy is my test model for the Forsaken. I want them to look like even more devolved Astartes and less like the creepy crawly monsters Chaos Spawn are normally depicted as. The model was built using bitz from the Vargheist/Crypt Horror kit and some arms from the WFB Minotaurs. I am currently working on the other members of the squad.

Then there's my jump infantry:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/5/25/369980-Assault,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Conversion,%20Harriers,%20Jump%20Infantry.JPG

The “Harriers” are the 4th assault company’s dedicated corps of jump infantry. I always felt that Raptors were a fantastic – and very fluffy – addition to any World Eaters’ force, so I built these using parts from the berzerker and CSM kits as well as Pre-Heresy style jump packs courtesy of MaxMini.

These were built before the new plastic Raptors were released, of course (I got a box of those right away!), but I still hope they’ll hold up reasonably well next to their newer kin.

I also finally managed to paint a champion for the squad fairly recently:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429169-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Conversion,%20Khorne,%20Warhammer%2040,000,%20World%20Eaters.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429170-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Conversion,%20Jump%20Infantry,%20Khorne,%20Raptors.JPG

As you can see, this guy was built with the tried and true tactics of 5th edition firmly in mind: I gave him a power fist to add a bit of oomph to a unit of tank killers. Alas, the new focus on issuing challenges means his weapon now makes him a less than optimal choice. Fortunately, I also have another champion wielding a pair of Lightning Claws — although that one yet has to be painted…

Alright, time for some heavy hitters:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/24/405071-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Dreadnought,%20Khorne,%20Khoron,%20Marax,%20Warhammer%2040,000.JPG

These are the 4th assault company’s Dreadn…uhh Helbrutes: On the left, we have Khoron the Undying, Keeper of Trophies. This ancient warrior serves as an Ancient of Rites to the company, and is a shining example to his brethren that even the fate of being entombed within a Dreadnought’s sarcophagus does not necessarily rob a man of his mental faculties nor his honour. The guy on the right is quite the opposite: Marax the Fallen was sentenced to an eternity of war for betraying Lorimar, Captain of the 4th assault company: His mind is gone, and nothing but an amalgamation of fury, pain and hatred remains, serving as a chilling reminder to the legionaries of the 4th what awaits them, should they give in to madness…

Khoron was converted from a loyal Venerable Dreadnought kit, while Marax was originally a Furioso. Funny story, GuitaRasmus and I built pretty similar looking Dreads at the same time without noticing (although his is obviously light years cooler…).

I built these two for maximum flexibility, using nearly all the weapon options from the Venerable Dread kit and adding a few of my own. Take a look:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/11/388115-Buzzsaw,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Circular%20Saw,%20Conversion,%20Dreadnought.JPG

This is Khoron with all the different equipment options. From left to right: Plasma cannon, twin linked Las, CCW, Reaper Autocannon and a heavy Bolter. The other heavy Bolter worn by the model was kindly sponsored by my fellow World Eater Biohazard.

Of course, the weapons can be exchanged between both Helbrutes. Take a look at these additional pictures:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/5/22/369045-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Conversion,%20Dreadnought,%20Khorne,%20Warhammer%2040,000.jpg

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/5/11/365225-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Conversion,%20Dreadnought,%20Khorne,%20Warhammer%2040,000.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/11/388112-Buzzsaw,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Circular%20Saw,%20Conversion,%20Dreadnought.JPG

Fortunately enough, these guys still hold up, even when compared to the new Helbrute model, in my opinion. Granted, the latter is awesome and sports a very organic look, but I think Helbrutes with a more Dreadnought-like look still work as well. The loyal Dread kits are also a joy to work with, and very easy to convert to chaos. I cannot recommend them enough!

Oh, and here’s an even bigger monster for you:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/24/405069-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Khorne,%20Warhammer%2040,000,%20World%20Eaters.jpg

This is my Defiler, the Daemon Engine “Unending Bloodlust”. I wanted the Defiler to look less like the lovechild of a crab and a gorilla and more like one of the FW Daemon engines. Fortunately, I found Amaximus’ fantastic Defiler conversion and adapted it for my own use.

I have to be honest with you: I was quite afraid of tackling this conversion, and I am so glad it turned out the way I had planned!

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/24/405070-Bardolf,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Lord,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Charun,%20Isgarad,%20Khorne.jpg

And what would a Chaos army be without some suitably menacing models to lead it? My World Eaters are no exception! Take a look:

These guys are three of my Chaos Lords. The 4th assault company’s commanding officers are called “Huntmasters”, seasoned hunters that will not rest until they have run down their prey or perished in the attempt. From left to right, you see Huntmaster Bardolf, Lord of the Huntsmen (commander of my footslogging troops), Huntmaster Isgarad and Huntmaster Charun, Lord of the Harriers (commander of the jump infantry).

Bardolf was converted by combining parts from the CSM and berzerker kits with the lower body, cloak and weapons of a WFB Warrior of Chaos. I really like his menacing, slowly advancing stance. It really says: “You’re sooo gonna get it, once I reach your lines!”, doesn’t it?

Isgarad was mainly built from the Chaos Lord in Terminator armour, with a couple of additional bitz. I wanted to build a hulking lord, seemingly locked in a duel to the death. This guy was also partly inspired by Wayde Pryce’s fantastic Lucid Furien Kain, btw.

And finally, Huntmaster Charun. The model was basically an attempt at building an “evil version” of Winterdyne’s fantastic Chapter Master. I used parts from the berzerkers, various WFB chaos kits and a MaxMini jump pack.

I also managed to complete a fourth lord fairly recently:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/24/424358-Axe%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Lord%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Huntmaster%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

This is Huntmaster Torus, Taker of Skulls, and Headsman of the 4th assault company. Like Huntmaster Isgarad, he uses the Chaos Termie Lord as a base, yet where Isgarad looks dynamic and angry, I wanted Torus to be static and quietly menacing. The axe came from the WFB Minotaurs, by the way.

So before I wind up this post, let me show you a couple of things that didn't fit in anywhere else:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/20/379376-Brazen%20Knight,%20Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Conversion,%20Juggernaut,%20Khorne.JPG

This guy is a test model for a small squad of Brazen Knights. Even though there are no official rules, they could be played as various “Counts as”-options: Bikes or allied Bloodcrushers, for example.

The pose on this guy was lifted wholesale from a model on Sprugly’s fantastic Khornate thread over at Warseer.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/29/406706-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt%2C%20Paintjob.JPG

On the left is a test model for my Chosen, the “Sons of Cron”. Until the rest of the squad is finished, I use this guy as a regular skull champion. In the middle is a World Eater channeling the legion’s gladiatorial traditions. He’s a fairly easy kitbash , using parts from the CSM, WFB Chaos Marauders and a couple of additional bitz. On the right is an old plastic berserker from the early 90s (once again sponsored by Biohazard) that I painted for nostalgia’s sake.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/31/407443-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines,%20Conversion,%20Khorne,%20Markers,%20Objective%20Marker.JPG

I also made a set of custom objective markers. These are some of them, mostly made from leftover bitz. I have started to build a new one for each army I defeat: quite a nice narrative touch, and a great way to honour/ridicule your opponent…

And finally, some more group shots of all the painted models together:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/8/29/406711-Army%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.jpg

LOVE the spawn. I had planned something similar for Dark Eldar Grotesques, but then 6th ed. came and killed Wych Cults ;) Wargheists and Minotaurs, if I'm not mistaken?

Always nice to see a solid army all lined up, great work.

Thanks a lot for the many positive replies, people. I feel flattered :)

Since the test model for the Forsaken drew so many positive comments, let me just give you a small sneak preview of the rest of the unit:

Sorry for the unpainted pics! The next update will definitely be in full colour again :cuss Oh, and those were indeed converted by adding Minotaur arms to Vargheist bodies.

C&C always welcome!

Again, thanks for the positive feedback! I really appreciate it! :D

Right, I also promised some Traitor Guard in this thread's subject, so let's have a look at the second ongoing chaos project I am working on: "Urash's Marauders".

I do realise that most of these guys are not actually power armoured, of course. But since they were built to be used alongside my World Eaters, first and foremost, and since non-power armoured troops have become a regular part of Codex: Chaos Space Marines, I hope it's still okay to post them here -- I can assure you that the traitors will not become more important than my World Eaters, so expect some "properly" armoured models in the future :(

Anyway, I started working on these guys back in 2011 just for the heck of it. Back then, allies were not yet (or rather: no longer) a part of 40k, so there was no immediate reason to build these models in the first place, apart from the fact that I had seen some fantastic Traitor Guard forces online (Dave Taylor’s amazing Blood Pact, Ten Inch Template’s Traitors, Stempe’s Vraksian Renegade Militia and some of PDH’s chaotic creations, among others), have always been a big fan of the old “Lost and the Damned” army list from Codex: Eye of Terror, and simply wanted to build some traitors. So one day, I got myself one box of Cadians and WFB Chaos Marauders respectively and got to work.

Since then, the force has grown a bit, as you can see above. And the advent (or rather: reintroduction) of allies to the 40k rules means that these guys can now be used to bolster the ranks of my World Eaters if necessary. Yay!

In any case, my traitors were built with maximum flexibility in mind from the get go. But I am getting ahead of myself! Let me just walk you through the different squads and unit types, with a couple of (hopefully) pretty pictures:

So let’s start off with a little family portrait. That’s my detachment of Traitor Guard so far:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/31/426664-Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Lntd,%20Lost%20And%20The%20Damned,%20Marauders,%20Paintjob,%20Renegades.JPG

Not bad for something that I only started to keep me amused from a conversion standpoint, don’t you think? Incidentally, the history of my Traitor Guard is full of strange coincidences: Back when I started them, there was basically no way to legally use them: The “Lost and the Damned” army list from Codex: Eye of Terror was, by that point, terribly outdated, and the 5th edition rules did not allow for allies. Granted, I could simply have used them as straight up Imperial Guard, but I didn’t want these guys to turn into a full scale second army, but rather into a force that could complement my World Eaters or be used in far smaller games. Still, I kept plugging away at them, and the army grew…

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/1/372625-Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Marauders,%20Platoon%20Command%20Squad,%20Renegade%20Militia,%20Renegades.JPG

Everything started with this company/platoon command squad I built: One traitor for each of the combat roles. From left to right: Medic, standard bearer, commander, veteran with Plasmagun and veteran with Voxcaster. I also added a Rogue Psyker.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/22/380102-Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Marauders,%20Renegade%20Militia,%20Renegades,%20Traiitors,%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

Next came my regular traitors, kitbashed from Cadians and WFB Chaos Marauders. Another squad of these has already been built, but I yet have to paint them.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/9/19/413078-Berserkers,%20Big%20Mutant,%20Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Lntd,%20Ogryns,%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

Then, of course, my Traitor Ogryns: These guys were enormous fun to build and paint, and I think I managed to come up with quite a characterful unit there. Depending on the army list used, these could be played as regular Ogryns, Ogryn berserkers (from the Vrakisan Renegade Militia list), Big Mutants (from the old LNTD list) or possibly even as Chaos Spawn (when used in a CSM army).

I also built some characters for the army of course:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/1/372628_sm-Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Marauders,%20Platoon%20Command%20Squad,%20Renegade%20Militia,%20Renegades.JPG

First up, Lord Urash, commander of the Marauders for now — until I come up with an even better model or he is usurped by one of his followers…

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/27/394852_sm-Champion%20Of%20Chaos,%20Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Nurgle,%20Paintjob,%20Renegade%20Militia.JPG

Then a champion with an obvious Nurglite bent, to be joined by a fittingly pestilent squad of traitors, one of these days…

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/27/394856_sm-Champion%20Of%20Chaos,%20Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Khorne,%20Paintjob,%20Renegade%20Militia.JPG

A champion of Khorne, who makes a great traitor commander even now, but could end up leading a squad of beastmen or something similarily brutal at some point.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/19/422853_sm-Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Lntd,%20Lost%20And%20The%20Damned,%20Marauders,%20Paintjob,%20Primaris%20Psyker.JPG

As you’ll recall, I also built a rogue Primaris Psyker, to add a little magical Oomph to the army. He could also do double duty as a champion of Tzeentch, to balance out the other two guys…

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/9/17/412444_sm-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Cultists,%20Dark%20Vengeance,%20Lord%20Commissar,%20Renegades,%20Starter%20Box.JPG

And finally, a renegade Lord Commissar, converted from a Dark Vengeance cultist leader — the opportunity was simply too good to pass up!

This army also marked my first foray into the wonderful (?) world of tanks: I built and painted a Basilisk that had been captured by the traitors:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/10/419870_sm-Basilisk,%20Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Marauders,%20Renegade%20Militia,%20Tank,%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

Quite a challenge for me, although I am pretty happy with the result!

And so, that’s the current state of the army. All of the above assembled for a family portrait looks like this:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/31/426663-Chaos,%20Conversion,%20Lntd,%20Lost%20And%20The%20Damned,%20Marauders,%20Paintjob,%20Renegades.JPG

Again, I am quite awestruck at the amount of models I managed to convert and paint, seeing how this was basically intended as a “just for fun” project! I also think the different parts of the army work together rather nicely, from a visual standpoint. The army is still pretty small, though: All that you can see above will add up to about 750 points tops. It’s also quite possibly a case of style over substance: I only included what I liked, so I have no idea how these guys would perform on the table.

But that’s beside the point: My Traitor Guard will probably mostly come in handy to bolster the ranks of my World Eaters and to add a little extra flavour in bigger games. And since several of the units could also conceivably be used as selections from Codex: Chaos Space Marines (traitors as cultists and Ogryns as Chaos Spawn, for example), it doesn’t matter that the army is as small as it is. After all, it’ll never become a classic IG gunline army, I can promise you that much…

You might have noticed that the Lord Commissar is conspicuously absent from the picture above: That’s because he has been busy assembling a little retinue of his own:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/12/420623-Chaos,%20Chaos%20Cultists,%20Dark%20Vengeance,%20Starter%20Box,%20Traitor%20Guard,%20Traitors.JPG

Of course the release of the new cultist models was really a godsend for my Traitor Guard: I chose to paint them all in matching colours. So even though they are looking like a rather ragtag bunch, they still read as a unified force and tie together with the rest of my Traitor Guard pretty well, as you can see.

So all in all, I feel that the time and money have been well spent on this little endeavour: I ended up with a force that was a blast to build and paint, plus I can use them in multiple ways, either as a part of my main 40k army, or on their own in smaller games. Some of the models could also make pretty convincing cameos in games of INQ28 or Necromunda (The Primaris Psyker and chaos cultists come to mind…).

If you want to know more about how this army was assembled, the different posts on Urash’s Marauders can be found here. I’d also love to hear your opinion on the army so far, so drop me comment!

Thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Mere words cannot express the power of the awesome.

Either the Forsaken or, oddly enough for a PA board, the traitor guard/cultists are my favourites. The Forsaken because it's one of the things that makes you kick yourself with:

"Why the HELL didn't I think of that?

And the Guard because they are so plain characterful.

Alright, people, it's been quite some time since I last updated this thread: Though I built what feels like a metric ton of new models for my World Eaters, very little of that stuff has yet made it to the painting table. I do however have a rather small update today. Rest assured that it will serve as the prelude to something rather more substantial thumbsup.gif

Anyway, you have probably already seen my Chaos Dreadnought/Helbrute with his several different equipment options:

Until now, the last two options missing from the roster were the Multimelta and rocket launcher. So I sat down to kitbash a Multimelta, using a leftover Dreadnought arm and a plastic Multimelta from an Adeptus Sororitas kit:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/10/462278-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Dreadnought%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

Since I had no more panels left from the Venerable Dread kit to cover up the loyalist decorations, I cut a Khorne standard to size. The Multimelta may be a bit on the short side, but I still think it works. That leaves only the rocket launcher, and I already have an idea for that...

Thanks for looking and stay tuned for more! thumbsup.gif

Thanks a lot, BrotherCaptainArkhan!

Right, I believe I promised you all a more substantial update regarding my World Eaters, and you shall have it:

When the various new daemon engines came out, I decided that I wanted to add a flyer to my army. Yet the regular Heldrake didn't really appeal to me all that much: While I love the idea of a chaos flyer slowly mutating and changing to a quasi-living being, with its erstwhile pilot having atrophied to a husk serving as the beast’s black heart, and while the latest FAQ pretty much transformed the Heldrake from a very viable option into an “auto-include”, I am simply not that sold on the whole "mechanical dragon" thing. So what was I to do?

As luck would have it, I had won a Painting/Converting Contest over at Throne of Skulls some time ago, and so I was allowed to choose the motto for the next contest — what better occasion than this to force myself to actually convert and paint a chaos flyer of my own? So I decreed that the contest would deal with Khornate Daemon Engines, in order to both let myself be inspired by other peoples’ awesome creations and to put myself under a bit of pressure regarding my own entry.

The first step was choose a general approach to the matter. I did pick up the Heldrake kit, because I felt it was at least a good starting point, and did a little research to find out what other people had done with the kit. After some time spent looking at a number of very cool chaos flyers, I knew what to do:

My inspiration for this conversion came from Marshalfaust’s thread on Warseer. Honourable mentions must also go to Morf’s exquisite “Hellbat” and Old School Terminator’s scratchbuilt Nurglite Heldrake (or his “Hellworm”: that …thing is truly something else) — those would be my conversions of choice if I wanted to build Night Lords or Death Guard flyers, respectively.

With my World Eaters in mind, though, the conversion ended up very close to Marshalfaust’s, in order to make the Heldrake look less like a dragon and more like a sinuous, strangely organic jetfighter. Take a look:

As you can see, only the longest set of front wings was used. I attached it directly to the main body, leading to a look slightly reminiscent of the different FW chaos flyers. One smaller set of wings was added in the regular position. While I wanted to add yet another set of wings towards the back in order to give further definition to the model’s shape, that would obviously have to wait until everything was painted (looking back now, that turned out to be a very smart decision…).

The neck was also left out, and the head replaced with an optional leftover head from the Forgefiend kit.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/13/463393_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Fighter%20Jet%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake%2C%20Hellrazor.JPG

Due to a spontaneous moment of inspiration, I forced the remains of a WFB Necrosphinx skull head into the mouth cavity. Bydoing this, I wanted to give the model an actual “face” as a focal point. I also liked the notion that the skull’s mouth would be the place where the flames from the baleflamer emerged…

I also used some lasher tendrils from the Maulerfiend kit to “plug” some of the jet nozzles on the model’s back and make the body look even more disturbing:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/13/463395_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Fighter%20Jet%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake%2C%20Hellrazor.JPG

With the lost arms and claws on my Heldrake, I also like to think that these tentacles are used as a CC weapon of sorts, slashing and whipping at other flyers and enemies on the ground.

All in all, I was reasonably pleased with the basic build of my Heldrake, which I decided to name the “Hellrazor” for a double pun – a cookie goes to you if you can figure it out msn-wink.gif

The next step was to start painting this thing, and I will not lie to you: It was a nightmare!

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/13/463396_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Fighter%20Jet%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake%2C%20Hellrazor.jpg

All those small panels on the wings took ages to paint. And there were so many of them, even though I hadn’t used all the wings that came with the kit in the first place!

Nevertheless, I persevered and used the same base colours appearing throughout all of my army: The red areas were painted using GW Mechrite Red, the Bronze trim was picked out in Vallejo Tinny Tin, and the silver areas were done with GW Boltgun Metal. I decided to paint the slightly fleshy, mutated bits of the model in a dark brown-red instead of a paler skin tone. That way, I would get a pretty organic transition to the reds on the model and would be able to avoid any expansive, pink areas.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/13/463397_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Fighter%20Jet%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake%2C%20Hellrazor.jpg

I’ll be honest with you: Getting all the base colours done on the model was quite a chore, and not an experience I would want to repeat anytime soon. Oh, I worked in multiple sub-assemblies, by the way, with the head and armour plates on the model’s back being painted separately to make sure every detail was easy enough to reach. It also quickly became clear that the changes I had done to the wings and rear of the model didn’t exactly make the job any easier…

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/13/463398_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Fighter%20Jet%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake%2C%20Hellrazor.jpg

With all the base colours in place, the next step was to apply the washes: Most of the model was generously washed with GW Agrax Earthshade to add some shadows to the red and bronze parts. The silver areas received the same treatment, only with GW Nuln Oil. After everything was well and dry, I drybrushed the Bronze with GW Dwarf Bronze, added a thin layer of GW Blood Red for the red parts and finally did some accents on the silver areas with GW Mithril Silver.

I also wanted to add an additional spot colour to show the power burning through the daemon engines innards. For that, I chose a simple OSL effect in light blue that was added to the head, mouth, engine and the underbelly of the model:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/15/463968_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Engine%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake.jpg

Another thing I wanted to do was to give the model a suitably detailed base. I knew I wanted some kind of ruined building, but all I had was a leftover Necromunda bulkhead. So I cut that apart, constructing a small ruin and added a couple of bitz as well as some of my trademark cork. Here’s what the painted base looks like:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/15/463957_sm-Base%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Engine%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake.JPG

As you can see, while I painted the ruined structure to look like rusty metal, the base itself was painted to fit in with the rest of my World Eaters. I also added numerous small details like the half-buried, dead (or is that dying?) Space Marine, two soldier’s graves and the unfortunate gravedigger himself — obviously, when they finally got him, there was nobody left to do the honours…

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/15/463958_sm-Base%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Engine%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake.JPG

An opening was cut into the cork to leave a space for the flight stand to be inserted.

With both the model and base painted, I did a couple of final adjustments: The final set of wings could finally be added, changing the model’s silhouette quite a bit. But see for yourself. I give you: The Hellrazor.

As you can see, the OSL added to the model’s “mouth” makes it look like the baleflamer is just heating up:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/15/463965_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Engine%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake.JPG

And as a huge videogame nerd, I cannot help but feel immensely pleased by the fact that the Hellrazor’s shape recalls nothing so much as an endboss from a mid-90s 16bit shoot ‘em up like R-Type or Thunder Force:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/15/463967_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Engine%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake.jpg

All in all, I am prepared to call this project a success: Granted, this beast was a chore to paint, but I think that I’ve managed to convert a flyer that looks decidedly different from the original Heldrake will still maintaining a visual balance between jetfighter and strangely organic daemon engine. And the model also looks pretty similar in silhouette to the Forgeworld flyers — hence the name “Hellrazor”, to show a certain kinship to the Hell Blade and Hell Talon, in case you’re still wondering (there’s also another, even more obvious pun hidden in there, but I’m confident you’ll figure it out on your own msn-wink.gif ).

So the model was finished — all’s well that ends well, right? But wait, there was still the ToS contest to consider! Since I wanted to submit my flyer for the contest, I still needed to write a short piece of fluff to go with the model. Being a bit of an overachiever in this respect, I actually wrote two:

The cavernous hall was illuminated by the flickering half light of the grand furnace. Lorimar’s eyes needed a moment to adjust. Then he could see Deracin standing in front of the huge daemon engine, gazing up at its form. Lorimar approached the Keeper of the Forge. “I salute you, hunter. You requested my presence?” Deracin turned to face him and inclined his head. “Yes, lord.” But he did not say anything more.

“Is this about the daemon engine, then?” Lorimar growled. Deracin nodded ponderously. “Aye. As you can see, the vessel itself has been completed.” He gestured towards the shape of the war machine. Lorimar could see the pointed wings and jagged armour plates, he could see where fleshmetal had grown to fuse with the machine’s structure. Suspended above them was the daemon engine’s head, a grinning brass skull. The rest remained half hidden by the shadows, although Lorimar got a sense of the strangely organic shape of the thing. “And the incantations?” he growled.

Deracin kept his gaze locked on the machine, only the mostly bionic side of his face visible to Lorimar. “The bindings are in place. We have also completed the rituals. Yet something is amiss. I can feel it.”

Lorimar turned to face Deracin: “And what of …the pilot?”
Deracin seemed to grow uneasy. “My lord, it would be best not to refer to him as that any longer. We cannot be sure of what remains after the rituals. And truth be told, there was not much left even before that…” His voice trailed off.

“No, Deracin. He was our brother, an honoured member of the company. I refuse to refer to him as anything but.” Lorimar could feel the Keeper of the Forge’s gaze on him: “Even so, my lord, the binding seems incomplete. There is naught we can do.”

“Let me handle this, then!” Lorimar turned to face the huge brazen skull, seemingly suspended in nothingness. Then he addressed it:

“Old friend, forgive me for disturbing your slumber. But the company has need of you. There is still prey to run down. Your hunt is not yet over.”

They could both feel it. A strange feeling of otherness. And then a sound, low and guttural at first, but still unmistakeable: the sound of a huge animal drawing breath.

Whatever the daemon engine suspended in darkness above them may have housed. It lived.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the pounding of heavy artillery vibrating through his body, Lord Commissar Sondheim of the 45th Palthian Grenadiers urged his troops forward: „Advance, men of Palthia!”, he boomed. “Advance and deliver the Emperor’s Wrath to the enemy, lest it fall upon you instead!”
Sondheim used his field glasses to look towards the front lines, where the chaos forces were advancing towards the Imperial position. He could make out the red armoured shapes of their enemies, and he couldn’t suppress a sinking feeling. The traitor legionaries of the World Eaters were deadly in combat, and to let them reach their lines would mean disaster. However, the Guard’s superior firepower had so far proven successful in stalling the enemies’ advance, pinning the abhorrent traitor Astartes and preventing them from rushing the Imperial positions.

Sondheim turned to his aide-de-camp, Junior Commissar Kelso: “Armin, send word to the Lord General that we have matters under control here. As long as our ammunitions supply lasts, we should be able to hold them back indefinitely. The Emperor’s justice will be meted out to these vile abominations.” Telzo nodded and opened his mouth to reply, when both men suddenly heard something above the din of battle: A rolling thunder that was steadily growing louder and louder. “Air support. They have air support!”, Kelso said, his eyes frantically searching the horizon. “Don’t worry, lad!” Sondheim answered. “Just one of those light jetfighters. Our anti-aircraft guns will swat it down like a bothersome fly.” He took a look through his field glasses, and sure enough, there was the shape of a chaos flyer approaching, its shape like a jagged blade. There was something slightly warped about its silhouette, though. Sondheim grinned to himself: It was no use trying to keep track of all the different kinds of corruption that chaos wrought upon both its followers and their wargear. But Throne, that thing was fast! Sondheim could hardly keep it in focus. And the closer it came, the more he felt a certain apprehension. He could see the thing now, shaped like a two-pronged dagger, yet strangely sinuous and organic at the same time, weaving between the bursts of AA-fire that were supposed to take it out. The noise was also getting louder: a strange animal roar, and above it, something else, like the sound of a thousand voices screaming in unison. “What in the name of Terra…?”, he murmured. “My lord,” Kelso’s voice sounded worried, “shouldn’t we abandon this position? It’s coming straight at us!” Sondheim heard his words, but he found himself strangely transfixed, staring at the approaching horror, listening to the rumble of its engines. He could make out details now: The wickedly sharp wings, something that looked like a head, wrought in the shape of a stylised skull, its mouth seemingly weeping blue flame. “Retreat!” he heard Kelso scream above the horrible noise, “Abandon this position!” And it was at this exact moment that Lord Commissar Sondheim knew fear.
And then his world turned into fire.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/2/15/463959_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Daemon%20Engine%2C%20Flyer%2C%20Heldrake.JPG

And with that, my Hellrazor was completed. The contest had actually worked as an incentive of finishing my very first flyer!

So thanks for looking and stay tuned for more! C&C always welcome!
