Khorne's Eternal Hunt: World Eaters and some Traitor Guard

My opinion: your opponent shouldn't even need to be understanding, that model is awesome and should be able to represent almost anything of approximate size. It is freakin' cool and most of us would be so lucky as to play an opponent that creative and with an army as well painted. If they are unreasonable about it, maybe Khorne might just hit them with something!

KrautScientist, you did an amazing job with this one and the head doesn't detract from anything about this model! Sometimes it is nice to see a slightly different aesthetic in projects.

Wow, some layers of paint really made the head grow on me! It's refreshing to see something other than defiler masks for a change

. I should never have doubted you, the thing came out a beast! Great work as always, looking forwards for more!

Bryan Blair: i couldn't agree with you more :) stuff like this is exactly one of the reasons why i do this hobby!

keep up the awesome work, the wargrinder looks even better nows it based, literally grinding its foes into the dirt :)

  • 3 months later...

Wow, loved your earlier stuff, and seeing this just makes me want to go and buy a DK to convert into my own twisted creation!

Maybe you could use it as a contemptor, though larger base is an issue.

Lovely model, and the base adds so much too.

Late to the party, I have staggered in from the cold and read your entire thread.

First a round of applause for the first dreadknight I've liked and the best mechanicus model I've ever seen! *standing ovation*.

I love everything about your gladiator style, and have been thinking about similar aesthetics myself, though with chains and snow bases.

Great mix of WHFB and old school gothic to make a darker 40k then most.

Many ideas here to influence, great work.

Thanks for the kind words, guys! And time this thread finally received an update, although in this case, I am in the priviledged position of letting other hobbyists do my work for me.

So, in time for Christmas, let me show you glimpses at two highly inpirational hobby projects that double as crowning hobby moments of awesome for me – but we’ll get to that in a minute…

1. Mini Me

Most of you will already have seen Brother Heinrich’s amazing Night Lords thread over in the Works in Progress section, and I already mentioned that Heinrich was awesome enough to immortalise various hobbyists as models in his army. Anyway, Brother Heinrich recently posted the results of his work, and I am really happy that a miniature version of myself will be serving in the Night Lords’ 15th company under the nom de guerre of Brother Berias. Check this out:

http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q532/mv8830/Night%20Lords%20II/34e282a9-475b-4e03-82d5-81aef730cf2c_zps7d129276.jpg

I am the guy on the right, rocking that awesome custom Reaper Autocannon. On the left you can see the Night Lords avatar of fellow hobbyist Dragonkin Arenis, now my partner in bloodshed for the millennia to come.

Together with three other weapon teams, these guys will be used as counts-as Obliterators in Heinrich’s army — a perfect way of representing that particular choice, if you ask me!

And while the models are amazing enough on their own, 1000Heathens also did a killer job on the accompanying piece of background he wrote. So be sure to check it out, along with the rest of this stunning force, over at Heinrich’s B&C thread . And, of course, a huge thank you for Brother Heinrich for this fantastic opportunity!

2. Images from a past life

Now this second thing is just as awesome, and for slightly similar reasons. Fellow German hobbyist AgnostosTheos has been building and painting one of the most impressive Pre-Heresy World Eaters armies on the net. And while I myself have no ambition to start a pre-heresy Astartes army (or rather, yet another one next to my kitbashed Custodes), I couldn’t help but wonder what “30k” versions of the characters making up Khorne’s Eternal Hunt would look like. So I approached AgnostosTheos and asked him whether he was game for a small experiment: Would he be interested in building some 30k versions of my characters for his army? Being an all around nice guy, he agreed.

And now imagine my happiness when he just posted the first two characters just the other day. So let me show you both of these characters, with their background as well as their 30k and 40k versions, respectively. Here we go:

Brother Marax the Fallen

When Lorimar ascended to the rank of captain of the 4th assault company, brother Marax stood at his side. Likewise, during the years of the Great Crusade, he proved to be a loyal retainer, time and time again.

But after Marax had undergone the psychosurgical treatments introduced to the legion by its primarch Angron, he began to change. The occasions when Marax would succumb to frenzy and insatiable bloodlust on the field of battle grew ever more frequent. But the negative effects of this development were ignored, for Marax had become an insurmountable warrior. While the World Eaters grew more and more fervent in their worship of Khorne, Marax was one of those who welcomed the bloody rituals. During all this time, Lorimar kept his brother under close scrutiny, for he feared what Marax might become. Though he was a force of nature on the battlefield, his frenzy made him more and more difficult to control.

The Skalathrax campaign, during which the legion tore itself apart in a single night, marked the decisive point in the tale of Marax.  After Khârn the Betrayer had begun the senseless slaughter, Lorimar had to use all of his authority to keep at least his company together as an organised force. But amidst the chaos of blood and flame, he was opposed by Marax. The once loyal battle brother considered Lorimar’s refusal of bloody slaughter to be treason and threw himself at his captain, filled with daemonic rage.

While the World Eaters were tearing each other apart, Lorimar and Marax were locked in a fight for life and death of their own.
Marax was an unfathomably powerful warrior, and his anger transformed him into a whirlwind of destruction, but in the end, it was his rage that spelt his doom: He fell for a feint and was almost cut in two by Lorimar’s axe. The battle was decided.

Even with death drawing near, Marax still tried to reach his foe. When he breathed his last, Lorimar, towering over his shattered body, promised him this: He would receive a grave that was worthy of a true warrior. And he would be feared for eternity.

Apothecary Dumah had to employ every mystery of his art to trap the last spark of life within the shattered form of Marax. But he was successful: Marax was interred into the sarcophagus of a dreadnought and thus sentenced to an eternity of war – truly a worthy grave for a warrior.

Being trapped inside the dreadnought for millennia has irrevocably shattered Marax’s mind, and all that might have been left of the once proud warrior has been drowned in a sea of bloodlust and insanity. When the 4th assault company is not at war, his eternal grave is secured within a stasis field, which is only deactivated once the battle begins. On the battlefield, he rushes forward like a wild beast, tearing apart enemies and war machines alike with crackling lightning claws, howling with rage and hatred. And it is not easy to decide who fears Marax more: Those who have to face him in battle or the warriors of the 4th assault company themselves, to whom he has become an undying reminder of what will befall them, should they give in to the curse of blood frenzy.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567379_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Kitbash.jpg

So, meet the 30k version of Brother Marax: By the look of the model, Marax is already well on his way to becoming and unstoppable madman by this point. And isn’t it heartening to see how he has stuck with his trademark weapons for over 10,000 years? Awww….

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567383_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.jpg

And here’s the second character in his “youth”. Take a look:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567380_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.jpg

Brother Khoron the Undying, Keeper of Trophies

In a way, Khoron the Undying was old already when the World Eaters legion was still young. Having been a warrior from a very early age, he was already a battle-hardened veteran, forged in the fires of the Unification Wars, when Lorimar ascended to command of the 4th assault company. Brother Khoron had seen battle and he had the scars to prove it. He served unter Lorimar’s command, but he was a trusted friend of the young Captain, full of experience and wisdom and gifted with a deep understanding of what it was that bound the legionaries together as brothers. He stood with Lorimar during his search for an identity for the legion. And he stood with him when the Captain decided to follow his Primarch to Terra to depose the false Emperor. For many years, he was a tower of strength for the company and came to be respectfully called “older brother” by the legionaries.

Shortly after the Skalathrax campaign had sundered the legion, Khoron was mortally wounded during a hunt. The man who had survived a thousand battles was powerless in the end, as the alien powers of a Xenos weapon tore his body apart. With his dying breath, he implored Lorimar to let him continue fighting, accepting the dangers of being entombed within the sarcophagus of a Dreadnought. Lorimar was hesitant, for he had witnessed the effects of such incarceration on the Fallen, but in the end he granted his old friend’s wish.

And thus the “older brother” became the being known as the Undying. For the last millennia, his colossal frame has continued to be a sight of inspiration to his brothers. Where Marax the Fallen is a warning of the damnation awaiting the company, the Undying symbolises a way of keeping this grisly fate at bay. It is only at the most chaotic moments of battle that he will succumb to rage and frenzy, and each time this happens, his brothers hope that he will come to eventually. And they fear the day when their older brother’s mind will finally cave in on itself.

When not in battle, Khoron the Undying serves as a master of rites to the company, residing in the Hall of Hunters aboard the company’s capital ship, Aeternus Venator. There he guards the trophies and weapons assembled by the Warriors of Khorne’s Eternal Hunt and presides over the ceremonies held by the legionaries since the times of the Great Crusade.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/11/388112_sm-Buzzsaw%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Circular%20Saw%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Dreadnought.JPG

I love how the face used by AgnostosTheos captures Khoron as an older, more grizzled veteran, even during the days of the Heresy. And the skull on his chestplate could even be seen as a shoutout to his later countenance…

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/12/23/567381_sm-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.jpg

Anyway, this is clearly a fantastic chance of getting a glimpse at the past lives of the legionaries in the 4th assault company. And AgnostosTheos‘ paintjobs and conversions are more than worthy representations for the characters — in fact, his versions are more than giving me a run for my money ;-)

Will we see more glimpses at this unremembered empire, I wonder? What would Lord Captain Lorimar have looked like at that time? Hmm…

In any case, many thanks to AgnostosTheos for this lovely and unexpected Christmas present! Be sure to check out his WIP thread as well as his awesome Flickr gallery!

So yeah, two awesome examples of me somehow managing to wiggle my way into other people’s hobby endeavours ;)

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

I've just looked through this thread for at least the second if not the third time, you work truly is inspirational, I just feat that I'd like to use a lot of your ideas and would hate to steal/ copy your brilliance

Hey everyone,

whew, it's been a while since I last updated this thread. Fortunately, I have slowly managed to rediscover parts of my lost painting modjo over the last days and weeks, and so I can finally share something new with you:

I am currently working on some Plague Marines, for no other reason than the fact that painting Nurgle models is always a ton of fun ;) Those of you also following the WIP section of the board may already have seen these models take shape, but here they are completely finished:

My first test model, based on an old, 2nd edition plastic Plague Marine:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/1/31/580047-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Nurgle%2C%20Plague%20Marines.jpg

The second model I painted, kitbashed from some leftover CSM and loyalist parts:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/5/581805-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Nurgle%2C%20Plague%20Marines.jpg

And finally, the most recent addition: A mutated plasma gunner I built in late 2010 -- now finally painted and based. Yay!

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/9/582905-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Nurgle%2C%20Plague%20Marines.JPG

And here are the three guys together:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/9/582906-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Nurgle%2C%20Plague%20Marines.JPG

So far, painting these guys has been an absolute blast, so I am considering adding some more models to the squad: I have two of the 90s metal Plague Marines, plus an old icon bearer from the same time. Giving those models the updated painting treatment would bring the squad up to seven -- Nurgle's sacred number, conveniently enough ;)

To tell you the truth, I am trying to squeeze in a Nurglite model every now and then, whenever my painting motivation threatens to desert me. It usually works, too, because Nurgle models always allow you to play loose with colours and effects. Here's a Terminator Lord/Sorcerer I converted and painted some time ago:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/5/581808-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Lord%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Kitbash.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/5/581809-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Lord%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Kitbash.JPG

A closeup of the scythe:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/3/15/473726-Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Counts%20As%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Manreaper%2C%20Nurgle%2C%20Paintjob.JPG

And a Plague Ogryn I converted and painted quite a while ago for my cousin's Death Guard army:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/7/4/385269-Big%20Mutant%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Lntd%2C%20Lost%20And%20The%20Damned%2C%20Nurgle%2C%20Plague%20Ogryn%2C%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

So, believe it or not, but Nurgle seems to act as some kind of "palate cleanser" for me, at least when it comes to painting (you wouldn't really want anything nurgly near your palate in a more literal sense, to be sure).

Anyway, let me know what you think! :)

Alright, here's something really world-eaterly again: A new Chaos Lord for my collection, inspired by Azog (from the Hobbit film franchise), no less ;)

Vorl Dustwalker, Lord of the Pit

Some members of the War Hounds Astartes Legion may have loathed the brutal, gladiatorial style of warfare introduced by the Primarch Angron, but Vorl Dustwalker was not one of them. Even before the legion’s reunion with its Primarch, he had already established himself as a master of the fighting style that would become a trademark of the legion in later years. On the War Hounds’ vassal world of Bodt, Vorl was one of the Astartes tasked with training the legionaries in combat at close quarters. And many mighty champions of the World Eaters still hold in their hearts a feeling of shame at being brought low by him during sparring matches, the acrid taste of Bodt’s volcanic soil still etched into their memory as a reminder of their failure.

After gladiatorial fighting had become one of the mainstays of the World Eaters’ cobbled-together warrior culture, Vorl became known as the Dustwalker, a legend in the fighting pits, almost on par with mighty Delvarus, the legion’s uncontested champion on the Hot Dust.

How the Dustwalker came to be a member of Lorimar’s 4th assault company after the madness at Skalathrax is difficult to ascertain. But ever since, he has been serving as a combat instructor and an insurmountable contestant in the fighting pits nestled in the bowels of the company’s capital ship.

Vorl Dustwalker is not often seen outside the pits, for ordinary fights tend to be beneath his notice. Once the Dustwalker’s interest is piqued by a battle or an adversary, however, he may take to the field, accompanied by a coterie of his most talented gladiators. Their only partly armoured bodies and comparatively primitive weapons are both a mockery of their opponents and a testament to their skill, and Vorl is the first among these capricious warriors.

If you want to learn more about how this model was converted, check out my WIP thread . And, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Holy Crap!!

I just saw his triumph rope! Way to take an unquestionably great idea and push the execution all the way! Excellent work, as you have demontrated again and again. I hope that when you set The Dustwalker on the table for the first time, your opponent's shoulders drop visibly. thumbsup.gif

  • 1 month later...

Whoa, it's been a while since the last update! And those of you who also frequent this board's "Works in Progress" section will already be familiar with the models I am showing you today. Nevertheless, for the sake of completeness, here are the most recent finished additions to my various chaos projects:

First up, I painted up some of the amazing late 90s metal Plague Marines that I still had lying around, turning the Plague Marines into a small, playable squad of their own:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/12/593032-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Death%20Guard%2C%20Nurgle%2C%20Plague%20Marines%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.JPG

I am pretty happy with these guys, especially because they were mostly a just for fun side project!

As for my World Eaters, I built and painted some more gladiators to accompany Vorl Dustwalker (posted further up in this thread). Take a look:

A gladiator fighting with pike and net, inspired by the classic Roman Retiarius:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595199-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

His counterpart, the Secutor:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590809-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

A gladiator wielding a chain glaive -- let's just call him the Glaivex for now:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/5/590802-Chain%20Glaive%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne.JPG

And a Bestiarius, named for his position as a gladiatorial Beastmaster:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595188-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

The model can also be slotted into a bigger base, along with two chaos hounds I painted quite a while ago:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595191-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

All of this brings the gladiator squad up to seven members:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/19/595196-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Khorne%2C%20Khorne%27s%20Eternal%20Hunt.JPG

I am also working on even more models to add to the squad: Check out my WIP thread, in case you're interested in the latest developments!

And, finally, the release of the new Helbrute model gave me the final push of motivation I needed to paint my Dark Vengeance Helbrute at lomg last! Here he is:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/23/596385-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute%2C%20Khorne.JPG

And another picture with his new colleagues:

Those three guys are almost enough to form that most elusive and powerful of Helbrute formations: The Barbershop Helquartet of Dooooom! ;)

As always, let me know what you think! :)

I havent posted anything on this forum in a while but seeing your work has inspired me.  I was wondering if you find you have to do a lot of cutting to get the marauder bits and zerker bits to look good.  I have kit bashed two so far myself.  Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the comment! As for your question: Using a regular Marauder torso on marine legs is really simple, if you ask me: Just shave a bit of plastic off the ball joint at the top of the marine legs, and you're there. I usually add some grenades or similar gear on the hip, in order to mask the transition between both parts, but the scale works perfect as is.

Using the Marauder Horsemen bodies (as I have done on the Bestiarius, for instance) is a bit more complicated, both because you have to cutt off the horseman's legs first, and because the left arm is less versatile, due to that big armour plate on the shoulder being a part of the torso. That said, the conversion is still a matter of minutes. The horsemen parts are more slender, though, so additional bitz may be required to better blend the parts of the conversion together.

And when it comes to the regular marauder arms, these are pretty much perfectly scaled for Marines, even though they may seem slightly too brutish on the actual marauders ;) You can even use Beastman arms, although you may have to do some cutting (and shave off some of the fur) in order to make them fit.

Anyway, that's my two cents msn-wink.gif Hope this helps!

Hey everyone,

I realised today that I have been rather neglectful towards this thread, mostly focusing on my ongoing WIP topic. So let me take this opportunity to finally bring this thread up to speed as well.

The bad news is that, if you're following the WIP section of the forum, all of this will already be familiar to you. If, however, you only ever browse the Hall of Honour, you're in for one hell of an update msn-wink.gif

Anyway, here are the last additions to Khorne's Eternal Hunt:

1. Khorlen the Lost

First up, another look at my last finished Helbrute:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/4/2/599693-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute.jpg

And thanks to the input from several fellow hobbyists, I managed to come up with a piece of background for the model:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/4/2/599696-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Space%20Marines%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Dreadnought%2C%20Helbrute.jpg

Khorlen the Lost

Ever since the Skalathrax campaign, the warriors of
Khorne's Eternal Hunt have been trying to keep the inevitable descent into madness that has claimed most of their legion at bay, instead clinging to their fierce martial pride. However, Lord Captain Lorimar's retreat from Skalathrax earned him no small number of opponents amid the ranks of his own legion. One such enemy, Karakar the Exalted, considered Lorimar and his company cravens and hypocrites, unworthy of Khorne's blessings and ignorant of the true nature of chaos: Karakar was furious about the Eternal Hunt looking down on daemonhood and the gifts of the Warp, and he vowed he would educate the fourth assault company about the true meaning of chaos.

In late M39, Karakar and his warband fell upon the Fourth in a series of rapid assaults. During the initial phase of the fight, Huntmaster Khorlen, then a senior officer of the company, and his retinue were captured on the daemon world of Skabrea. Lorimar himself led an attack into the heart of the enemy stronghold, in order to rescue his battle brother and put Karakar to the sword.

When they reached the innermost sanctum of the fortress, the warriors of the fourth discovered a chilling scene: Karakar had wanted to punish the Eternal Hunt for their selfish pride, and for clinging to their long-obsolete past, so he had undertaken a sinister ritual to call the forces of the warp into the vessel provided by Huntmaster Khorlen's body. He had paid dearly, however, as Khorlen - his body twisted and wracked with the raw powers of chaos - had broken his chains and slain everyone present in the ritual chamber. There his brothers found him, crippled and bloodied, his form twisted beyond reason, but yet imbued with a sinister resilience through the powers of the warp. And against all odds, Khorlen remained completely sane, and aware of the horrible changes that had been wrought upon him.

Lorimar and his warriors were at a loss: Had Khorlen's mind been shattered by the ritual, it would have been easy enough to put him out of his misery. But their brother was still sane, and begged them to allow him to continue fighting. So a compromise was reached: Khorlen's twisted remains were interred into a dreadnought ironform, in an attempt to keep him combat worthy.

But the ritual had been so powerful that even the internment did not protect Khorlen against the forces of the warp: His ironform began to change and mutate, turning Khorlen into a hulking beast of steel and fleshmetal. Yet at the heart of the hellish contraption, the proud spirit of Huntmaster Khorlen still remained, untainted and unbroken.

Khorlen spends most of his days hidden deep within the great forge aboard the
Aeternus Venator, his condition closely monitored by Huntmaster Deracin. Only in times of battle is he released to walk among his brothers once more, seeking a worthy death in battle as long as he is still himself...

2. Raas the Butcher

Then there's this charming chap, named for fellow forumite Augustus B'Raass, whose Night Lords 47th company continues to be a source of inspiration:

Raas the Butcher

The warrior known as Raas the Butcher is one of the 4th assault company’s oldest veterans and serves in Lord Captain Lorimar’s personal guard, known as Lorimar’s Fist. Even among this band of ruthless killers, his thirst for blood excels, and his penchant for tearing his opponents limb from limb is well known and feared by those who have to stand against him: Watching Raas charging the enemy with surprising speed, a blood curdling howl on his lips, is terrifying to behold, and usually the last sight his victims are afforded before his mighty war halberd effortlessly shears through their armour and flesh. His bloodlust is so great that he spends most battles completely lost to the nails, as much of a danger to his friends as to his enemies. Chains decorate his ancient suit of modified Cataphractii armour as if to bind him, but it is clear that the Lord Captain’s abyssal growl is the only thing that will bring this wild hound to heel…

3. Lord Valkar, the Scarred One

Next up, a Khornate Chaos Lord on juggernaut (these seem to be all the rage these days msn-wink.gif ):

Huntmaster Valkar, the Scarred One, Lord of Chains and Master of the Brazen Hunters

In the latter days of the Great Crusade, Brother Valkar was fighting as a line officer in the 12th legion’s assault formations, and it was during the pacification of a cluster of feudal worlds in the eastern fringe that he incurred a wound that would change his life forever: A maddened cultist attacked him with a weapon wreathed in sorcerous flame, taking Valkar’s right eye and leaving him with a hideous, eight-pronged scar over the right side of his face. To make matters worse, the damaged eye socket wouldn’t take any augmetic replacement for some reason unfathomable even to the Legion’s Apothecaries, leaving Valkar permanently one-eyed. In any other Astartes Legion, this would surely have relegated him to the place of an Auxiliarii or a diplomat – a bleak prospect for one who had been bred for war. But Angron’s legion had little use for diplomats, and even crippled officers could hold a command as long as they knew how to hold their own in the fighting pits. So Valkar learned to balance the consequences of his disability and returned to battle, seemingly as effective as before.

However, it seemed his scars ran deeper still, as Valkar started hearing voices: Harsh whispers now spurred him onward in battle, inciting him to ever growing acts of bloodshed, bellowing excitedly at every kill, and howling in frustration at each denied killing stroke. Valkar feared he might be growing insane, but in a legion wracked with the influence of the
Butcher’s Nails, sanity was not exactly a priority.

For Valkar’s seeming descent into madness only mirrored that of his legion: The World Eaters became ever more brutal and uncontrollable, finally siding with the Warmaster Horus and becoming one of his most effective terror weapons. And Brother Valkar was always there, swept along with the tide.

The last time he heard the mysterious voices was when the drop pods of the XII legion rained down on the blasted hellscape Istvaan III had become: When the doors of his Dreadclaw hissed open and Valkar began charging at his erstwhile brothers and their fellow loyalists with a blood curdling roar on his lips, the voices broke into triumphant laughter one last time – and then fell silent. A pact had been sealed.

Over the following centuries and millennia, Valkar has become a mighty champion of Khorne. He was one of the first officers in the World Eaters’ 4th assault company to be granted a daemonic steed by the powers of the warp, and riding this beast wrought from brass and hellfire, he became nigh invincible. He has gathered similarly gifted brethren around him, forming an elite cadre of mounted legionaries called the Brazen Hunters.

And once again, there are voices: Whispers in the shadows that Valkar the Scarred One could one day challenge the Lord Captain himself for the command of the company.

4. Hadrak Firebringer

And finally, after what feels like more than a decade of deliberation, my very first finished Obliterator model. A huge thank you goes to thamier for providing some excellent custom Obliterator parts, finally enabling me to come up with a design that fits both my aesthetic whims and the look and feel of my army:

Hadrak Firebringer

He appeared in a flash of light, immense even in his crouched position. With the noise of grinding metal, he rose to his full height, the hoarfrost of void teleportation trickling off his armour.

The battlefield lay ahead of him as an endless grey expanse. One by one, his brothers appeared. He could feel their spirits through mind link, feel their hunger. The sizzle of the nails, surgically changed in nature, yet not in intensity, a constant buzz that would soon grow into an all-consuming fire.
Before him, countless red target markers flared into life and gave him purpose. The hunt began.

Advance!

His command remained unspoken, issued only via mind link, yet the hulking shapes of his brothers began to move as one. They advanced across the grey plain, slow but relentless, sending a hail of fire towards the enemy lines. He was dimly aware of figures running past them: the fleshkin. But they were unimportant, insubstantial almost. More a nuisance than anything, making the task of calculating trajectories and fire corridors more difficult than it needed to be.

A blast from his Lascannon caught an enemy tank, making the vehicle explode in an enormous fire ball. First blood to them. The nails rewarded him with a wash of adrenaline, and beyond that, he could feel the dark joy of his brothers, shared through the bond that connected them.

The enemy returned fire, but the pinpricks merely burned new scorch marks into his ancient, pitted armour. He and his brothers shared a moment of derisive amusement. Then they returned fire, and watched another score of target markers flicker out of existence. The nails drove them onwards, promising a reward that never came. But it did not matter. All that mattered was fire and heat and destruction and death.

It was over too soon. It always was.

A figure appeared before him, laughably small to his eyes. Yet he could make out the red and bronze armour. The badge of the XIIth legion. His legion. The figure addressed him, looking up at him through a snarling Sarum pattern helmet:

“I salute you hunter! You have hunted well, but your work here is done. Deactivate your weapons and await extraction.”

A targeting marker appeared over the legionary, flaring from green to red and back to green. One impulse, one tiny movement was all it would take to give the nails their due. He could feel his brothers’ anticipation and the nails knifing into the meat of his mind. Red and green. Red and green.

“I repeat. Deactivate your weapons.”

With a mind impulse, he powered down his weapons and disengaged the targeting lock. The nails pulsed hot in his mind, punishing his hesitation with a white hot lance of pain. And beyond that, he could also feel something from his brothers – disappointment? Disapproval? He focused on the fleshkin before him, seeing the legionary as if for the first time. It seemed as if the he allowed himself to relax now. Was that relief?

“Compliance”, he growled at last.

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Awesome work as always KrautScientist.

I have a love/hate relationship with this thread... "Love" because seeing these guys pop up always gives me inspiration and ideas to get started on the large pile of unpainted World Eaters I possess; and at the very same time, "hate" because seeing these guys pop up always gives me inspiration and ideas that will require many further purchases before I can start work on the large pile of unpainted World Eaters I possess.

I'll take a shufti at your WIP thread, but do you have a bitz breakdown for Raas the Butcher?  I think I see Deamon Prince Thigh pads, warp talon fists, a Dark Angel halberd with WHFB chaos knight halberd blade, but what did you use for the legs, helmet and chestplate?

Looking forward to seeing more.

Cheers

Widowmaker

Cheers, Widowmaker!

I see where you're coming from, hating to get the feeling that you need to buy more stuff because you want to recreate something you've seen online. The only way to make it feel any better is to inflict the same plight on others -- hence why I'm doing it ;)

Seriously, though: Regarding your question as to the components that make up Raas the Butcher: You have most bitz down pat: the halberd blade came from the WFB Chaos chariot, and there are a few pieces of chain from the WFB Skullcrushers, but apart from that: very well spotted! The torso and legs are one piece, because he's essentially one of these guys. I just added a different set of arms and shoulder pads, really.

Hope this helps! :)

  • 3 weeks later...

I went on your website I had a few questions about your wolves...I notice SW/chaos space marines/ also I think chaos marauders and I think WOC....I want to achieve a similar look and feel could you please share your bitz you used so I can get off on the right foot?

Thanks purely amazing work here

@ recon0321: Hmm, let's see:

- The obvious sources for my Chaos Wolves are indeed Space Wolve and Chaos Space Marine bitz, with the odd Khorne berzerker bit thrown in for variety. Some of the Raptor heads also work very well, because they have a subtly sinister look when combined with loyalist armour parts. Some of them are also obviously based on various patterns of Space Marine armour.

- I also use WFB bitz, as you correctly pointed out: mostly from the chaos warriors and chaos knights (the latter are an especially great source for conversion bitz).

- regular WFB Chaos Marauders are a great source for arms: A single, unarmoured marauder arm combined with power armour bitz makes for a great, slightly feral look that is a great fit for both World Eaters and (chaotic) Space Wolves. The shields and fur half-capes that come with the kit are also really useful!

- maybe the best conversion bitz you can get for chaotic Space Wolves are the heads from the WFB Marauder Horsemen! They are all excellent and instantly make your Wolves more sinister and threatening. Particular favourites of mine are the champion head with the horned helm, the bearded head with the eyepatch or the various helmets.

All in all, the important part is to make sure the models don't end up too chaotic or too loyalist, so the mix of parts is important here. You should also avoid mixing and matching parts too hapharzardly, because then your Wolves will only end up looking like they belong to the 13th company (unless that is what you want, of course). The perfect recipe really depends on whether you're going for loyalist Space Wolves, traitorous Space Wolves or some kind of visual middle ground (13th company). Don't be afraid to experiment!

One last tip for you: Dom Murray's Space Wolves are particularly inspirational, if you can ever get a closer look at them -- they used to appear in WD every now and then (WD 358 had a bigger feature on them, for example), so maybe browsing through some back issues might help.

Hope this helps! Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any further questions!

Another cool source of bits for more feral looking space wolves is the beastman kit as the weapons and shields look awesome

@scientist - everytime you post and its not a new mini slaanash claps
