DIY Renegade Idea

Hi guys. First off I hope it's ok to post like this in here and sorry for large amount of text I am about to bombard you with.

 

Had an idea for DIY renegade Warband and just wanted to get some opinion and input. The basic jist is a Greco-Roman themed bunch of renegades. Here's the basic idea I have so far, obviously not very developed as I only came up with it a few hours ago.

 

The Legion (stand in name until I come up with something better) have taken control of a small area of space. I'm thinking perhaps its like a small area of warp rifts like the maelstrom. There they have taken over the the local pirate gangs and directly rule several planets, and collect tithes of several more in the vicinity. The empire is always expanding and drawing more attention from the wider imperium who have been (their usual) slow to respond. The Legion take in any renegades to bolster their rank and will often use mercenary be they xenos or other renegade/tratior warbands. Have to figure out when they have got thier gene seed from to replace losses but can work that out later.

 

The Legion has turned from the light of the emperor and have given themselves to the worship of the chaos gods. Generally they worship the whole Pantheon as one deity (I was thinking of coming up with alternate but obvious names that link them to the Roman gods so the whole pantheon as a sigular would equate to Jupiter), but also worship the gods as individuals when required, such as sacrificing to Khorne(Mars/Ares - probably don't need to point that out really),and Nurgle (not sure here Hades or Thanos not sure what fits) before battle, while gods such as Slaanesh(Dionysus perhaps?) are popular amongst the petty officers and human populations (Roman orgies!). Tzeentch(not sure on Roman/Greek equivalent, Hekate was goddess of magic but doesn't really fit, maybe the titan Prometheus? Loki would be perfect but then im stretching the idea a bit) also worshiped through the myster cults led by chaos sorcerers. As well as the chaos gods, there has formed a cult around the leaders of the legions who have led them to glory and reached Daemon hood (basically the Imperial cult although maybe have to scale it back from daemon hood as that should be a rather uncommon occurrence).

 

Mutations are generally allowed, seen as the gifts of the gods, however when they start to effect marine too much they are taken by the priest hood (Dark Apostles). For those that fall under the influence of one god, such as Khorne berserkers and Slaanesh pleasure dudes, their fates usually leads them to the gladiatorial pits, however they are often employed in battle against the Legions other troops.

 

Amongst the human population the CSM are seen as demigods, like the heroes of the Romans/Greeks.

 

So that's what I have so far. Here's where I am stuck and would love some help:

Origin - my initial idea formed around a group of Astral Claws that had split from there brethren as they became the Red Corsairs. This way they could carry over the Roman Legion theme already set in the Tyrants legions. However not sure if there is enough time in the timeline for them to set up the sort of society I have described above. If I use Astral Claws they will have to of captures someone else's gene stock at some point which will need explaining.

Another idea given in the Chaos Ascendant forum (thank you Sinner Red) was a twisted Odysseus, a returning Space marine strike force getting lost on the warp and coming out as renegades. To make it more Roman it could be more of Aeneas story, the remnants of the chapter (fleet based) heading to a imperium given home world, perhaps stopping to fight in a conflict against renegades and falling from the light (I could even go as far as calling said world Carthage, and they thought against the minions of Dido :) but I won't, promise). As a full on(ish) chapter they should have their own gene stock which they add to other renegades who have joined them, plus scavenging off the dead.

Names - I feel Legion should appear somewhere. I think naming is what puts me off making DIY chapter as I find really hard.

Badge - while I like the idea of a corrupted eagle I think if it was the main badge it would be confusing. I like the tyrants legion symbol so maybe a simular clenched fist inside a chaos star.

Armor colour - I kind of fancy a metallic colour - maybe dark dirty silver and red or dark dirty gold/bronze/copper and blue.

 

So there it is. Is the idea any good, or is it a bit simular to something else. Any suggestions on improvement would be much appriciated I have never done a DIY chapter/Warband before.
