Quick question about C:SM Captain

Legal. Tactically dubious mind.

 

I was thinking:

 

Captain - Plasma Pistol, Storm Shield, Artificer Armour

Command Squad - 4x Plasma Guns

 

That way the captain can tank for the unit quite effectively :D

 

Well it's something to discuss in the Tactica section but for now I'll say no, it won't be that good when you get charged.

Definitely more of a tactica issue, but your Captain will always be happier punching/stabbing/hammering enemies than he will be shooting them. And when he's happy, you're happy.

 

And the reasons for this are "volume" and "armor saves."

 

Captains simply get more attacks in melee than they do in shooting. You can get up to 5 on the charge in melee, and 3 in shooting (Rapid Fire weapon and an Aux Launcher). There are more armor-ignoring options in melee for a Captain than there are in shooting.

Your absolute most efficient shooting loadout versus MEQ (based on shooting casualties alone) is a combi-plasma and an aux launcher. In pure kill numbers, it's only better than a Captain on the charge armed with a power sword, maul, or staff. Any other melee weapon loadout (aside from basic chainsword) beats the one-to-one damage output of shooting, PLUS has the precharge shooting of a pistol to boost MEQ kills by 14%.
