the emperor is scottish
I was wondering if all you long fangs could help me build a space wolf force. I'm not looking for a competitive list just one that suits the fluff and narrative of what I have planed. I've moved house recently and 'misplaced' a few of my codex's one of which annoyingly is my wolf dex. Even if I had my dex I'd still be asking for help. Ill be playing games if between 1500 and 2000. The units I'm looking to include is: Logan Solid unit of wolf guard Sky claw Rune priest Wolfen scouts Thunder wolf cavalry I know this is fairly vague but anything you's can suggest would be great. Another thing I'd like to know Is are wolf scouts a decent unit or are they any better than standard scouts seeing as they are full Astartes. Brom MKIV
Give us a little more info on your fluff/narrative and your gaming group. Also why no dread man? Their epic for narrative batreps! the emperor is scottish
My gaming group consists of anything between 5 and 8 people not including me. It's usually team battles played with a big verity of scenarios and win conditions. The armies Ill be coming up against are: IG Crimson fists Nids Orcs Necron Death guard Tau Dark eldar Eldar And Afew others but I'm not sure seeing as just about everyone has a secondary army. The fluff behind my wolves as heretical as it sounds is they turned traitor just before the outbreak of the Horus heresy. My so far unnamed wolf lord always violent and unpredictable earns himself the ire of the legion, the primarch himself and the imperium as a whole. Responsible for slaughters and massacres that would make the world eaters blush this grand company was always one step to close to all our heresy. The wolf lord ever believing the chains of the imperium shackled the true nature of the space wolves he encourged his men to ever greater heights of butchery, to let the chains slip and master the beat within. This led to said great company hosting a large group of wolfen. The full extent of their heresy was unvailed when it came to light that the wild priests were encouraging the wolfen mutation with the company's marines. Forced to flee the legions fury it wasn't long before they found themselves waging war against the imperium for the dark gods and for the warmaster who saw in them a weapon to be unleashed not a beast to be tamed. This is only a small amount and a rough draft at that. Ill flesh it out more when I come to starting the army. Brom MKIV
Narrative sounds cool. Its strange to use the most beloved character in the universe as a bad guy but the +1 attack thing can help explain he and his companys blood lust I guess. I may mess with a list later focusing on pre heresy vet feel heavy on wulfen but unless you include long fangs, Mech, pods or some mix of all 3 I feel you will suffer from lack of range/mobility, just something to consider. Regarding scouts they took a hit but in a list like this they could be ok, their far better than average scouts except for not being troops. JimmyGuyy
I built my last escalation list with a narrative. My take was to include squads in proportion to the campaign as well as the company's resources. Since I run Ragnar mainly I had to start with blood claws. I also chose to always have twice as many blood claws as grey hunters. I did this for 2 reasons: one was to handicap myself and encourage the new people that were playing in the escalation campaign, the second was that it jives with the fluff on ragnar's company and most other companies. The next thing I considered is the story of my campaign. We happened to be running a Planetary Empires campaign, and the marine forces are response units called in my the resident planetary guard. So I built my week 1 forces so that they could fit in 2 thunderhawk transports; what I considered an appropriate sized expedition force led by a suitably minor HQ. The list was something along the lines of: WGBL, PW BCx9 Flamer, PW, Rhino GHx5 melta, wulfen, Razorback LFx5 HBx3 MLx2 FWx14 Cyberwolf In successive weeks, I scaled up the force as more company forces responded, sticking to my chosen limitations; eventually topping out with Special characters unlocking in the final weeks, thus giving me access to Chapter governed resources beyond what I thought Ragnar could have at his disposal. Brom MKIV
I think JimmyGuyy might do better than I can in this endeavor, but I have come up with a 2k list anyway. I aimed for the feel of a dark and violent company, ancient by nature with many of its members having succumbed to the curse. A company that revels in close quarters and has seen many battles, leaving each of its remaining packs in remnants of full strength with mostly veterans left and only old and well worn weaponry. In addition I tried to keep the list still functionable (not highly competitive though) with units that could function cohesively yet potentially still make for a good narrative. Not easy. Anyway ive include a short description for some of the units.. and with that said heres what ive got brother: Dark wolves HQ Wolf Lord (grimnar), unleash the beast (living legend)- 275 wolf priest runic armour, jump pack- 145 (joins the skyclaws) ELITE 7 wolf scouts, wgpl- motw/cbflamer, motw, flamer, all have boltguns, 4 sniper rifles- 160 (More than just forward observers these guys are eager killers that infiltrate to support the lords unit. flamers and bolters are the weapons of choice but sniper rifles keep them flexible and just felt appropriate by adding another element of deadly and rending to the unit). lone wulfen, tda, motw, shield, 2 fen wolves- 95 (I know he wasnt on your list but I couldnt resist making a "lone wulfen", essentially a dude who has degenerated too far to be safe around basically anything except other beasts. Anyway hes tough as hell and shreds infantry, and anything short of a land raider for that matter.) TROOPS 8 wolf guard terminators, 2 sword/asscans, 2 pf/sb, 2 swords, 2 axes- 344 (the main backbone of the army meant to take and hold center field. With double asscans they can take on pretty much anything in the game, could be pretty epic.) 5 wolf guard, 1 tda axe/cml, 4 bolter/chainswords- 135 5 wolf guard, 1 tda axe/cml, 4 bolter/chainswords- 135 (The backfield units, think of these guys like scoring long fangs. I felt the list needed a few ranged elements without disrupting the theme too much. Note that all the wolf guard units have taken steps to keep their ranks clear of the unpredictable wulfen, at least for now). 6 grey hunters, wgpl- motw/cbflamer, motw, flamer, razorback- tlhb- 168 6 grey hunters, wgpl- motw/cbflamer, motw, flamer, razorback- tlhb- 168 (The fast units meant to move up to support the lord and get to grips. Again double wulfen and double flamers just felt violent and appropriate along with ye old twin linked heavy bolter transports). FA 7 skyclaws motw, axe, flamer- 161 (marines in the process of de-evolution into wulfen. Not much flexibility for design here but the inclusion of the priest will go a long way to ensure they hit sufficiently hard, and again another fast moving unit to get to grips with the enemy). HS 7 long fangs, wgpl- tda axe/cbplasma, 5 mms, drop pod- 213 (The wolf lords personal retinue. In a dark and mostly veteran great company I felt the lord would surround himself with a personal guard even more elite and destructive than the wolf guard. These guys drop in turn 1 with relentless splitfire multimeltas and plasma shots for maximum impact. Not many units in the meq world can boast what this unit does. At 8 strong with 2 tda counting the lord they have the potential to destroy 1-2 tanks or units and can even gain scoring 2 ways (warlord trait or big guns), gain fnp (warlord trait) and will beat face in combat too. They should enable some very cool scenarios. They should likely be supported early by nearby infiltrating wolf scouts while the 3 fast units move up). TOTAL- 1999 Anyway I know each persons tastes will vary so feel free to change whatever you like or even just trash it if its not your style. Either way id be interested to see what narratives you come up with. Cheers. Edit- btw thats 8 mark of the wulfen total!! And the list condensed for ease of reference: ELITE 7 wolf scouts, wgpl- motw/cbflamer, motw, flamer, all have boltguns, 4 sniper rifles- 160 lone wulfen, tda, motw, shield, 2 fen wolves- 95 TROOPS 8 wolf guard terminators, 2 sword/asscans, 2 pf/sb, 2 swords, 2 axes- 344 5 wolf guard, 1 tda axe/cml, 4 bolter/chainswords- 135 5 wolf guard, 1 tda axe/cml, 4 bolter/chainswords- 135 6 grey hunters, wgpl- motw/cbflamer, motw, flamer, razorback- tlhb- 168 6 grey hunters, wgpl- motw/cbflamer, motw, flamer, razorback- tlhb- 168 FA 7 skyclaws motw, axe, flamer- 161 (+wolf priest runic armour, jump pack- 145) HS 7 long fangs, wgpl- tda axe/cbplasma, 5 mms, drop pod- 213 (+Wolf Lord grimnar- 275) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/266755-narrative-list/#findComment-3251271 Share on other sites
the emperor is scottish
Wow you've put a great deal of thought into this. Ty even for your time man that's awesome. You've got the general feel for the army. The wolf guard and long fangs basically any high ranking wolf in the force have mastered the beast within able to unleash it at will against their enemies or terrified populace. Making bets at what blood claw will make it off the field alive or With their sanity, looking forward to the hunt that ensues after each battle to bring back or put down a brother that falls to far. The sky claw unit are my valkire. Theses guys mark out wolves of valour who might show potential for further progression or fallen enemies who might be brought back from the abyss and given a life beond death of eternal battle. So although I have use blood claws for this unit they are veterans of the army. And I can't believe I missed out the lone wolf lol. My favourite unit in the codex. I was going to go the opposite direction of you and have him being the only person who refuses to go down the same path as his brethren. A beacon of 'normality'. So he's shunned or chooses to fight alone. Buuuut the idea of a lone wolf with mark of the wulfen does seen tasty! And I've seen what one if these guys can do. It's terrifying. I think I've came across to direct and to vague. Although these are the units I've said are a must they are not the be all and end all, theyr only the units I have a back story for so far I guess lol. I think I'd be a tad short sighted not to include one of the most solid units in the game ie long fangs or something as bad ass as a dred. Brom MKIV
Cool glad im at least in the ballpark. As I said feel free to adjust or even just scrap if its not to your liking, I enjoy building themed lists simply as an exercise and it actually helps my own play by thinking outside of my usual confines. Edit- heres an updated list after our PM conversations that closer reflects what your trying to accomplish and keeping in mind the armies you will face. The PM system here on B&C seems to be losing messages so im gonna post the revised list here for reference as well as PM you: HQ grimnar- 275 ELITE 6 wolf scouts, wg- 2 cbplasmas, flamer, motw, 4 snipers, boltguns- 135 lone wulfen, tda, motw, ss- 75 dread, dccw/hf, ac 115 TROOPS 7 wolf guard terminators, 2 sword/acs, 1 pf/sb, 3 swords, 2 axes- 301 6 wolf guard, 1 tda axe/hf, 5 cbplasmas, drop pod- 188 6 wolf guard, 3 tda pf/ss, 3 cbflamers, drop pod- 278 11 grey hunters, wg- tda axe/sb, motw, 2 pg, std- 218 HS 7 long fangs, wg- tda axe/cbplasma, 5 mms, drop pod- 213 7 long fangs, wg- tda axe cml/sb, 5 mls- 203 TOTAL- 2001 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/266755-narrative-list/#findComment-3251933 Share on other sites
