Horns and hooves

I don't have any photos sadly :/ My general way of doing horns and the like (I haven't done many hooves so I don't know if this would work) is starting off with a bone color on the whole surface. Then I start adding layers working towards the tip, getting closer and closer to a very dark almost black brown color. If done right you end up with a lighter base that flows into a very dark tip.

Edit: haha reverse that! darker base, lighter tip.
