Painting Iron Warriors?

Recommended Posts

Hey mate, I'm only new here, but if I may.

I'd use them with Leadbelcher and then highlight using the Necron Compound. Then I'd wash them with thinned Chaos Black and a little bit of Brown. I've recently painted some Ogres using this method and was happy with the reuslts, though I can't post the pics. One other thing I did was to mix in some graphite powder in to the Leadbelcher, just to give it a few lumps and bumps to pick up the highlight and also the washes.

Another option is to spray them with liquid graphite, which you can get from an art shop. It's very different looking and quite striking. You can airbrush that on as normal.

For the hazard stripes, get some Tamiya hobby tape (or any low tack tape) and use those to mask it out before painting on. It's really the best way to go - also, paint your lighter colour on first and then paint the black over that! Much easier than the other way round.

(I've given GW paint names as I assume that's what most people have easy access to!)

Hope that helps!

Things that don't belong in the tutorials area:

Questions that aren't a tutorial for starters.

"What color do I highlight Scorpion Green with?" Isn't a tutorial or even a tutorial question. That is for General PCA Questions.

"Does anyone want a tutorial on X?" If you have a tutorial then just post it. You can find tutorials that people are looking for in the Tutorial Requests Thread.

"Where can I find/buy model/paint/tool X?" Again this is something for General PCA Questions.

Basically if it isn't something that isn't a step by step instruction it shouldn't be in here!

Topic moved.

1. Basecoat black

2. Paint entire model Leadbelcher

3. Wash entire model with Nuln Oil

4. Thick edge highlight of Ironbreaker

5. Thin edge highlight Runefang Steel

As for the hazard stripes, paint the yellow first, then practice keeping your hand steady when painting the black stripes.

assuming you dont have access to an airbrush..

prime black, mix a small amount of black in with your base metal & get a smooth even coat onto the model.

drybrush the model with your base metal colour (no black)

do a very fine drybrush with a bright metal colour.

mix whatever black wash yo want to use with gloss varnish & wash the model removing any excess as you go over it.

for the haz stripes, iyanden darksun as a base, pencil in your stripes lightly, paint them black then highlight 1 side of the stripe with a mix of grey & black (should almost be black) then a final fine highlight with a dark grey.

for the yellow mix bleached bone into the darksun for the 1st highlight & use pure bone for the fine highlight, then wash with ogryn flesh.

be neat, take your time & water down your paints.

well I do mine like this:

black prime

Boltgun metal everything

gehennas gold the parts you want as brass

nuln oil everything

highlight the boltgun metal parts with runefang steel.

Haz stripes I'm still working on. It's quick and looks good enough to play with :P

Back when I was messing about with test models for different legions, the Iron Warriors I did turned out like this (excuse the lack of bolter and unfinished horns...)

That's old-GW colours, but they all have modern equivalents which I'll put in brackets:

Basecoat of boltgun metal (army painter gunmetal) washed with a couple of thin washes of badab black (nuln oil), re-highlighted with boltgun metal, highlighted with chainmail (army painter plate mail) and glazed with thraka green (biel-tan green) in the recesses.

The bronze trim is dwarf bronze (which i forget the modern equivalent of, sorry) shaded with devlan mud (agrax earthshade) and highlighted by adding mithril silver (runefang, i guess, although i don't like any of the new GW silvers) to the bronze, with a very fine edge highlght of pure mithril on the brightest spots.

Hope this helps.
