Njal in 6th

I want to attempt to give Njal a place in my 1850 competitive list with guard allies. However, i'm having trouble figuring out the best way to use him effectively.

Who would you put him with as his 'guardians'? How would the rest of the list be organised in order to get the most effect out of his abilities? Ie .. would it be a foot slogger list/ drop pod list/ Mech heavy? Or some combination?

I'd slap him with a footslogging 10-man Grey Hunter squad with an attached WG Terminator. If you're including IG allies and Njal in TDA, you're probably gonna be too short on points to get a kitted-out TDA Wolf Guard deathstar or anything like that, but it won't be a problem. Grey Hunters are cheap, scoring, shooty and choppy with a Power axe/MoTW/Wolf Standard. Never leave home without them! ;)

Njal's long-range abilities such as Jaws and Living Lightning will be great for advancing up the field, and then you can hit your foes with Murderous Hurricane/Wolf Spirits/Thunderclap or whatever once you're up close.

Anyway, can you give us a rundown of your list so we can see exactly what you're working with already?

Stick him I an infantry blob of 40+ with flames and a commissar and march him right up the middle to sit on the objective there. His turn based skills require you to close the gap. The blob will have ATSKNF, stubborn, reroll able Ld 10!

comissar and RP/njal are a good idea till you fail a Ld test the the commissar executes your high cost HQ.

Change the first sentence to read “If the Commissar has joined a squad chosen from Codex: Imperial Guard and it fails a Morale test, the Commissar will summarily execute the squad’s current commander –
this is the Imperial Guard model in the squad with the highest Leadership value
.”

The infantry blob seems very affective and won a tourney a couple months back. (according to the space wolves blogspot)

It almost seems a waste to give the squad leaders good stuff as I see them dying because of Look Out Sir! for Njal. Plus, lets face it, IG in CC makes it feel like Chuck Norris fighting Gandhi, unless the Tau are involved.

Still Power Weapons are to useful to pass up and which kind to use depends on what armies you'll encounter. I am the only SM player and the MEQ I face most often are Necron.

Then have a vindicator and/or TWC to make tempting targets that move up the board with the Njal blob. Vendetta with vet squad to zoom in and cause trouble. Don't forget a good helping of Grey Hunters and some long fangs and a Leman Russ as backup.

I would have a minimum of 2 Space Wolf IC's. The other depends on your play-style, my pick is a Thunderwolf Lord or a Rune Priest in TDA with the Long Fangs.

It's kind of sad, but a 50 man blob with 5 power axe wielding sergeants is among the most brutal assault units available to non-Xenos players right now. Weight of numbers gives much more effective resilience, since it does not rely on rolling armor or cover saves and much more effective offense since it has enough attacks to be resistant to little probability blips.

I'd argue that the Commissar is totally pointless since Njal gives the unit And They Shall Know No Fear, meaning that getting away from a loss in combat gives you mountains of free shooting and getting caught just means you keep fighting.

Can't you just have a regular Joe Guardsman take the LoS! for Njal (by placing a few close by), rather than assigning that hit to a Sergeant? With several score regular guardsmen around, you should be able to keep your Sergeants and Njal around for a while.
