Which armour for Death Guard

Hi there,

I was wondering if you kind people could help me. I am wanting to make a small death guard army from the heresy minatures but am unsure what armour mark is the most suitable for them. I am looking at ones at Isstvan and during the heresy attacking Terra. Did the Death Guard have a favourite Mark of armour such as MK II OR III? I want to try to make them as fluffy as possible, with correct weapon load outs also, such as what style bolters.

I dont have the betrayal book and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction. Also if they have a preferred terminator armour and weapon load out, that would be very helpful too.

I know they were a primary infantry based army, but any info about specific traits or anything that I might have missed would be appreciated. Thank you ;)

Thanks for any help it's much appreciated.

Mk III Iron Armour imo, it's reinforced to the front and that's the only way the Death Guard go ;) They also used mid range weaponry, such as flamers and melta guns a lot and rely more on marines than armour so heavy support squads are common, although they did use a lot of heavy tanks like fellblades and eventually vindicators.

The Death Guard has mostly been depicted with MK-II and MK-III armour in Forge World's publications.

But if you look at the art from the Horus Heresy card game there were quite a lot of Death Guard wearing MK-IV as well.

As for bolters, I think pretty much anything goes there.

Mk-II and Mk-III are visually and thematically very "Death Guard." The simple, rugged, plentiful, and efficient nature of the Mk-II make it key for the Death Guard as they constantly engage in battles of attrition. Death Guard can take such hits that often the armor will be scrapped but the tough nut inside keeps going. So they take the damaged bits out, slap new bits on, and send the Death Guard Legionnaire back to the fight while fixing up the simple Mk II parts.

The Mk-III suits the Legion's preference for frontal, grinding, assaults and short-range fire fights. I believe it mentions in the Forge World Book Betrayal that they are one of the Legions that often utilized the Mk-III, though I might be misremembering.

Of course, being on the Traitor's side, its is just as likely that they got an influx of the newer Mk-IV ( I think it was) before turning Traitor (Thank you Horus! Merry Death-mas!).

All of these work. It is entirely up to you as to how you want to mix and match.

Early Death Guard would be heavy Mk II as the Dusk Raiders favored that Mk. Later mid Crusade would be heavy Mk III as the replaced lost plate on a one for one basis. Post Ullanor They started using Mk IV heavily. The Principle is to equip each warrior with the absolute best equipment possible at the time. Not sure how the force evolved post Isstvan except to say they where the Plague Marines we all know by the battle of Terra.

mk 2,3 & 4 with a prevelence for mk3 on close quarters units like foot slogging assault marines & the such.

cataphracts are the most aesthetically fitting for death guard termies & armament wise whatever you want.. mortarion was a practical fellow
