Magnet Art

Recommended Posts

Rather than hi-jack another current thread, which insidentily had nothing to do with magnets.

I like to propose peeps post up tutorial links / images of magnet jobs etc.

i just bought my first batch of 100 3mm/1mm magnets from ebay and about to embark on a landspeeder tornado/typhoon job.

id love to see hints tips etc or even pics of jobs that have been done.

anyone got a link on how best to magnetise arms of space marines e.g a chainsword / powersword or bolt pistol, plasma pistol swap?

I implanted 3 mm magnet (but better use 2mm) in SM hand. then I put a pin bit in all swap weapons, easy.

I find it is a tad bit easier just doing it where the arm and body meet. Yes a little more expensive but instead of using 1/16", which are extremely tiny and extremely annoying to use. You can use 1/8".

I tried magnetizing some GK in PA at their wrists. And while the 1/16" were terrific, the sanity I lost was not worth it ;)

Though to be fair I haven't tried using the 1/8" on PA marines yet, I do plan on doing it on a Ravenwing Sergeant I'm thinking of making. I'm assuming it'll work just as well as it did on terminators.

For the most part I use 3mmx1.5mm on arms, where the arm meets the torso at the shoulder. Same for power packs and jump packs.

I have used 1/16x1/32 for guns to hands and so far on one TDA Libby's mélèe right "hand" to "wrist".

Then a mixture of both on my Contemptor so far plus a few ball bearing type magnets too. Lqtm.

For the 1/16 I use a pin vice. The 3mm I use a cordless drill. So much faster and its a pain otherwise to drill into pewter with a pin vice. Lol

I have used 5 or 6mm magnets for dreadnought a torso to pelvis mount.

I haven't done tanks yet but I have ideas similar to those shown above for preds and whatnot. I have however magnetized an ork flyer so it can be any of the three types. Lqtm.

@Raven: Check this for the Landspeeder

Thanks Brothers - magnet addiction is great ;)

I have now standardised to a 2mm x 1.5mm rare earth magnet for most of my models less some larger ones (5mm x 3mm) for the vehicles and I find that these work just great.

You should just be able to get a 2mm x 1.5mm magnet into the wrist and then the cheapest option is to drill a 1mm hole into the hand and insert the head of a small steel panel nail. This will save on magnet costs.

Try it out first - some larger unsupported weapons may cause the hand to "spin" around the magnet causing droopy weapon problems which no amount of blue pills will cure

I am playing safe with my Termies and using a 2mm x 1.5mm magnet in the torso and a magnet in the arm for added safety (I also find that the pins on the AoBR and DV Termies are the same size so I do not need to drill out those arms.....

If anyone needs help on a specific magnet project drop me a PM and I might be able to offer some advice.

I have also magnetised (but not produced a tutorial):

Stormraven weapons/doors

Landspeeder Storm (passengers and weapons)

Landspeeder weapons including missiles and chin weapons

Attack bike weapons

Landraider Crusader Hurr. Bolter/flamer

Tau Battlesuits (XV8/XV88/XV84/XV89 weapons and equipment)

Tau Hammerhead Railgun/Ion cannon

Tau Pirahna Burst cannon/fusion blaster

so you could say I have a little experience with magnets ^_^

I recently used some 1x2 (mm) magnets on one of the DV termi bases to hold some of his "accessories".

What I chose to do, since I purchased a bunch of lightning claws for the DV termies and the black reach guys, was to put the 1x2 in the elbow of the original sword bit and a 1/8" magnet in the body of the unit (sword, bottom left).

I should probably add how I cut the arms off, right? I heat up a thin x-acto blade using a candle and slice the hot knife through the plastic. It's a slow tedious process that leaves behind that black wax that you can see on the bolt pistol, but that washes off with simple green. I haven't attempted to fill extra gaps yet, but I started testing out some liquid green stuff and it worked pretty well.

Here is the model before priming.

Obviously, I've used matching sized drill bits and glued the magnets in. I could have used the 1x2 (mm) magnets on all of the forearms, they are plenty strong enough for this application.

One thing I will change is that when I drilled out the magnets for the lightning claws, I managed to bend the front of the palm out slightly due to the drill bit putting pressure on it. You can see how translucent the plastic is on the lightning claw on the left of the model.

Yes the really tiny magnets are harder to work with, but honestly, I just attach them to the end of a drill bit and use that larger, flatter portion to push the little magnet into the tiny hole.

More on the conversion can be seen here.
