Ludovic's WIP Log

Good morning ladies and gents! :wallbash:

After a few attempts at doing "themed"/project-centered logs here on the B&C, I've decided to just have one big thread for all of my power armour-related stuff. Now, I got some painting done last night and I found myself with this:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lsuoSmqHHj8/UL5h_gaCQYI/AAAAAAAAAD4/qYyGLjr-4Pg/s1600/DSCF9252_small.JPG

I'm pretty happy with the yellow, considering it was painted on a black undercoat and I was using the new GW Base Averland Sunset paint. The washes definitely helped! He's just missing a highlight on his hood and I need to completely paint his gun arm. Hopefully he'll be finished by this week-end! :)

As always, C&C is much appreciated!

Cheers,

Ludovic

Cheers ColdWinter! :wallbash: I'm glad that you like him and I'm not sure about which warband/Legion he'll serve. I'll see when I start painting the Chaos Space Marines! :)

Another update on my Dark Vengeance set. I spent about 3 hours slowly painting it last night and I'm pretty happy with the result!

Here's a mini tutorial on how I painted the armour :P

  1. Black spray undercoat
  2. Basecoat of Caliban Green (2-3 thin layers)
  3. Wash of Army Painted Strong Tone (Nuln Oil is probably a good substitute) in the recesses
  4. Highlight edges with watered-down Warpstone Glow (again, 2-3 layers to build up a solid line)
  5. Extreme highlight with watered-down Moot Green (2-3 thin layers)
  6. Add small dots of White Scar on corners where the light would reflect (edge of shoulder pads, edge of the vent on the helmet, etc...)
  7. Wash of Biel-Tan Green over the whole model

There's some more info on my blog. Of course, C&C is always appreciated!

Cheers,

Ludovic

Greetings brother!

i am also going through the dark vengeance box set and getting them all painted up, i have to say that the Dark Angels themselves have me intimidated, i have never been able to highlight the shoulder guard trim and you have nailed it! what technique did you use? besides the slow and careful one.

anyway good job brother!

Thank you Vadskaer, coming from you, it means a lot :)

Battle8rother: Well, as you say, I took it slow and I used the thinnest brush I had (not sure of the exact size, but it's definitely smaller than the Citadel Small Detail Brush). I also thin my paints down and only put very small quantities on the brush when painting. Thus slows down the process but stops you from ending up with splodges of paint everywhere. Ah, and I also make sure that my hands are steady, so I usually have a bite to eat and a drink of water before sitting down to paint. To be honest, I don't think that there is much more to it than that. You just have to be really patient and willing to accept that you won't nail it the first time :)

Darth Potato: I enjoyed painting this chap so much that I'll probably expand the army when the new 'dex comes out :) It also helps me stop procrastinating about my army and forces me to focus on completing everything! Cheers for the praise too, it's very encouraging!

Brother Tyrax: Thanks mate, I'm glad you like them both! I've never picked up any of the Gaunt's Ghosts books and you've got me curious, so I'll read them as soon as I get my hands on them ;)

Cheers,

Ludovic

EDIT: Apologies for all of the typos, writing with a phone touchscreen keyboard is a nightmare...

EDIT #2: Mistakes corrected.

I thought that when I got my box set too. Gaunt's Ghosts is a good series

Good start BBL. Any progress on the IF army?

I think you should stick to that plan. When you take your time with painting it definitely pays off. And in my opinion, the Dark Angels are a difficult yet rewarding force to paint. Add in the bone armor of the Deathwing and all the black Ravenwing Marines and you've got quite a bit of variety to choose from. It's hard to stick to one Chapter, (the feeling is all too familiar) or minimize your options when you've got a bunch of ideas rolling about in your head, but once you make the pledge it's worth it.

Good luck! :P

Cheers Aquilanus :( For now, no Imperial Fist army, but I do have a pre-heresy project in mind, so maybe in a few months' time... ;)

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking when I sat down and started painting. I've been in the hobby for about seven years now and still no army or anything much to show it. So sticking to the DV box and then expanding that into two armies makes decision-making easier ^_^

So, no pictures today because I get home late tonight and the lighting will be terrible, but I'll get some done of the Dark Angel tomorrow. I finished him last night (apart from markings, which I need to either free-hand or get decals) and I'm pretty happy wih my work! So check back tomorrow for more pictures!

Cheers,

Ludovic

Sure thing :-) is there any more progress on the Dark Angel marine?

I can also warmly recommend the Gaunts Ghosts books - they are a fabulous read.

I finished him last night, so I'll try and get some good pictures tomorrow afternoon :) And I'll try and see if I can order them with some Xmas money!

So, I'm about 95% finished. Just need to put decals/do some freehand for the shoulder pad markings and do the right knee pad Company insignia (that will have to be freehand). I'm pretty happy with the paint job, especially for a first. There are a few things that I have to improve on, such as getting cleaner highlights, making my metallics less boring and just generally making a bit less of a mess when I paint. After a suggestion made by someone on my blog, I'm going to change my metallic painting technique so we'll see how that goes.

I'm not sure what I'll do next, maybe finish off the Cultist I started a few weeks ago. We shall see

C&C is always greatly appreciated!

Cheers,

Ludovic

should

Hey Buddy!

He's sure looking sweet :-)

Tips for you:

Cleaner highlights comes from having the paint thinned enough (but not too much) and then tidy up any mistakes. Also, when highlighting green, I find that the base color needs more pigment (stronger tone) and the final extreme highlight - the one you only paint on corners/edges and the like, ie. where the light reflects - could be one with a more soft tone. For example, the old GW paint Rotting Flesh is my preferred choice for doing these final highlights. It has a nice mix of green tones and bleached bone tones. If I just used a stark green, i.e. Scorpion Green, it would look to cartoonish and neon-like.

And I cannot emphasize it enough - tidy up the lines with the base coat. This is one of my "tricks" for getting the thin, nice lines that I prefer :-)

For the metal, I'd also go for option 2 as described on your blog. However, I would recommend you paint the metal in the base color (Boltgun Metal for example), and then give the recesses (and only these) a controlled wash of black and brown. Then do the highlights on the edges with either Chainmail or Mithril Silver (depending on how sharp an effect you prefer - I personally use Mithril Silver more than Chainmail for this).

All for me for now!

Cheers :-)

Brother Tyrax: Cheers mate :) Glad you like him and he'll definitely have a squad of buddies to go with him sometime in the near future!

Vadskær: If I could, I would seriously man-hug you right now for having given me those tips and encouragement. Now, down to what you said in your comment:

You said that you would use Rotting Flesh (or an equivalent) to highlight the armour adges, but would you replace the Scorpion Green with the RF or would you just add it on top? For tidying up the lines, I didn't think about that but I'll give it a shot. And cheers for the suggestions for painting metal, I'll give that a shot too and see how it goes.

Again, thanks a lot for your tips, they are much appreciated :D

Papa Lazarou: Cheers, I'm glad you like him. As for blinging-up my Dark Angels, I like the fact that the basic troops are quite unadorned, it makes the contrast with the officers and specialists all the stronger :)

batu: Cheers mate, I'm glad you like him. And don't worry, I will closely follow Vadskær's advice ;) Decals are coming, just need to find some!

Cheers,

Ludovic

Hey Ludovic,

Sorry for the delay in my reply - had a nice weekend with the Missus in Copenhagen this weekend, so no painting and no B&C for me :-)

I'd skip the Scorpion Green altogether for the armor - I'd only use it on, say glowing runes or crystals - and go with Rotting Flesh. The way I usually do my green highlights is:

1. Base coat of whatever color tone you wish (for example Dark Angels Green)

2. Highlight with Snot Green

3. Re-highlight with Goblin Green, focussing on where the light would reflect more

4. Final sharp highlight or just dots of Rotting Flesh on select spots.

Here's two examples, the first, my DA Chaplain, where it has been applied with blending, and the second, an older Command Squad battle brother, where it has been applied as described above.

For tidying up lines - I use that very much, and it allows for crisp, fine lines and much more control in regards to how you want your model to appear.

Cheers!
