Exorcists Space Marine Biker Army

Hello B&C!

 

I am pretty new to this site so I apologize if some of my formatting is incorrect. But I have seen so many awesome work in progress posts in here, I wanted to get one started too! It will be great being able to look back and se my army as it progressed once I am all finished.

 

My aim is to create a 2000 point bike army painted in the colors of the Exorcists chapter. I am thinking 6th company.

 

I have already started and painted a few models, so I will get more pictures up as soon as I can.

 

I am a college student and have a job so I may not reply to posts immediately, but don't let that stop you from replying to me or each other ;)

 

I am not a professional painter, and will never claim to be one, but I take pride in my models so please don't be rude.

 

And I am always open to new techniques to help my models look better, especially when it comes to painting skin and basing :(

 

So here it is, my first completely painted biker, my sergeant. He is converted from the sergeant ravenwing biker in the Dark Vengeance starter set. And before anyone asks, the reason I use the chaos helmet with the horns readjusted is because it ends up looking very similar to the Exorcists chapter symbol so I thought it was a neat little way to make the models unique to this chapter :)

I will get a few more shots of my sergeant, as well as a picture of my Stormtalon and two land speeder I have painted, and then the rest of the bikes I'm working on soon!

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your starting model. Please see my comments as intended in the spirit of constuctive criticism.

I like the tone gradation of the red armor, but the sword seems a bit flat in comparison. Also the highlighting of edges looks a bit thick. I'd suggest thinning your paints a little more and work with the side of the brush's bristles against the edge of raised surface you want to highlight, rather than the tip.

It would also be good to drill your bolter barrels and put some more detail on your base.

Finally, as I understand it the 6th company is usually a reserve company made up of tatical squads. Assault squads are more often equipped as rapid response bikers or on landspeeders, so if you want a whole army equipped on bikes then the 8th Reserve (assault) company would make more sense. The Exorcists do depart from the Codex Astartes, but mainly in terms of having 2 extra Scout companies, which is supposedly due to their unusual training techniques which results in a high rate of scouts failing to become full marines. Otherwise I understand that they obey standard codex chapter structure.

First off, 8th company is the company I meant. Need to brush up on my codex astartes :) As for why I chose the Exorcists, as they are not a typical "bike army", I chose them because my original army was Grey Knights, but I grew tired of them, so I picked up vanilla marines. I looked at some fluff and the Exorcists have close ties to the inquisition and are essentially daemon hunters, just as the Grey Knights, so I can have very fluffy allied lists with my Knights if I so chose. Plus their colors are awesome ^_^

 

I can certainly see how the highlighting on the black can end up being somewhat exaggerated due to thicker lines, I will try thinning my paint some for my next models. As for the sword, how would you suggest changing it?

 

At this point, for basing I plan on using the textures brown paint on the base and the wheels and some of the model to make it look as if they are driving across a muddy planet. I then have dead brush and barbed wires I will add here and there.
