MoleMantle
Hi brothers! Seem's as though there are a lot of new people coming to the Space Wolves forum, I have been skulking about as an anon for a couple of months and decided it was finally time to get involved! I used to collect and paint whatever models took my fancy, to a average early teen standard about 10 years ago and have recently (talking about october kinda time) got back into the hobby. I had a few xenos and old metal marines that I stripped and decided Space Wolves would be my flavour of choice. The models look brilliant, the fluff obviously appeals (who doesn't like space vikings?!) and the fact that Grey Hunters are what all tactical marines should be is what dragged me in. The only problem I had was that I didn't want to paint grey (much to the outrage of many I forsee!) so made my own chapter, and am working on some supporting fluff but that can come later. I am thinking a native north American theme to support the ritualistic/animal nature of my troops but also my excuse for the colour scheme I've used. I bought the SW Battleforce and decided to assemble from there 10 BCs and 10 GH and as I'll mainly be playing against 1 friend he's fine with me to proxy them as each other if needed. I was wondering what sort of thing people would suggest for a starter 500 point vs chaos? This is what I had in mind: Wolf priest -Runic armour -Plasma pistol *135 10 Grey Hunters -2 plasma gun -Wolf standard -MotW -Power weapon *185 10 Blood Claws Flamer Power weapon *165 and these leaves me 15 points to play with but this means I have enough stuff to get started without having to rush paint anything else. I also have 6 of the dark venge bikes I picked up on ebay and 5 of the assault on black reach termies that I'm going to use eventually but I have so much to do! Any sort of ideas for either chopping that list about or what to do with my last 15 points would be welcome along with other criticisms. Oh and as of tonight I finally have enough stuff painted to use that list! (some of the power axes/swords are just going to be used as CCW for the time being, and the wolf claw is to mark my MotW marine) http://imgur.com/a/om9Gw <=== link to individual painted models and an overall force picture (yes I need to do the heads but they scare me!) Squark
Welcome to the Fang indeed. Now, onto list commentary. 1)I really don't think plasma pistols belong on anything except Wolf Guard pistoleer builds, and that's only because of the discount. Those points could probably be better used for more wargear on your second troop choice. 2) Your Grey Hunters pack is 200 points, not 185- I think you keep forgetting the cost of power weapons in your units, since the Blood Claws are similarly underpriced 2) Bloodclaws, are, well... Not very good. Grey Hunters will do much better in virtually all situations. Also, Blood Claws really, really don't work if they don't have an IC or Wolf Guard leading them. I'd replace them with something like this 10 Grey Hunters -185 points -2 Plasmaguns, Mark of the Wulfen, Wolf Standard 2 Squads like this and the Wolf Priest will bring you up to 490 points. Add Saga of the Hunter or Meltabombs and a Wolf tail talisman to your wolf priest, and I think you've got your list. helosv
Hello, welcome home, brother... For a 500 points list have tested this one, againts C.SM (498 points): 1 rune priest + storm bolter (103 points) 10 GH + melta + flamer + MotW (170 points) for the close combat 10 GH + 2 plasma guns (160 points) 3 LF + 2 ML (65 points) think you might need anti psychic power against chaos... MotW could take place of the power weapon. If you keep wolf priest: give him wolf tail talisman !!! In this small format, I think that GH are a better choise than BC: second special weapon Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267442-another-newbie/#findComment-3257592 Share on other sites

Ahh whoops, I was running my list in notepad and had updated my total points to 500 but not the cost of my troops selection. The blood claws are 165 because the flamer upgrade is free so it should now total 500.. but soon to be changed anyway! The WP was going to be leading my BCs for preferred enemy was the plan, and I did want to use saga of the hunter but to outflank i need at least 50% of my army on the board so the HQ counts as 1 unit so I would have 2 off the board (i double checked this in the BRB that my friend lent me) I can use my WG as GH though so that won't be a problem just means I need to paint up another plasma gun and MOTW model. In this small format, I think that GH are a better choise than BC: second special weapon I wont need anti psychic in the first game because it's my first game actually playing (watched a few) and my friend has agreed to use his chaos lord instead of his sorceror but I will get my rune priest painted up asap to use for future games! From reading most of the posts people seem to think RPs are the best HQs all round so I will aim to adjust that when I can. Question though why does the RP have a storm bolter? Wont he just be using his powers? Thanks for all the help guys!! Squark
I have no idea why he gave the rune priest a storm bolter, unless he was thinking divination (And even there, I think the extra attack in close combat makes it about even unless you pay the 20 points for Terminator armor- Which is definately worth it, mind you). Divination Rune Priests work best with a full unit of long fangs in my opinion, though, so I don't think you need a storm bolter. Wulfebane
Don't put any of your HQ units in a position where they will give or receive melee without a 2+ save. Runic armor is the preferred method, especially for WPs since they already get a power weapon and the 4++ from their amulets which are better than a TDA's 5++. Actually, Terminator Armor is better for Rune Priests since the 5++ save is the only invulnerable they can get. Wulfebane
In case there's confusion, I did say the "preferred method".. as Rune Priests only comprise 1/4 of our generic HQ options and the remaining 3/4 are more melee-oriented, not to mention RPs shouldn't be in melee anyway - their stats just aren't that great for it comparatively unless you luck out in random biomancy. (at least until i get a TDA rune priest up and running?) then with the TDA RP i assume it should be an axe and SB as his weapons or are force weapons all the same stats? I have a couple of other ideas for lists floating about in notepads but they all require lots more painting before they can get off the ground this is probably the next option: Rune Priest *115 5 Grey Hunters -1 plasma gun -Wolf standard *95 5 Grey Hunters - plasma gun -Wolf standard *95 5 Grey Hunters - plasma gun -Wolf standard *95 3 Wolfguard TDA with Storm Bolter/Power axe (basic loadout due to points) *99 499 or would you suggest not bothering with that one?
