My First Model in Many Years

Recommended Posts

Ladies and Gentlemen of B&C, for your viewing pleasure, I present to you the beginning of something (hopefully) wonderful.

So, a little background story here. I originally became aware of 40K back when Dawn of War: Winter Assault was out, and started an army of Imperial Guard, but after only a couple of battles with it, real life got in the way and I had to put it on indefinite hold. With the release of the Space Marine game, I got back into 40K, and begun planning my new army.

Being an avid RPer and a lover of customisation, I naturally found out about homegrown Chapters and set to work. RL was still being an anoyance and I only ever bought a model when the summer holidays came, so I had very sparse time to work on my future army. I decided early on what this Chapter's lore would be, and set out to see what I could do to emulate that. When conversions came to light, I bought the three models I needed (no prizes for guessing which ones from the pic up above. Got some Bitz off a website, and than a liberal splash of Greenstuff.

The end result is wjhat you see before you. Caddius Venn, Chapter Master of the Blood Giants. Game wise, he is a Generic Marine Captain, mainly because I wanted to get the Mounted Assault rule and I don't feel OB is worth the extra points when you can only use it once. He has all the wargear I could stick on him, I'm still debating whether or not I could put Hellfire Rounds into the Bike's Bolters and keep the Storm Bolter's profile.

I would write more about what hes equipped with but at the time of writing this I am very sick (Dammit Nurgle!). I may give a list when I'm feeling less like my skin is going to peel off.

-Caddius

EDIT: Well bugger, the pic doesn't work. I'll post a link to the picture on DA below:

Interesting conversion, though I'm not sold on the sword. It's generally good to have at least one hand on the throttle, too. Best just to take sidearms and stick em on the bike itself somewhere, strapped on, bolted on, holstered, whatever.

And now to share the same advice every fresh 40k recruit is given...

*whips out rolled up newspaper* Thin those paints! *WHACK!*

Though red is a real mean mother of a color to start out with. It doesn't play nice. I started out with Blood Angels as a pup and I had such thick coats of red it probably improved the marines' armor saves by a point.

Still, patience, multiple thin layers, and you'll get a much prettier end result.

Sorry for taking a while to reply, as I said in my first post, I was incredibly sick and I ended up getting worse after that first post. Thanfully I'm much better now and can post.

While I appreciate the feedback on the paint situation, I feel I should point out a couple of things:

1. I'm not sure what it is in this picture, but it makes the paints look a bit thicker than they actually are. It may be the terrible lighting I was forced to work with but I dunno.

2. The army I'm making for this guy is designed to attend a Tournament happening locally in the summer, unfortunately I have problems with finding the time to work on it, and usually find the only times I can work on it is during my time in the local Games Workshop. With this in mind, I'm focusing on an army that is table-ready paint-wise as I'd never get it done otherwise. I mostly put this up to showcase the conversions and the colour scheme itself.

As for some of the other points. I realise the Counts-as Relic Blade could probably be better, my original intention was to bend the plastic of the chainswords used backwards so that it would taper up to a point, like an actual broadsword. But I had nothing that could heat it enough and had to make do. As for the no hands approach my guy is taking, that was a concious thematic choice, I'm debating on whether or not to use lore saying the bike has foot controls/ Chapter Master just steers by throwing his weight around or simply saying hes currently driving straight and drive-bying some Cultists.

I may take a Scout Bike Grenade Launcher and model it onto the prow if I feel particularly adventurous, so as to visually represent the Aux Grenade Launcher.

What, only getting one comment? I like to hear constructive criticism, even if its only "nice model bro". I realise its not exactly 'Eavy Metal standard, but I wasn't aiming that high, considering it has to be tabletop ready in a limited amount of time, plus it was my first model in 7 years and my first ever solo model.

I'd like to hear more people's opinions about the conversion in particular, fluff-wise, this guy is the Chapter Master, and I'd like to know if I got that feeling across to anyone.
