Lost Angel of the Dark Angels

Hi Brothers,

I've been thinking about piecing together parts to make one of the Heroes in my own Dark Angels fluff.

So after months of kicking ideas around I couldn't wait for the new codex anymore and ordered some parts.

In my fluff the Captain, Gabriel Typheran leads a battle company after returning from the warp. You see... not all the Angels that disappeared during the death of Caliban are Fallen.

A few... A very, very few of the Lions Vanguard that assaulted the planet with him have been found. Although fewer still are those that returned seemingly unbroken. Of those few.. less then a handful have actually returned to the chapters service. Viewed with unending suspicion, and watched constantly they still wage war in their Emperor's and their Primarch's name. A never ending battle that will see the Dark Angels Legi...er.. Chapter the prime protector of the Imperium. (Opps almost let out all the secrets of my fluff. Actually if you have been following the HH series this might not be so far fetched. )

I really like the idea of him, but dislike that normal Masters don't seem to have the punch of a Chaplain or Librarian.

Being a Fluff > Power gaming guy I am trek on.

So after checking bits here and there this is what I've come up with.

I just got all the parts today. They are only tac'd together and I still have to clean mold lines and sand some of the edges.

So don't beat me up too much about them :)

I really like the higher Errant Armor look and wanted to incorporate it in. I'm not a pro at green stuff and the plain look of Plastic-card doesn't always look good. But, I think this was a good compromise.

Who knows what options characters will have whenever the new book comes out.

Lighting claws don't seem to fit in to the knight-monk theme. I like twin swords, and usually use them as twin lightning claws.

I've also been thinking about replacing the power sword in his right hand (the GK one) with another DA claymore, but I'm not sure yet.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3387-1.jpg

A Bionic arm. Not something that would be uncommon to sword fighters. Just ask Anikin Skywalker.

I really like these BA jump packs. They look great on DA characters as long as they are painted with dark colors or washes to keep the somber feel of the Chapter.

I haven't got the left shoulder guard I want on here yet. I've been thinking about this..

http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/images/blood_angels_sanguinary_guard_shoulder_pad_5_large.jpg

Of course I'll remove the Blood Angels symbol and replace it with a winged sword symbol that I have from a Ravenwing box.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3400.jpg

I plan on using green stuff to smooth out his loin cloth and maybe adding to it.

Perhaps something like this. Of course not exactly, but I was thinking of maybe a cloth that drapes down the back. Either way something needs to happen down there. His legs seem too plain compared to the top half of him.

Input?

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3426.jpg

I'll probably add magnets to his jump back and a normal power pack, just to be able to switch them back and forth.

Do you think it's worth it, or is the jump pack too good to not use?

I'm not sure if I like the static look of the legs as they are, but changing them would be an ordeal.

There are not a lot of plastic MK IV legs out there in better poses and I'd have to green stuff them quiet a bit.

I was thinking something closer to this......

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/warhammer-40-000-space-marine-chaplain-with-jump-pack-citadel-finecast-48-63-001.jpg

......would look cool, but my green stuff skills would be majorly tested.

I'm not opposed to changing them, but I'm not 100% convinced I need to do it yet. What do you think?

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3435.jpg

I really like these helms. I cut this one down a bit to give it a more encased look while in the Errant neck guard.

(Again I know I still need to clean the mold lines. They look horrible. Ugh.. my OCD is kicking in. I'm going to do those now. )

And I'm back.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3436.jpg

I got these wings from a High Elves sprue. They really look good on helms I think. They are thinner and flow with the lines of the armor better then most of the wings in 40k.

And with the helm they get me closer to this...

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/1241185495742.jpg

....which looks really cool.

I think I'm going to paint his in similar colors to this pic. My Lost Angels retain their Legion colors.

Bonus pic.

Anyway guys what do you think?

Looks very, very nice. Where did you get that head from?

http://www.maxmini.eu/store/index.php?main...;products_id=60

It says they send you random ones, so you might not get this head. I emailed them, but they never got back to me. I ended up buying the ones I wanted on E-bay just to make sure.

.. I still have 6 or so left :/

This guy is looking very promising, as you say though he definitely needs something on his lower body to bring it up to his torso area. You could fix the loincloth and smooth it out etc or my personal fave is chainmail. I think that could look pretty cool on this guy.

Oooh chainmail. Great idea. Hmmm I'll have to look into making chainmail with greenstuff.

I would be careful of "over-theming"; thats the feeling I got when you mentioned the BA Shoulder pad. I personally think you have enough feathers, seeing as he has a huge pair coming out of his back :D . However, I think you could still make it work. I was just thinking it might be a little busy with the Helm Wings, and the Back Wings, and the chest eagle. I dunno maybe it could work..? I think it might detract from the helm, which seems to be a good focal point for the model.(I'm not a terribly decisive person ^_^ )

I like the model alot! I also like the fluff-based modeling, its nice to see. I think another DA Claymore would be kinda cool, but I also like the Claymore/Powersword combo, since it gives a little character to each sword, which I would see as important with this character.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Great conversion! excellent combination of bits, I particularly like the winged helmet. The only thing I'm not sure about are the dual swords, a combat/storm shield may have been more appropriate. Can't wait to see some paint on him ^_^

My only criticism is the helm, don't get me wrong I love it. But certain fluff nazis out there will point out that it's an Ultramarine develope helmet. and, BRING ON THE FEATHERS! hells yeah, beat the "knightly, Angel of death, monk" vibe to death, not enough hobbyist out there are doing it IMO. great kit bash

I have to say that if someone was merely describing this to me, I'd be thinking, 'Woah, waaaaay to much feathery wing goodness in there' but looking at it, I have to say, I love it, and go for the winged shoulder pad too, it'll be awesome. I do think the legs need a little more bulk though as he's a little top heavy at the mo. Nice work though so far dude.

Total bad:cuss and I think the wings balance is just right. Legs should look good with some sculpted tabard stuff, seals, mail, censors, other bling I think.

Where's his torso from, btw?

It's from the Forgeworld Space Marine Mk IV Command set

Update 12/23/12

So I couldn't stand the static look of his legs and decided to take the leap to change them.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3566_zps50290e9f.jpg

of course I still need to sculpt some in the arms, and clean up the knee I changed. I'm still not a Greenstuff pro.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3567_zps37245a8c.jpg

I made two packs for him and magnetized them so I can change them for my army build.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3570_zpse497beff.jpg

Originally I was going to leave the basic pack simple, but the wings looked good.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3603_zpsa4ec55a1.jpg

I did decide on the BA should guard. It doesn't look bad, and I have a small sword to put in the middle and some minor smoothing

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3582_zps09fb7ed6.jpg

Experimenting with a Mk 4 Helm, but I didn't think it looked as good.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3580_zps80276135.jpg

You can see where I need to fix his knee.

I was hoping that priming him would have made my pics a little better, but it seems to makes things blend together too much.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3600_zps547b0630.jpg

I thought about giving him a shield, but it just didn't seem right.

Anyway I still have work to do, but I think this will be closer to the finished product.

It looks like the wings on the helm are a bit out of alignment. The sword in his left hand is a touch crooked too.

I love the simplicity of the regular backback conversion.

Overall, it's pretty epic. Those little misalignment issues make me grind my teeth a bit though.

As for your GS skills, you're miles ahead of me in that department. :)

Ok, I think I'm done.

This is the biggest kitbash that I've attempted. I've added robes or reworked a weapon before, but this level alteration was a first for me.

My OCD kicked in and removed all the green stuff from the previous attempts. I started again with green stuff to fix his crooked leg mesh. I also remade his talbard a few times until I could finally stand it. Thinking about the barren landscape of his legs, I tried several different things. First off I tried chain mail. Using several different methods, including pressing a metal file into a strip of green stuff which made a cool checker pattern design, but each one didn't seem to fit. I thought about just a lower dress robe, but adding huge chunk of green stuff would only hide the cool mark IV legs that I wanted to show.

After much frustration I found something I think that works.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3640_zpsce961e7f.jpg

I also added what will be additional strips of cloth to give him a more robes appearance.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3635_zps5d335132.jpg

More cloth strips and his secret book.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3626_zpse3350aec.jpg

His pack looks pretty good. I like the Cypherish feel of it without being so dark, because of the skeleton. What do you think?

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/Gabriel%20Typheran/IMG_3669_zps36847c73.jpg

I tried to give him a dynamic look. Hopefully the strips help accomplish that goal.

I reworked his swords to point parallel. I think it looks better that having them at different angles. I know his lead sword is a tad off... It's not a deal breaker for me.

I still have to paint him, which is a whole other ball of wax. Maybe I should commission someone?

Bonus vid... please excuse my near-death x-aco injury and my greenstuff fingernails. Also I this vid was before I aligned his swords.

Anyway what do you think?

I was kicking around making a whole unit of Deathwing power armor veterans.

Bonus Deathwing pics. I like the stark white compared to the bone white that people usually use. I guess I can blame my stormtrooper fetish ^_^

My Belial. I like him more that the static Vitruvian Man that GW just made. Even with my horrid painting.
