Blood Guardians

Recommended Posts

I know i have started a thread on here already for this army, but due to several problems i have had to restart it. I will post pictures with fluff behind them.

First off is my Second Company Captain Decarius Maxamilius:

Born on Epsonri, Decarius was born to the Shajonus tribe that lives in the capital city of Bresepter. When the Blood Guardians arrived to repel the ork invasion, Decarius was only twelve and had fought alongside the Guardians during the final push against the orks in the city. When Dejonus witnessed Decarius slay an Ork single handily with a dull sword. Decarius was inducted into the ranks of the Guardians once the orks had been purged from the planet and they had claimed Epsonri as their home world. He climbed the ranks once he stepped out of the Scouts and was a sergeant of the Second Company. On a campaign in the Zontoris sector on the Eastern Fringe against the Eldar of the Biel-Tan craftworld, the captain of the Second at the time was killed by a blast from a Fire Prism while in a Rhino transport. Decarius lead his squad through heavy fire and destroyed the Fire Prism with a series of krak grenades into the hatch. Upon the completion of the campaign, Decarius was promoted to the rank of Captain

Chaplain Mikilos:

Chaplian Mikilos: During a skirmish fight on the planet of Yelzoris against a small Dark Eldar raiding party, a sergeant noticed one of his squad mates yelling the Litanies at the enemy and he saw some of them flinching at the marines vigor. The sergeant reported it to the Lord of the Black, Lord Chaplain Marcus Viperous. When the Lord Chaplain had listened to the marine, whose name is Mikilos, speak to his brothers before a engagement, Marcus Viperous inducted the brother into the Chaplain Brotherhood to train him and refine his skill. With further teaching and refinement, Mikilos was a full Chaplain and assigned back to the Second.

Librarian Zandoris:

a few years into Captain Decarius’s captaincy, he noticed a young marine by the name Zandoris was showing signs as a potential pysker. Upon further inspection by the Lord Librarian Bre’Kalin, Zandoris was inducted into the Librarium and had begun honing his skills and abilities under the watchful eye of Bre’Kalin himself. When Zandoris had control over his abilities, he was sent to the Second Company upon request of Decarius himself. Zandoris wielded a power sword upon first coming out of his training, but when engaging a World Eaters warband, the leader of the warband broke the sword, thus forcing Zandoris picking up a dropped double headed chainaxe staff weapon and funneling his power through it to kill the leader of the warband. He has since carried that weapon and used it to slay many enemies of the chapter and in the name of the Emperor.

Yikes, you really need to be thinning out your paints more. Part of the problem seems to be that you're not using basecoats when applying thinner colours like gold or red. Make sure you layer nice and thin coats one on top of the other until you achieve the desired finish. Globbing it until you get there obscures detail.

Once you have a handle on that, consider adding some washes and highlights to give your models depth. Black isn't a bad colour to have on marines, but without any additional shading it just looks unpainted. Grey to white edge highlights will make those parts seem less plain.

Thanks Zynk! and some of the parts on the models have been painted over more than once and thus the thick paint issue.

As an option for the future you can give painted models an overnight bath in simple green. Then brush them gently with a wire brush and they're good as new. I've done this on a few models that didn't come out right. Works like a charm ;)

I would agree with everything MattCrawford has said. My own additional personal critique would also be; Try to practice keeping things neat and tidy, such as the armour joints. Even with a simple paint job a clean looking mini can make a lot of difference visually. The easiest way for you to do this on these models would be to simply use a finer brush to cover up those parts.

As previously mentioned some washes or inks would make a big difference to the look of the models, especially on the gold and silver sections. This will help add some some depth and shading to these areas.

And also as previously stated, it's very good to get into the habit of watering down your paints and applying over a few layers. This will give a much smoother finish as well as ensuring that you do not smother any of the finer details, such as small grooves in the armour and facial features.

Highlighting the black armour would also really enhance their look. While you may not yet be comfortable with line highlighting, a simple drybrush of grey to help pick out the edges of the armour will still look effective.
