Testor's Spray-can airbrush

Recommended Posts

I was at the local hobby store yesterday and I found an airbrush that uses a spray can propellant.

The only ones they had used the oil based Testor's paints, but i don't see why I couldn't empty the little jars and fill with better paint. Best part is they were fairly cost efficient at $20-30.

Anyone tried them? Could they be worthwhile for someone just starting to airbrush (like me)?

Personally I wouldn't bother with spray can propellant ones. They end up costing a fortune, the pressure is very unreliable and will probably cause you no end of grief. I got a cheap airbrush/compressor kit from ebay and its been great. I only use it for priming and basecoating right now, but hope to use it to achieve cool effects on power swords and zenithal highlights soon. ;) I'm definitely no expert on airbrushes, but thats my $0.02. There's a ton of people on here who know way more than me and I'm sure they'll be more helpful. B)

You'll end up spending far more on cans of air than you would have on a true airbrush.

Those Testors things are glorified spray guns, and will really only ever be passable for priming and maybe base coats. If you can find one for really cheap secondhand, and arent' sure you want to invest in a full airbrush setup, it won't hurt to buy a single can of air and play around. You just have to keep in mind that it's mostly a toy and you'll want something better for long-term use.
