Slyfox1990
After many months of waiting (delivered to a friend not me, and we've both been busy) I have finally picked up my half of the DV set. Since my friend had never really done anything non-imperial, I allowed him first dibs on the Chaos side. Thankfully I am not at all sad about this; Dark Angels have been a long standing favourite of mine. I've not had a lot of time to paint over the last half year but with getting this new set I felt a new drive, and so far my progress has been (for me) pleasing. I felt I should try to keep myself honest and get this done - so here's my thread to help inspire me. I hope it's of some interest. Advice/comments very much welcome. I don't count myself as a great painter so don't expect too much - but any obvious hints/suggestions will be really welcomed (I just may not achieve the results suggested ) A few images to start - I'm currently working on the tactical squad and soon on the Librarian (vow for December) http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/786/001tdq.jpg This is obviously two identical models compared. One has the basic flat colours done and some work on chest eagle etc. The other has also received the first stage of edge highlighting. Not something I'm great at but making progress for sure! http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/7083/002zuf.jpg Vaguely complete model. Needs some touching up and corrections but as a test model I was very pleased. Sorry for long post - sadly I like to talk (type) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267889-another-wip-thread/ Share on other sites
facmanpob
Welcome to the Rock, brother! Looks like you're off to a good start on the miniatures. Just a quick tip, stick a bit of white paper behind the model you are photographing. The reflected light from the paper will brighten up the photo and show off your models (which look very nice by the way!) in their best light. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267889-another-wip-thread/#findComment-3262756 Share on other sites
Adeptus-Alaska
Nice avatar! I am a former black templar as well. welcome to the first! the mini's look great, really solid work. If you havent done so yet, I strongly suggest you get the citadel: how to paint miniatures guide. It just jammed full of great stuff. It's teaching me batch painting for example. the dvd alone is worth the price IMO Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267889-another-wip-thread/#findComment-3263299 Share on other sites
Slyfox1990
facmanpob - Many thanks for advice on the photo front. I'm never really sure how to get the best out of my limited ability - really useful. furioso - Haha, thanks. Was my first proper army and had a lot of fun with it. Sadly they got a bit stale after a time though. I do indeed have the paint guide and was pleased to note the section on line highlighting - which as you can see I'm using loads. I've never actually checked out the DVD though - perhaps I should sit down some time for a watch through! IndigoJack
Looks good! I might recommend a light drybrushing of screaming skull/bleached bone on the aquila then use the same color to line highlight the tac symbol on the shoulder. The lighter color will contrast really well with the dark green and help those models pop on the table! Slyfox1990
I think the drybrush is a good idea - you can slightly see on the "vaguely finished" model that I've added some lighter colour to the upper part of the chest eagle, but was a litttle tentative about taking it any further. Will try this out. Hopefully more photos to come on the weekend. demio
To be honest I think your painting skills are great. The only way I feel you could improve is by branching out into more advanced techniques and just see what happens. You can find plenty of tutorials on you tube for different thing. Welcome to the Rock the models look great! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267889-another-wip-thread/#findComment-3263959 Share on other sites
Slyfox1990
Thanks demio - much appreciated. I d love to agree, but still need loads more practice. Having said that, I m pretty happy wit current progress. I ve just finished line highlighting all my models, so hopefully get a completed pic up before Christmas at least. Edit: by all models I mean the tactical marines from DV set Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267889-another-wip-thread/#findComment-3265096 Share on other sites
Slyfox1990
So I've been doing a fair bit more work on my first squad and nearing completion. They definitely aren't done yet but probably about 85% there. Thought I would post where they are at now, seeing as I won't get so much done in coming days. http://imageshack.us/a/img838/2263/darkangels003.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img14/494/darkangels002.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img405/6052/darkangels001.jpg Pretty happy with the sergeant.
