Emperor's Furor
I'm finding it really really hard to decide on what legion I want to do, every time I think I've got it, I read something else or I steadily lose enthusiasm, so I thought I'd write down my decision making process here with the hopes you could shine some light on thoughts and choices. The first one is below and it's kind of a major one as it has an effect on the actual legion choice. What Period? This is the first sticking point which swings and roundabouts as it has a massive effect on the general theme of the army as well as the look of it. Crusade Era- Positives - - I love the iconic look and feel of the crusade era legions, when they would come upon a world and decide whether to negotiate compliance, fight it for it or simply destroy the xenos there. - This period in time also allows for different legion schemes before their Primarch turned up or it was changed due to other reasons. - Easily able to explain the use of some of the oldest tech. - Love the Mk II and Mk III armour, my favorite pieces. - Can choose a Legion that eventually turns traitor and play them as loyalists. - Opens the possibility to maybe create one of the lost legions which would allow a lot of personal imagination to be use. Negatives - - Kind of hard to explain it's use during any heresy era campaigns or battles, which may be a lot more prominent due to the books. - Can't use technology that was developed or found during the latter parts of the crusade around the pre heresy time. - Potential change in lore may scupper the basis of the army, such as forgeworld producing a new crusade era colour scheme for a legion. - If you do make your own legion then it may be a rubbish idea and the money used on it may be wasted as it gets mocked. Heresy Era- Positives - - Access to all of the technologies drawn from the books. - Easy to imagine fighting other marines due to the heresy era - A lot of information available for them so less chance of fluff being rewritten. - Really lets u imagine your army is part of the Heresy and it may be easier to immerse yourself and connect with the army. Negatives - - Apart from the different marks, I feel the uniqueness is lost from them, especially the traitor legions who become more like their 40k versions - I don't particularly like the Mk IV armour, it feels to common now and it's lore keeps getting rewritten, originally it as only just put into service before the heresy and not everyone had it, but it appears from all the books that most of them did have it. - Legions may gain significant divergences due to the change around this era, such as the Word Bearers turning red half way through, Emperor's Children going nuts etc which may restrict your army. Tamwulf
The Heresy Era lasted a long time. There is nothing saying you can't play a "loyalist" Sons of Horus or World Eaters army. The simple explanation: They haven't turned yet. It wasn't a snap decision by these Legions to suddenly start worshiping Chaos; it was a long, drawn out affair that culminated at Isstvan. There was a long time between the Crusades and Isstvan. I'm presently leaning towards a Luna Wolf army. I like the monochromatic look of the armor and vehicles. Plus, they have wolves. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267931-deciding-on-my-legion/#findComment-3263237 Share on other sites
Veteran Sergeant
Exactly. It wasn't some sudden, hard point in time. The transition from "Crusade" to "Heresy" is actually rather subtle. In terms of "era" that is. Obviously the Heresy was a defined moment (or series of moments). But the "era", in terms of armor and technology, overlaps quite a bit. The easiest remedy is to make a "Late Crusade" army, and then use all the stuff you want. Ultimately, you have to reconcile any fluff problems in your own head, since they are your models. The good news is, the fluff can't even always agree. Everybody in Battle for the Abyss was wearing Mk VI armor, lol. I mean, yeah, that book was awful, but it's canon, heh. Yogi
I assumed by crusade he meant Luna Wolves, War hounds, Dusk Raiders. They are exclusively crusade. If they didnt change their colour scheme there is no way to tell other then chaos marks etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267931-deciding-on-my-legion/#findComment-3263376 Share on other sites
daveNYC
Just handwavium some loyalist Heresy era Marines from one of the traitor legions. Just say that their Primarch thought they were going to be loyal to him, but the reality of having to fire on their battle brothers made them change their mind about who to side with. If it did, I'll take it down. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/267931-deciding-on-my-legion/#findComment-3263678 Share on other sites
