Androxine Vortex
(This is my custom Space Marine Chapter. For the color scheme, please scroll to the bottom of post) -THE IMMORTAL SONS- "Our faith, unflinching. Our wrath, unyielding. Our loyalty, eternal. Our brethren, immortal." Name : Immortal Sons Warcry : "For the Emperor! For the Imperium!" Founding : Unknown Successors of : Imperial Fists Successor Chapters : None Number : Aprox. 1000 Chapter Master : Osviind Fjørss (Allegedly) Homeworld : Hveldruk Fortress Monastery : Døjvis Morgåst (Translates to "Eternal Shield) Allegiance : Imperium Colors : Black and Blue Specialization : Diversion tactics and defending annexes -HISTORY- The Varex Sector of the Segmentum Tempestus was a relatively isolated and quiet region. It was host to a collection of Hive Worlds and to Varex Prime, a very large Armoury World at the heart of the Sector. Conflict very rarely found its way into the sector and this perhaps led to it being under protected. This proved to be a fatal mistake when a xenos empire, calling themselves the D'juurac, attacked without warning or mercy. Worlds burned under the might of the xenos invasions. Very little is known about the D'juurac. All that is known about this bird-like, reptilian species is that their minds are very attuned to the warp, though there is no evidence that suggests they worship the forces of Chaos. It is speculated by some that the xenos wage war to feed off the warp energies released amidst the destruction and death of worlds they invade. Many forces from the Imperial Navy were sent to confront the xenos but the D'juurac's power was gravely underestimated. Defeat after defeat and loss after loss, worlds and millions continued to perish against the D'juurac. Only after six years of war were the Imperial Fleets able to push back the invaders. Having crippled the D'juurac, they retreated into the warp. Though eager to pursue them, there were very turbulent warp storms in the region that prevented their advance. How the D'juurac were able to navigate with such percision and efficiency, it was not known. The Imperium was currently in the process of a new Founding and the High Lords of Terra issued the command to send one of the newly created Chapters to defend this unprotected Sector. They feared the safety of Varex Prime, a very crucial Armoury World, along with other important worlds under the sovereignty of the Imperium. It was decided that the recruits from the feral world of Hveldruk (which was from the Varex Sector itself) would become the Chapter to have fief over the Sector and protect it. During the process of creating the new Space Marine Chapters, the D'juurac continued their assaults. They would emerge from the warp, attack with deadly ferocity, and then vanish back into the empyrean. Imperial Fleets had great difficulty navigating through the Sector due to increased warp activity. At the zenith of the new Founding, the Immortal Sons Chapter was born. The Chapter was charged with the task of safeguarding the Varex Sector that had been left without ample protection. Their Fortress Monastery was created on the Moon of their homeworld. The Chapter was well supplied having been stationed so close to the Armoury of Varex Prime. This advantage had integrated into the Chapter itself and the Immortal Sons made great use of their vast array of tanks and heavy support. After many years, the warp storms began to receed and the Immortal Sons were able to launch a succesful campaign against the D'juurac. Unable to completly destroy their advesary, the Immortal Sons severely crippled the xenos empire. The D'juurac fled once again into the warp and now they emerge at their whim to make war with mankind and feed off his psychic screams of pain and agony. The D'juurac are a very dangerous threat due to their ability to navigate through the warp with such pinpoint percision even through the most vehement of storms. But the Immortal Sons stand ready to defend the Varex Sector from any foe that might be foolish enough to stand against their might. Since their arrival, not a single world in the region has been lost. -CHAPTER ORGANISATION- The Immortal Sons follow the teachings of the Codex Astartes, though they make more frequent use of Heavy Support. -COMBAT DOCTRINE- Having their Fortress Monastery so close to an Armoury World has been to their advantage. The High Lords of Terra have given the Chapter permission to arm themselves with a wide plethora of weaponry (though not enough that if they were to become traitors that they would pose a colossal threat) The Chapter also excells at defending and holding perimeters. Once they are given an annex to hold, it is nearly impossible for them to lose their objective. They operate in squads just like other Chapters would but the individual squads make great use of diversion tactics. They do not fight very close together and often time it might seem that there are marines running about by themselves. This is not the case at all. It can be almsot guaranteed that where one marine is, another is in a concealed position moving in to flank the opponent. The Immortal Sons never attack from one direction and each marine provides cover for his brother. They attack and move with great coordination. While one marine is reloading, another provides cover fire. While one marine is shooting at an enemy, another is preparing to flank the enemy being pinned down. This method of fighting (in combination with their fequent use of heavy support) proves to be an invaluable asset especially while being outnumbered. -CHAPTER BELIEFS- The Immortal Sons take great pride in protecting the worlds and peoples of mankind but they do not let that pride control them. They look down upon self-glorification and encourage self-sacrifice. Aside from their colors and badge, they do not decorate their armor or embelish themselves. They fight to give all honor to the Imperium, not themselves. They have strong relationships with the planetary governors of the many worlds they protect. -CHAPTER SECRET- The Chapter's duty is to protect the Imperium. They know that failure is not an option. When a battle brother of the Chapter falls in combat, he is taken to their Fortress Monastery and brought to the inner-most chamber, The Chapter's Mausoleum. They bury their dead in secret, covering their bodies witht the banner of the Imperium to find rest and lighting fires that burn their names engraved on their tomb forever. When they recruit from their frozen homeworld of Hveldruk, the new recruit forfeits his name and assumes the one of his predecessor. They even scar their features to match the ones before them. This creates the illusion that that Chapter trully is Immortal. This practice is not a complete secret to all but it is to most. The original Chapter Master decreed this tradition to be done so that when a new recruit joins their ranks, they fight not to glorify their own self. It is believed that the original members even changed their names to words from the language of their homeworld that translated to words of strength and valor. -NOTABLE CAMPAIGNS- The Chapter's most famous campaign was in 667.M39. A massive Ork invasion was heading for Varex Prime. The companies of the Immortal Sons were currently spread out in all directions dealing with rebellions and the D'juurac. Only a very small number of Immortal Sons were able to make way for the planet and they knew that they alone were not enough. They signaled for aid and ships from the Imperial Navy were quick to respond. They also made contact with a company of Salamanders who had just succesfuly hunted down a rogue Imperial fleet. The Salamanders made haste to aid the world of Varex Prime. The Immortal Sons fought for two days, splitting their numbers apart to defend crucial points of the Armoury. The arrival of the Salamanders was an invaluable asset and turned the tides of the battle. More forces of Immortal Sons arrived the following day to fight the seemingly endless horde of Orks. After five days of continuous fighting, the Astartes were finally able to push back the assault. With the combined forces of Immortal Sons, Salamanders, Imperial Ships, and the Guardsmen and planetary defences stationed there, victory was won. The snowy lands of Varex Prime was stained red from the bloodshed. The two Chapters formed a close bond during the fighting and the Salamanders' Captain even admired how well-coordinated the Sons fought. The Salamanders joked that it was ironic to bring them, a chapter so associated with fire, to a world covered in ice and snow and so the battle was known by many as, the Battle of Fire and Ice -QUOTES- "Our faith, unflinching. Our wrath, unyielding. Our loyalty, eternal. Our brethren, immortal." -Immortal Sons chant "Fight not so that mankind would give you honor, fight instead so that you would give honor to mankind." -Chapter Master Osviind Fjørss "Our great responsibility and duty is to protect those that stand under the banner of the Imperium, and to ensure the destruction of those who would stand against it." -Brustrejik Hjåv, 2nd Company Captain -CHAPTER COLORS- http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/s...&download=TRUE I tried doing a Google search of my Chapter but the results didn't show. I want my chapter to show easily online so that someone else doesn't take my Chapter's name (because I had to rename mine like six times because they were already taken) Anyway to make it generate it in results? Messor
Hahaha, I know what you mean about the name, I have a hard time using a name that's already taken. I haven't looked at everything yet, but after reading the Chapter secret I had to go ahead and ring in: That's a pretty brilliant idea! Of course there are some serious challenges to the execution: 1. I can't say for sure, but I assume that in most Chapters, fallen brothers are taken and buried at home, so if this is meant to be part of the illusion, it might not work, unless the illusion is for the benefit of the rest of the Chapter (i.e. they don't know who has died, which again would be really hard to accomplish) 2. What of brothers who, y'know, get vaporized? 3. The immortality by shaping new recruits to appear as their predecessors is cool, epic, in fact, but the effect would be lost unless a) like I said, the illusion is for the Chapter, not anyone else, b ) they fight the same exact enemy repeatedly who would even have a chance to recognize a marine they 'killed' in the last battle, c) A new recruit can also match his voice and skill to that of his forebear instantly, otherwise how can they not notice that Brother X has just become a novice in skill and station? d)They would need a permanent, fixed number for the Chapter, and have to always have recruits on hand to replenish the ranks. Hard to swing if the Chapter ever takes any major losses. If you can tune these, that brilliance is gonna glow for real. Androxine Vortex
All very good points! Like I said the secret is known by many and no the members of the chapter are not trying to hide their fallen brethren from each other. Suppose there was a great warrior named Bill and he did X but died later. Then someone assumed his place in the army and was also named Bill and he did Y. He died and another warrior filled his role and he was named Bill and he did Z. So someone looking at his story would say wow he did x y and z! It is just a formality really and of course people are going to find out. When they ask for more recruits it would be silly if the administration thought they still had 1000 cap warriors right? But to those less informed about the chapter it makes them sound very strong. Now you might be thinking this contradicts their scorn toward self glorification but somewhere in my post it says that the first chapter master declared that everyone would assume this sort of alias role so that the marines wouldn't be trying to give honor and praise to themselves. And onto your point about being vaporized. I'm sure a token grave would have to do. Perhaps theycan gather his Ashes or something. And while it might be common for many chapters to bury their fallen on their home planet remember that not every chapter is the same or even follows the same doctrines. I'm glad you liked it! Hope this clarifies a bit! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268007-the-immortal-sons/#findComment-3264334 Share on other sites
Dark Apostle Thirst
The real problem with vaporization is that there is no geneseed left to base a new successor on. Consider this - even the old heroes retire sometimes, and new blood has to be filled in their place. So new recruits are brought in for those who are 'retired'. I also really love the idea, reminds me a bit of the Halo spartans, who when killed are never marked KIA, rather MIA, creating the illusion that the spartans never die. Final criticism for now, the writing seems very choppy, maybe play with sentences and rewriting them a bit? Ace Debonair
-CHAPTER COLORS- http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/s...&download=TRUE The link appears to be broken. :) I tried doing a Google search of my Chapter but the results didn't show. I want my chapter to show easily online so that someone else doesn't take my Chapter's name (because I had to rename mine like six times because they were already taken) It's not like people can lay claim to the names. ;) There's certainly Infinity Knights and Steel Dragons on the 'net that are much, much older DIYs than mine. Giving your chapter a unique identity is much more important than giving it a unique name. Which, I might add, you've done rather admirably so far. It's like Imperial-Fists-meets-humble-Alpha-Legion, and in a good way. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268007-the-immortal-sons/#findComment-3264505 Share on other sites
NightrawenII
Hell-o here. You have been blesssed with... FEARSOME ATTENTION OF NIGHTRAWENII!!! ;) Founding : Unknown - Vanquish the unknown, a blasphemous Mark of Laziness, the Fifth Chaos God! -History- The Chapter was well supplied having been stationed so close to the Armoury of Varex Prime. This advantage had integrated into the Chapter itself and the Immortal Sons made great use of their vast array of tanks and heavy support. - Here is something to consider. Did you guys noticed how eight of ten DIY Chapters are placed near some good source of industry and furnished with plethora of gear?? Unable to completly destroy their advesary, the Immortal Sons severely crippled the xenos empire. The D'juurac fled once again into the warp and now they emerge at their whim to make war with mankind and feed off his psychic screams of pain and agony. - Is really necessary invent new race of Xenos instead of using the standing one, Dark Eldar spring to mind in this case. -COMBAT DOCTRINE- The Chapter also excells at defending and holding perimeters. Once they are given an annex to hold, it is nearly impossible for them to lose their objective. - You know where is problem? You have been send to fight with elusive, quick-moving and sneaky enemy. Such passive doctrine is never going to work against the D'juurac. They operate in squads just like other Chapters would but the individual squads make great use of diversion tactics. - The purpose of diversion tactic is divert enemy's attention elsewhere and thus conceal your true intention(s). This method of fighting (in combination with their fequent use of heavy support) proves to be an invaluable asset especially while being outnumbered. - Rule of Thumb for Adeptus Astartes: We are always outnumbered. -CHAPTER SECRET- All very good points! While awesome, Messor is right. How would people know? Do your Chapter give its records to the enemies? - The fighters don't exchange their curriculum vitae before each battle. ;) ~NightrawenII. The first, a chapter needs a ton of material and support - it should be a requirement that a DIY has a good source of industry nearby unless it wants to end up like the Marines Malevolent or perhaps the Blazing Sons. The second, it provides flavor, or at least it did for me. Finally, this also provides flavor. They're weak against their enemy - so thus they don't turn into a Mary Sue chapter. You are of course free to disagree :D EDIT: Oh, and of course, welcome back Rawen  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268007-the-immortal-sons/#findComment-3265099 Share on other sites
NightrawenII
While I agree with the other things, these three points I must disagree with. The first, a chapter needs a ton of material and support - it should be a requirement that a DIY has a good source of industry nearby unless it wants to end up like the Marines Malevolent or perhaps the Blazing Sons. Errrm, not exactly. I'm not against well-supplied Chapter (Albeit, the opposite would be refreshing change. :) ). The devil lies in detail. If you look around, not only is the DIY Chapter provided with everything it needs, but with bonus too. This Chapter is glaring example of this trend: "The Chapter was well supplied having been stationed so close to the Armoury of Varex Prime. This advantage had integrated into the Chapter itself and the Immortal Sons made great use of their vast array of tanks and heavy support." *shrugs* This is a observation, I consider funny, rather than something I disagree. Finally, this also provides flavor. They're weak against their enemy - so thus they don't turn into a Mary Sue chapter. But the Immortal Sons were founded to fight with D'juurac in mind. It would make more sence if the Chapter was estabilished before the D'juurac attack, but then again it will force them to change this doctrine. It's not about pwning them every time, it's about having chance to fight with your main adversary. ~NightrawenII.
