Molten Armor and Glowing Runes

I had a fantastic idea for a way to represent the Mark of Khorne on Space Marines. I do have a test model done, but it will have to be later on when I have access to a better camera phone for the picture. In the meantime, here's what I mean:

The idea is that the marines are possessed of the literal burning rage of Khorne, and such is the heat of that rage that it cracks and seethes out of the marine's armor. The actual test mini (that was done after this MS Paint-fu) has a little less in the way of cracks and stuff due to a smaller area and a desire to not make it look as cluttered. I used a loyalist marine body with all the imperial stuff scraped off as a canvas since I not only have some to spare, but didn't want all the Chaosy gubbins getting in the way.

I'm still working on the metallic parts, probably a brownish metal color to show continual heat and burns?

I think it's a very good idea, although for base I'd use black. For metal parts I think a brownish color would clash too much with the fiery molten theme you have, maybe like a dark blackish color? It could turn out great though with brown too maybe I just can't picture it yet.

Edit: Just remembered daemonclaw did something similiar with his marines, maybe try looking into that?

Black is the base, the painter+jpg artifacts destroyed that look. For the metal, I'll probably try a couple different ways (brownish, blackish, etc) to figure it out.

Nusphigor, examine the painter marine's right pauldron a little more closely. ;)

Here are some pictures of the test marine... I haven't had much time to do more than the leg, but you get what I mean about a lesser concentration of lines.

Have you looked at Hakanor's Reavers? Similar painting concept, just yours is more total. You could probably find some tutorials/examples with a simple google search.

Hope I'm not stating the obvious or something

Looking forward to seeing more models!

Edit: Found a link to a tutorial on B&C, although i would prefer smaller lines/cracks:

Tanith Ghost, I see what you mean about it being pattern-like. I figure that will improve as I paint hundreds of little molten lines. :)

Demon2027, it's be worth trying, definitely. I have a hard time keeping dark reds from looking brown, however.

Firepower, good call on making it a little less smooth. Practice should help that, I hope. Also, I spend forever getting marines painted even though I am a swift painter, so I don't mind the labor.

Nicili, interesting tutorial, but I think I like my method of working up the cracks rather than blocking in the black.

Here is an updated concept using the SM Painter and MS Paint, this time with a Chaos Marine. Let's be honest, the Chaos models are awesome! With the smaller number of lines, maybe it won't be clutter up the mini? Chainmail or equivalent for the trim, perhaps? These guys will be part of a Black Legion warband, after all. I won't be able to try a test run on a Chaos Marine until I buy one next week, sadly.

I think the armor trim will break it up nicely :) Chainmail to me would work best, as its will provide a nice contrast (as opposed some brass/gold), just not too bright to detract from the glowing effect you are going for. I also prefer the smaller lines, looks more crackling.

Also, I can't wait to see a a chaos mini painted up with the Khorne Symbol!

I'm thinking the same thing, myself. Should have some test minis come next week (I'm thinking the 3-part squad buffer CSMs should work nicely).

On a related note, I'm thinking of doing a squad of Tzeentch'd out dudes, using the following scheme to denote their mark as well as the invulnerable save:

I may or may not hate myself. :)
