IK Viper
I am picking my way through the SoB codex and looking at possible roles for each unit, with Retributors they are obviouly good in the 4 Hvy Bolter roll. but they can do other things to, with RENDING. I have considered the following possibilibties and wondered if anyone has tried these out in game or can speak to thier effectiveness. Option 1: 5 sister squad in an Rhino/Immolator with 4 Hvy FL 180 ponts for the squad and a Rhino, seams like a nasty unit that can put alot more hurt on the enemy then a similarly costed Battle Sister squad mounted in a Rhino with full kit, plus its mobile, if you get 4 hits with each template your looking at 2.66 Rends on everageplus the other 8 regular wounds, add a combi Plas on the Superior and your looking at killing between 3 and 7 MEQ in one go, though it is obvioulsy very reliant on getting your AoF off :-( Option 2: 10 Retributors in a Rhino kitted with either all bolters to keep them cheap or with some Storm Bolters to add a little punch, or you could go whole hog and take the 4 Hvy Flamers and a combi flamer on the Superior, the idea her being just rolling as many wounds as possible in order to try and generate those Rending hits and give some much needed AP2 in mass. the fully kitted unit of 10 in a Rhino with 4 Hvy FL comes to 240, I would add a combi Plas on the Superior in order to get some assured AP 2 in there also and it comes to 250, assuming you get your AoF off and you can cover 4 people with each flame template, your looking at and average of 2.88 Rending hits from the Flamers and Bolters. Then you have the Combi Plas in there also, and that does not include the AP 4 and 5 wounds you will be inflicting (about 14 wounds). Without the AoF, if you can cover 4 with each template your loking at 16.66 wounds inflicted plus the 2 Plasma shots, so not bad I know both of these are very non-traditional but to be honest if you look at the WD codex there are not many options there but with some creativity it could be interesting at least. The only problem is that if you spam this you now have no Excercists :-( not good Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268055-retributors-alternative-ideas/ Share on other sites
derpasaurus
i've heard that too, but the advice i'd give if you're gonna flame them out and run the front lines is give them more bodies so flamers don't all have to die at once. also you may as well spend the 15 and get the plasma pistol, more constant fire, if you're flaming every turn you're definitely in 12" anyway. might as well have a gun that can shoot ap2 every turn instead of just 1 rapid fire that could very well whiff anyway. or heck, line them up in front of an objective in no man's land and dare someone to come push you off. 4 S5 wall of death ftw i've also heard of naked squads of 10 just doing rending damage. that can be REALLY effective and it costs next to nothing. the main reason i see so many people rolling heavy bolters is with rending you can drop most things from 3 feet away for what, 5 points? the heavy flamer is something like 20 pts each? so it's got some brutal potential but it's one of the most expensive upgrades in the entire codex and you basically have to make a suicide squad to make any decent use of them. but as you pointed out, wow, they can churn some wounds. *Furyou Miko
Unless you floor the field with them, yeah, they're going to be suicide squads. Retricide? :D Actually, they could work as anchor points in an aggressive battle line. Just spam Battle Sister squads and march up the middle with the Retris as the core.
