Appearance of Magnus The Red

Hmm...

I personally -LOVE- the way Magnus The Red drawn by our faithful brother, Aerion the Faithful. However, a few years back, I stumbled upon Phil Sibbering's version of Magnus The Red, I most definitely liked how he portrayed what Magnus looks like.

Just in case if you're wondering, here are two links to images of Magnus The Red:

Aerion The Faithful's version: http://aerion-the-faithful.deviantart.com/...set=24#/d21y9ae

Phil Sibbering's version: http://www.philipsibbering.com/wh40k/09-primarchs.shtml

So what says you? Which one of all portraits you know of Magnus The Red you liked the most? It doesn't have to be those two.

I reiterate what I said, I love BOTH versions of Magnus The Red's portraits.

I must say I'm not so keen on Phil's version, even though I appreciate the effort and thought that went into coming up with that version. Aerion's is better, in fact it's a great piece of art, but I prefer the official illustrations of him, particularly the front cover of A Thousand Sons. The red skin, the Blanche-esque horns and red mane are really quite distinctive, so any version of Magnus that doesn't stray too far from the old Blanche art seems fine by me.

Now that is bad-ass^

Somehow I can't take Aerion's 40K stuff serious at all. Seen a lot of them on the 40K wiki and always mindslam down a heresy stamp on each and everyone of them.

Yeah, I can't say I like either of the depictions of Magnus in the OP. Both are a little too cartoony or manga for my tastes.

At the same time I can appreciate the inherent difficulty in rendering a believable image of a big red cycloptic super-being, so props still go out to anyone out there who try their hand at this. I know I couldn't do it.

Aerion's isn't bad. It isnt accurate, however. He doesn't have two eyes. He was not a REAL cyclops, either. Where his second eye would be, it was smooth and scarred as he never was born/created with one.

I agree. Darog's linked example art is best.

From what I understand Magnus was born with two looking rather human. He had copper colored skin and grew to be the largest of his brothers(tallest).

Supposedly Magnus gave his right eye as part of a deal with the warp to relieve his legion of the flesh change.

As for some people getting the impression that magnus was a cyclops like the beast of myth I have a theory.

The word cyclopean can mean like a cyclops or very large, huge. I've noticed BL authors using the second meaning on more than one occasion. So if that word was used in referance to Magnus that is were the cofusion starts. It could be a discription of his having lost an eye and being a "cyclops" or it could be a referance to his physical size.

Either way he started life with to eyes.

Magnus is similar to the Emperor in that he has no one true face. Sometimes he will have a blue right eye while his left looks like it was mauled by some bear or wolf. Sometimes it will be a left violet eye flecked with gold while the right is covered with smooth, unblemished flesh as though it never existed. There is no one true description. He has one eye and a place where the other should be. What color that eye is and, more importantly, which eye is still there, always depends on the viewer.
