Airbrushing Orange

Hey guys,

I'm getting back into the hobby after a few years and this time around I want to make a go with an airbrush. I wanted a type of obscure but recognized chapter so I chose the Knights of Gryphonne and got abunch of shoulder pads from chapter house studios. I need a good formula for airbrushing orange. The method I was thinking about was like Les Bursleys, IE airbrushing a base color over my primer, then 45 degrees 1:1 lighter shade, then highlight on points of interest with 1:2 lighter shade. Plan on using Vallejo Air. Any input on the actual colors I should use? Or any other methods that might be helpful? At what point do I wash and highlight, varnish? When do I weather? You guys get the point. Thanks for any help that's forthcoming! Love this place!

Edit: Vallejo Colors to Vallejo Air

Well done on getting back into the hobby, I came back recently after many years. :) I've also recently got asn airbrush and I'm also using Les's tuts as a guideline (especially for my Deathwing) As for colour selection GW have a painting guide here. I know that you are planning to use Vallejo colours, and there are plenty of equivalency charts on the net (unfortunately I don't have any saved to my favourites and I'm too lazy to look...) so you should be able to get something close. Good luck!
Thanks for the response. That is pretty cool, and I like the fire dragon color. Hmmm. My only concern is that if I were to base coat with the airbrush then wash, then use the airbrush for highlights i'd cover up some of the wash because it's not as exact as using a brush. Hmmm.....maybe I need to go back and watch s'more of Les's tuts.
Yeah I was thinking regular old three color highlight with airbrush (exact orange colors to be decided) matt varnish, paint all reds, blacks, browns and metallic and then glossing. Oil wash, varnish. I shouldn't be adding any decals cuz I have Griffin shoulder pads 3D style, I like them way better. A little bit more like the Son of Medusa he did. Oh, I plan on painting bolters seperate, as well as any leather packs, combat weapons so on and so forth then adding them and the black backpack after the first matt varnish. What do you think?
Well I'm just gonna do everything on mine before any varnish (except decals and washes) so I only gott varnish each type once. Basically finish the model, gloss, decals, wash, then seal with matt. (I'm in the middle of nowhere so I gotta be frugal with my stuff cos it'll be impossible to replace til I get home) I mean if you wanna do things seperate, by all means. I'm no expert, and whatever works for you, go ahead with. ;)
