Olis
I suggest matte unless you want shiny models. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268783-model-finishes/#findComment-3273857 Share on other sites
Blood Reaver
i was also thinking about matte, but heard gloss was the most protective, is that true? Olis
As far as I can tell (and having checked on it a while back), no it isn't true. Here's a helpful blog on the issue. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268783-model-finishes/#findComment-3273866 Share on other sites
Blood Reaver
How do u apply matte? Just paint it on? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268783-model-finishes/#findComment-3273869 Share on other sites
Olis
You can brush it on or you could spray it on. Here's a thread on varnishes from not too long ago. I hope it may prove helpful. Blood Reaver
Correct me if im wrong because i want to get this right. 1) Warm up model with hair dryer (necessary?) 2) Apply Gloss varnish and let it dry (30 - 60 mins?) 3) Apply Matte varnish on top of gloss and let it dry Seems like a lot of work for a single model o.o not to mention an army. Olis
Uh... the warming up thing was to correct an issue the OP had. Applying gloss then matte is a standard practice, though. Alright, that thread might have been a little technical - what I used to do was spray on matt, rather than brush it on. That way you can do whole squads at a time. Blood Reaver
One last question, since i brush everything on, i shouldn't water down primers and varnishes right? Just apply them straight out the pot? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268783-model-finishes/#findComment-3273908 Share on other sites
Olis
Tbh, I'm not sure - I've only ever sprayed on varnish. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268783-model-finishes/#findComment-3273910 Share on other sites
S.k.i.t.t.l.e
One last question, since i brush everything on, i shouldn't water down primers and varnishes right? Just apply them straight out the pot? I thin my primer before using it (just once) by paintbrush. I have to thin it for airbrushing. I was looking at my vanishes too, and both say they can be thinned with water. I don't think my matt warnish will need it as its quite thin already, but my gloss might need a little thinning. (Either for brush or airbrushing) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268783-model-finishes/#findComment-3275077 Share on other sites
GumbaFish
I think it depends on what you are using, if its water based then it is fine. I personally water down my brush on varnishes a bit so there aren't brush strokes and it helps to get into all of the little crevaces easier.
