Anaraion
This came up in the other thread on Logan and his LFs... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=268840 Now I wasn't sure if I should post there or here, but the basic question is this, besides drop podding with Logan or some special suicide flank mission does anyone field LF multi-meltas effectively? And if so how? At 24" range, I see them as a bit of a red-headed step child in normal LF units. I see great synergy with normal MLs and LCs and have perused this article (concerning devastators which is not quite LFs) repeatedly trying to see if I am missing anything... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=256229 Bottom-line I am finalizing what LFs to paint and wanted to check and see if I was missing anything. So any solid tactical uses I am missing please share so I can better understand their usefulness and increase my knowledge. Thanks in advance and Happy New Year. Long Fang
Hey, I very occasionally run them with Logan, but I only really have a unit with multi-meltas for completeness and apoc games. Could be deadly in city fight i suppose. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268950-multi-melt-lfs/#findComment-3276220 Share on other sites
Einarr
Do you often play with a lot of terrain? Do your opponents typically field vehicle-heavy armies? If so they could be useful. Missile launchers are still the ultimate take-all-comers heavy weapon though. Thanks for sharing so far and if anyone else has insight please share. MayorDaley
Happy New Year, I run a LF squad with 2xMMs, and 3xHBs, PlasmaGun on the Sgt, with an attachted WG with combi-Plasma, all riding in a Rhino. The WG could be dropped, and the Rhino could become a Razorback.(I did try 2x Plasma pistols on the Sgt and WG, but the cost/range, just didn't seem to work well for me.) This unit is used as a mid-field unit that backs up Grey Hunters in Drop-pods. Another favorite is: 3xPCs, 2xMLs, Sgt with PlasmaGun, riding in a Las/Plas Razorback; it's a bit pricey but it gets it's pts back almost every game. I think if you paint up 2 MMs you should be fine, 3/4 at the most. Cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268950-multi-melt-lfs/#findComment-3276935 Share on other sites
Valerian
Just my advice, so take it or leave it, but you did ask. I wouldn't ever bother with giving a Long Fang a Multi-melta. Sure it would work using the Logan Grimnar Relentless Drop Pod trick, but then you've committed a Long Fang Pack to an Alpha Strike, where a couple of Wolf Guard with Combi-Meltas could probably achieve the same or better results. I don't play with Grimnar, so this trick is out for me regardless. So, leaving that aside, just consider the weapon itself. It only has real value within 12". Anything from 12 to 24" and it is barely better than a Missile Launcher (same strength, but it does have the AP1 advantage). It has half of the overall range to a Missile Launcher and lacks the ML's flexibility (Krak vice Frag choices). Ask yourself how likely it is that you're going to want your Fire Support unit (the Long Fangs) to fight within 12" of their target; I'm guessing that the answer is rarely. Much better, in my estimation, to give those Fangs some weapons with good range so that they can affect a larger portion of the game board and provide support to all/most of your other units as needed. Good long ranged fire is particularly important when the Long Fangs have very little mobility (at least no ability to move and still fire effectively). Save Multi-meltas for platforms that do have mobility (like Land Raiders, Land Speeders, and Attack Bikes). These platforms have the ability to get within that 12" range and still fire, and actually make a difference. Best, Valerian Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/268950-multi-melt-lfs/#findComment-3277466 Share on other sites
Brom MKIV
It works with grimnar, other than that there are better choices for a static firebase unit. The reason podded MM long fangs are good, besides dropping in at close range, is the ability to split fire which makes the unit into 2 podded melta units rolled into one pod at a reasonable cost (if already taking logan) and the unit is pretty durable. Anaraion
Again thanks for all the replies!! Think I am pretty clear now and will have a unit painted up in Logan's colors just in case I get the urge to drop or rhino in . Grey Mage
Being able to walk and snap-fire has helped them a little bit. Im far more likely to take them in a DPing force than I ever was before. Id also consider them if I was taking an indomitable fortress, just for the extra protection.
