Way1and
Here's the latest on my Winter's Advance vow. Started with a base coat of Krylon Gray ('cause I'm too cheap to pick up a can each of white and black!) I'm using Plaid FolkArt paints, which you can pick up at Wal*Mart or Hobby Lobby. The colors seem to correspond rather well (Boardwalk Blue is a dead ringer for Space Wolf Grey) and they're about $1.00 a bottle. I gave all three a wash of off-black ("Licorice") and then let them sit for about a month. The first, I tried a heavy drybrush of white ("Antique Ivory", I think) but didn't get the effect I wanted. I went back over it with a gray wash, a light coat of the Boardwalk Blue, followed by a lighter drybrush of the white. The second, I got fancy. I laid down gray for the main coat, then put a line of Licorice across the head and down to the tail. I used Boardwalk Blue on the underbelly the same way. Then I drybrushed the gray and black with the Boardwalk Blue and the underbelly with white. The cybernetics I based with metallic Wrought Iron and drybrushed with Aluminum. The effect on the coat is great, but the cybernetics are lost in the gray coat. Any suggestions for making them pop? The last fellow was heavily washed with Burnt Sienna and drybrushed with Dark Flesh. I'm not so pleased with him. Maybe once I work the details (nails, teeth, eyes) he'll look a bit more alive. What's that, heret... I mean, m'lord Rune Priest? That young fellow in the background? Pay no attention to him. There's no crusade to see here... :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269049-way1ands-thunderwolves/ Share on other sites
infyrana
Cybernetics... two quick suggestions to make them pop. Firstly you can use whatever your Space Wolves grey is (ie the more blue tint if you use GW's colour scheme), and secondly, just paint a different colour metal to them, highlighting (if you do metalics) with bright mithril for damaged edges. As for the third fella with the browned fur, there's a painting guide on youtube for thunderwolf cavalry which I'd highly recommend. No links at the moment, but it's mostly done using airbrushing. The point of viewing it isn't to get you to airbrush, far from it, but to see how the person uses the colours (from paws, legs, under belly, and top of the body) to bring the wolf fur alive. Giving the paws a brighter white'ish fur, the mid section a dulled cream with hints of tan, the mid body line more tanned brown, and the upper back/spine area a darker coat. Just check google for pictures of wolves to see the colour variations from the bottom to the top of the wolf. In addition, there's doing enough highlighting of the fur to really make the depth of colours stand out. I wish you luck :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269049-way1ands-thunderwolves/#findComment-3277434 Share on other sites
Way1and
Another night's worth of work. Think I'll start on the riders now. It sucks that all I have is the cam phone, but it is what it is. I stumbled on a cool way of doing the eyes quite by accident. You can barely see the results in the photos but here it is. I dabbed a bit of black wash into the eye socket to give it definition, when I went back to lay a coat of whit to put the yellow over, I left a single dot of white. Looking at it from all angles, I realized that it looked fairly much like the light point glinting off overshadowed eyes and, to my mind, looked quite menacing! So I did them all that way! infyrana, I didn't get a chance to see the youtube bit, but I did go back and use the suggestions you gave. I'm quite pleased with the results.
