Running Legion Praetor's....

As the title suggests Im looking to see what units make good bodyguards for my Praetor?

I running this Build:

Artificer armour/Iron Halo, Paragon Blade, Combi-weapon, Digital Lasers

Built as primarily as a combat fighter, he wants to be up close and personal.....

the rest of the list is based around two 15 man Legion tactical squads, one holding an aegis line, the other to advance with a support squad of plasmas

and a 20 man squad with an apothecary and a libraian,

my thoughts are:

Legion Command Squad (5)

with power weapons and Combat Shields

This unit is as resilient as Terminators and pack WS5- with 3 attacks each the unit is no pushover- the disadvantage is the low model count compared to other units in the army

what are your thoughts and ideas??

Command Squad, hands down in any config is a good option. It just simply is the best option for the Praetor. The Praetor is an absolute beast of a beatstick character ( for a Marine ).

One thing you could consider is putting them on the ( sadly expensive ) jetbike option. It gives you 6 heavy bolters ontop of everything else, plus T5. It makes them exceedingly expensive, admittedly, but exceedingly awesome! You could, if you keep them on foot, attach an Apothecary. Or if on Jetbikes, add a Primus Medicae, although you use up one of your HQ slots for that option.

in the current set-up i have them with an apothecary in Artificer armour not sold on the power weapon seeing as the rest of the squad have them,

are 5 enough to survive? also with 5 power weapons would you do 2 axes and 3 swords? or 4 swords 1 axe (as the Praetor has an ap 2 weapon??)

will they be ok foot slogging with the rest of the army??

Command Squad, Veterans or even TDA squads are a classic ;)

If you want something.. less conventional I'm currently thinking about a Praetor with jump pack in a 20 men assault sqaud for a Son of Horus army.

All of those bulky models can be very unseful with Merciless Fighters rule ;)

By the way I really like the idea of a Praetor on jet bikes. It can be quite expesive (both game and money wise) if you want to give him a unit of Sky Hunters but it can be extremely fun.

Watching the reaction of Eldar, Dark Eldar, and Sammael ;) , players when they realize they are not the only owners of jet bikes is priceles ;)

It's as survivable as any other 5 man, fearless, 2+ armour save, WS5 melee death squad. If your opponent gets a chance to focus fire them to death, they're going to die. They are a beatstick squad, but don't confuse them with a deathstar squad. They're still Marines, afterall.

As for power weapons, that boils down to personal preference. Myself, I avoided power weapons entirely and went with combat shields on all but the Banner Bearer, who has a power sword. I found the cheap invunerable save more useful when my Command Squad gets drawn into a combat where Ap2 melee weapons are more likely, like other command squads or terminator units.

Honestly, at the end of the day, the squad's layout isn't a matter of effectiveness. They'll be effective against nearly everything thanks to their good armour and WS5. What matters is what you support them with, what targets you put them up against and how you get them there ( Rhino, Land Raider, Storm Eagle, Drop Pod, Jump Pack, Jetbike, Deep Strike ). Those are what you should think about most, not the perfect ratio to axes and swords. If you want them to take axes, take axes! Go nuts with them! Axes, Mauls and Swords are all viable in the hands of the Chosen Command Squad.

I find that the Comand Squad is limited to 5 Marines where as a tactical Vet Squad has 10, the bolters, bolt pistol and CCW combo makes them more flexible.

Pretor wit Paragon Blade and Boarding Shield

9 Man Tactical Vet Squad (so they still fit inside transport) with Power Weapons (3 Power Axes), Melta Gun and I give them Furious charge.

not sure weather to throw a power fist on the Sgt.

Why boarding shield? An Iron Halo is a far better choice. If you could take both of them it would have granted you defensive grenades but since you have to choose Iron Halo is better.

I recently played two small (1000 pts) matches and the tact squad with additional CCW and an apothecary proved to be a nice retinue for my Praetor.

It was a small match on a smaller table (120x120 cm, namely 4'X4') inspired by the old boardiding mission mode. So a slight modified version of the current Zone Mortalis. I should test Praetor+Tac squad combo in a standard game.

thanks for the replies! definatley some things to think about, the veteran squad looks interesting.... but is the loss of artificer armour a major setback?

You do not lose artificer armour. You Praetor will have it unless you acquire TDA and you can give artificer to the sergeant msn-wink.gif
