Demon2027 Alpha Legion

Hey guys. I got a load of forgeworld bits for Christmas, so I decided to push ahead with a project I have been planning for a while - 30k Alpha Legion. I'm thinking of setting them sometime past Istvaan V and I have a few good ideas of how to represent their change to their 40 selves. Here is my first test model, I'm not entirely happy how he has come out, so I may do another. This one was a bit rushed so I may take my time on the next test guy.

My first attempt at the Legion symbol, I think I need a slightly darker green.

Here is also a WIP of the start of my first Legion tactical squad member proper

I like him :) The bolter could be in an other color, to create some contrast.

I think the Legion symbole looks ver good for a free hand, great work.

Second guy looks cool too. Very Alpha Legion.

Im very curios about the way you will make them past Istvaan V.

Very interseting !

Hmmm not sure what colour to do the bolter. I'm not a fan of the brightly coloured ones.

Here the first 5 members of my first Tactical squad ready to paint. I wasn't sure on the sergeants head, but thought it looked cool so went with it.

Thanks Ludovic. The thing with the Alpha Legion is that they are every where but you just don't see them ;)

2nd test model done, and while he probally doesn't look to different from the first he is a bit more blue (which is not evident from the photo), and has a lighter highlight. Unfortunatly a combination of the weather and a need to replace a lot of light bulbs in my house has made it hard to get a picture.

I wasn't sure what to put on the right sholder pad so I went with a hydra. It could do some work tbh but hopefully as I paint more, I will be ale to paint them better. On the left knee pad I added the greek symbol Theta (his squad), think it looks like a clock though. Also I'm not keen on the bolter, not sure what would be the best color though, maybe just metalic.

On the work bench I have started on my Praetor, here's where I am so far

Not really much to look at the mo, but hopefully by the weekend I will have sorted out the legs which look a bit ugly and added some decoration to the torso. Does anyone have any good idea for how to represent an archaeotech pistol?

Super Alphas!

Just 2 points if I may as a fellow operative:

1. Allegedly the entire legion was equipped with Mk IV armour ( however easy enough to explain the presence of Mk V and it certainly features in plenty of artwork)

And

2. The brother with the magnoculars, well he seems to be holding them the wrong way around.

But seriously, minor points and I am really liking the paint scheme!

Looking forward to more!

Thanks guys

Nighthunters: on the squad, I have only used mark IV. The new legion mark IV set has studs and stuff, and a variation on helmets. There are also slightly different poses. I may mix in the odd bit of Mark V occasionally. I didn't realise the magnoculars are the wrong way round though so will try and fix that. Thanks :)

I did a bit more work on my Praetor last night, and I'm not back at work until tomorrow (nights, bah) so will hopefully get a bit more done today but here's where he is at the moment

My initial idea was to sculpt on hydras to the torso, which, as I found out when they turned out looking like cartoon crocodiles, was a bit overambitious. So plan B was a plainer, reinforced look.

The idea behind him is that he is wearing a modified set of armour combining the extra armour of the Mark III with the advanced systems of the Mark IV. By the end of the day I hope he will have arms.

No worries mate. I remember seeing your Alphas in the 'tale of 20 gamers' blog, really like them. Are you still working on them?

Anyway finished for the night, made lots of progress today:

The head is not stuck down, I need to add a grill to the left side of his face. I added a bolter to his left side but I may swap this out for a combi-bolter as the flexibility (and nasty surprise element) appeals to the Alpharius in me. Obviously there is still a lot of green stuff needed to repair some of the damage done to the legs.

Let me know what you think, painting on him, and the first 5 tactical marines, will start on Friday.

Yup, I'm with Bantu, super work!

Still working on mine too brother, got an original mk1 pred and 5 more marines ready to go, may have to give them some attention soon !!

Just a little tip on the braiding, it looks great but if you fancy it looking more, well, braidy?!? Then try rolling 2 really skinny roles of great stuff around each other, if you let it cure for a little bit first you can wind it quite tight without it coming apart and it can be pulled gently to make the braid really thin, have a look at my standard bearer with the lightning claw and you will see what I mean.

None the less keep it up brother!

Well I haven't undercoated him yet. I decided to add a bit of detail to his right gauntlet, just a little box, with a smaller box cut away and a little button added on. Its to represent the controls of a refractor shield. I may thinking about adding some laser points to the right gauntlet to represent digital weapons, so i may go back and do what you guys have suggested for the braiding, as its a good idea and will certainly look better.

I also had an idea for my next hq and seeker squads which will represent Effrit stealth squads. I'm going to use mark V and a little mark IV to represent maintenance of the armour in the field, and possible scavenging from the enemy.

Nighthunter: looking forward to seeing more from you dude, really like what you have already done.

I started to paint my Praetor but I wasn't happy with the outcome so I gave him a detox bath, then I forgot about him for a month. After a wash, and a bit of a scrub he was left in several bit, and the greenstuff had expanded (in a hilarious way), and some of the details had sort of dissolved.. Decided it was a good opportunity to make some changes and refine him a bit. Here's the progress of my effort so far:

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Heresy%20Alpha%20Legion/image_zps67fa9311.jpg

I attempted more of a braid for the decoration, and changed the helmet to match the cover of Legion. One of the biggest changes is the backpack, I have used one from theLegion Reconnisance Squad, but I have added the bolter. I like the practical look. I may have to see if I can accessorise all my backpacks in a similar way.

Also received a large order from forge world, with more to come (it's my birthday soon and I heavily hinted at a Contemptor)

ETL Vow:

I Demon2027, answer the call of E TENEBRAE LUX and vow to complete 1 Praetor, 1 Master of Signal, a 5 man Cataphractii terminator squad, a 5 man Reconnaisance squad, and one Contemptor dreadnought from HH:Betrayal of total value of 855 points on or before August 15th. Success will bring eternal glory to the Alpha Legion and failure will doom me to bear the Badge of Shame until the year-end.

Despite painting 3 and a half models last year I have decided to vow to paint 855 points worth in a handful of months. Thankfully FW have released their artwork for the Alpha Legion so I have something to work off. First WIP is very much that, still have 2terminators to finish and a lot to do on the dread. The Praetor is once more n a few bits as I make yet more changes and the recon squad havent left their bag. And please ignore the lonley looking Thallax at the back. He is not part of the vow, just couldn't resist putting one together.

http://i1276.photobucket.com/albums/y471/Demon2027/Heresy%20Alpha%20Legion/image_zps4ec5aae2.jpg

Oh and I made a bit of a mistake with the vows point cost. When adding it up I did 4 volkite chargers on the terminator squad. There's only room for 3 so I added a grenade harness to the sgt. It's worth more points then a volkite anyway.

These look great! Always good to see another Alpha Legion brother, especially one so talented with the brush! Personally, I don't think any HQ unit should go without a power weapon (I even think Loken's wargear in his sculpt is absurd), but that's totally my personal notion. Maybe holding the sword backwards like the knife? I'm excited to see where this goes reguardless of your wargear choices though!
