Nicodemus Dolorosus' Imperial Guard

Recommended Posts

I was an Imperial Guard general before I started building my Blood Angels. I started IG back in 3rd edition with the Big Black Book "codex" and ran Praetorians. I later sold them for reasons that I can no longer remember, and played Sisters of Battle for many years before returning to IG in the twilight years of 3rd. Sold them after I got married and then in the final year of 5th Edition returned to the hobby. I've been slowly building up this army over a couple years -- with four children and a busy law practice, I don't have much time. But here's what I have accomplished so far:

I think I should eventually get my hands on some Death Korps of Kreig commissars since the regular ones are a bit too big. Although I initially purposely chose regular ones, since the codex states that commissars are assigned to regiments other than from their own homeworld. They might still wear gas masks, though. Not sure, since my 2nd platoon, led by Captain Aleksandr Rachemovicz (Al'Rahem) is going to be Cadian models with a dot-pattern camo.

Here is Inquisitor Ambro (Marbo) plus two inquisitorial henchmen (veterans with flamers) who accompany Inquisitor Soulis (Straken) when he takes the field:

The fluff behind the army is that they come from the planet Sorgrece which was overrun by Chaos Forces/the Blood Pact. With the help of Inquisitor Soulis along with sisters of the Adepta Sororitas and the Angels Sorrowful (Blood Angels successors) they were ultimately able to regain their planet after decades of bloody war and atomic purging. They continue to have heavy inquisitorial "supervision" to ensure no Chaos taint after the years of occupation. Hence the storm troopers painted in Inquisitorial colours, and the use of Inquisition-themed HQ units. Now that we have access to allies again, I may invest in real inquisitors at some point. But I do like the ones I have made using IG rules.

Just a very brief run-down. I can post more fluff later, but suffice to say that my army are religious zealots with a fair bit of Red Redemption influence (although the nobility who form the officer cadre are not Redemptorists). They have massive supply problems and the planet itself is reduced to about early 20th century levels so they only have access to meltaguns, flamers, and basic Russes. The Inquisition contingent is the only one that may use plasma, Valkyries, or more advanced vehicle variants. It's a personal "rule" that my army must always contain 1+ inquisitorial character (easily accomplished, since I have a Company Command Squad version and Primaris Psyker version) and 1+ Inquisitorial storm trooper squad.

Elmo, thanks. Actually, I realized that's an old pic. Since I took it, I did drill out the flamer barrels and straightened the officer's sword (3rd attempt - the trick was putting it in ice water right after straightening it).

I love the muted colors of the DKOK , very fitting and you got nice force.

Some small advice if you have some money to spend: Get grenadiers instead of the kaskin/stormtroopers for stromtroopers, they look so much better, esspecially in a DKOK army.

Some advice on painting your tanks: Try to be a bit messy with your camo color, that way it might seem more transitional.

Also , but that might be personal: I never use a very dark color as a base color below the color i want, i iether use a wash to wash the whole verhicle or i highlight the camo color i want, what i am reffering to is the very dark brown line next to the brown camo color.

If this is intentional: forget i ever said anything :)

Keep it up! We want to see more!

Brother Lorien: I do have some DKoK grenadiers, but my plan is to us them as a veterans quad with grenadiers doctrine. I already have them set-up with 2x melta and a heavy flamer for the purpose just haven't painted them yet. I hear what you're saying, they are awesome models, but I like the Kasrkin models for the inquisitorial troops to set them apart.

Also, the camo was intentional. Personally I like the way it looks.

Here is another unit I forgot to post. You must understand the fluff behind them to appreciate why I have Catachans in this army. Inquisitor Soulis (in the gold armour above) first made his appearance in my Sisters of Battle army in early/mid-3rd edition. He was the first model that I spent big bucks on to buy lots of different bitz and convert nicely. The first battle I used him in was for a batle report for batreps.com (which sadly no longer exists) against my friend who was using a Catachan Death World army at the time. In that battle Inquisitor Soulis was ambushed by a special weapons squad with a demo pack and instant deathed. Also, his power fist-weiling Commisar Akrim killed my canoness. So, in retribution for this, I worked into my fluff that Soulis got rebuilt (hence the use of Straken rules), hunted down the Catachans, and made them into penal legionaires. Commissar Akrim got his power fist forcibly removed (hence the rolled-up sleeve):

  • 3 months later...

Update on my force, I finally tore myself away from my Blood Angels and put battle damage/dirt on one of the Russes:

It's a bit shiny from the Agrax Earthshade, but once I seal it with Army Painter Anti-Shine Matte Varnish that will be a thing of the past.

Edited to add a second view (sorry for the darkness -- I'm still in the process of moving so haven't got my regular painting area complete with lights set up yet):
