He took a pretty hard established list. It was a imperial guard grey knight list

I had no idea what this game would bring, and had never faced a imperial guard list before.

His list was something like this

Hq

Coteaz

Inquisitor in termie armor (rode with deathstar)

Elite

9 psyker battle squad, with primaris pysker (took psyshriek), in chimera

Jokaroo x2, servitor w/ multimelta x4, someone with two plasmaguns, chimera

Autocan Rifleman dread with psbolt

Troop

10 Shrike squad, psybolt, psybolterback ( razoback with h. Bolter and psy ammo

Guard squad, plasmagun x2, psybolterback

Guard squad, plasmagun x2, psybolterback

Guard squad, plasmagun x2, psybolterback

Guardsmen manning icarus lascan behind aegis

Fast attack

Vendetta

Hvy

Manticore

Fortification

Aegis with icarus

Hammer and  anvil, crusade mission, 3 objectives, i didnt really know his list bforehand. He used some kind of servo skull which he deployed in a line across the midfield which has a 12" bubble that cant be scout moved into. Luckily there was a 2" window that was uncovered on the left flank that i exploited.

I put one 30" from my table edge far to the right  near some line of sight blocking terrain, and one in my deployment zone. The plan was to scout the bikes forward and drop the kinghts with attached libby close to their delpoyment zone. And drop belial and command squad in the back field to drop the manticore and cause havoc to give the knights time to advance. As long as my opponent could be forced to deal with the elite units in on the left side my troops would be slowly advanceing on the right, hopefully keeping them safe. Meanwhile i would keep the plascannon squad in the back field to act as deterrent for coming too close. I would also push the termie troops and other tactical squad towards the objective and try to break his transport with cyclones? I  hoped to use the meltagun to kill his transports when they got close. The dark talon would support the attackers, the dark shroud would support the bikes.

The game played out like this, ill hit the highlights.

Da turn one

Scouted, Dropped teleporters witout incident. A combat squad of shrikes behind the aegis line was shot by the bikes and command squad, while the cyclone of the command squad shot the manticore, immobilizing it :(

Guard/grey 1

All three guard razorback disembark and shred the command squad. Leaving belial with one wound left, ouch. Meanwhile the psyker battle squad, reduce dw knight Ld to 2, i fail 4+ deny withch, he cast psy shreik, i fail again. Time to make 9 invul saves, no chance. Leaving libby with one wound and one knight, they are promptly killed to mass shooting. Double ouch. manticore pounds away, but no kills.

Da turn 2

No reserves. I was kind of bummed that my expensive models were dropping so fast, especially with the dw knights. Black knights were three strong at this point, but they vaulted over the aegis fireing into the the psyker chimera wrecking it, then assaulting it the psykers rolling four dice per model, +1 s, rending. Good bye psykers. Of course now the bikes were in the open, and likely doomed. Then belial took 3 game turns to chew through two guard squads always killing off squads on the opponent turn. I slowly advance the troops toward the wall as long as i remained focused on the objective i may win.

Imp2

No reserves. Black knights die to massed fire. Manticore keeps pounding troops but my armour holds. Dread is stunned.

da 3

No reserves. Move up troops destroy a weapon on a razorback. Had i run the tactical squad to ensure no line of sight, i may have survived better. But ended up losing my meltagun and several marines. The mysterious middle objective is found to be sabotaged. Great....

Imp3 vendetta comes in... But explodes in a hail of lascannon fire. Haha! Small comfort as my dread would die afterwards. Other half of shrike squad moves toward my troops who now hold the right flank objective. They kill several termies. marines are down to two but hold leadership.

Da4

Darktalon arrives. The intercepting lascanon misses. It is able to blind the guardsmen manning the aegis, who also hold the imperial objective. they go to ground. Termie troops move to engage the strike squad and their razorback. The cyclone and lighting claw is still alive plus one storm bolt guy. The strike squad die in assault, but this leaves the termies in the open.

Imp4

The termies die to massed fire. The razorback near them attempts to ram the darkshroud, but it gets its cover save. It later dies to a manticore missle. The other chimera countaing the 4 multimeltas and deathstar moves forward, to get in range of a turn 5 denial.

Da 5

Not much too really do here. Belial has chewed through two squads, and is about to assault the guardsmen manning the icarus. I try droping the stasis bomb with the dark talon, as im too close for anything else but it scatters away this would have made things easier for belial, dropping their weap skill way down. He pulls them off the objective but then dies in assault, efectively giving my opponent a +2 vp margin, i lose line break, he gains slay warlord.

Imp5

Cleanup time, as he takes middle objective with his deathstar that is also scoring.

Imperial victory 8-3

Things that worked.

Black knights killed nearly half a strike squad, and an entire squad of psykers including their ride. Five knights felt good these guys hit like a ton of bricks.

Belial big guy did all he could but couldnt kill all the guard himself

Darkshroud helped protect bikes when possible but i broke him off to turbo boost into the troops turn 3. Played its role well.

Undecided

Deathwing Knights not enough info suffered from being very unlucky.

Darktalon with its late arrival it couldnt do much. The rift cannon is the only useful wargear, the others are just situational. It seems like this kind of occupies the same role as the black knight grenade launcher, but the black knights do it better.

Things that didnt work

Dw command with banner was a waste of points. Next time i would be better off with an all hammer squad. The way i deep struck was a trap i fell into by being greedy, and was a fool but the banner is still a waste of points. Maybe the apoth could have helped but i doubt it.

Overall this list lacked anti tank. And his list was mech heavy. I would have dropped the dark talon against alI those tanks. devastators may be the way to go with that. I also think that it would have been better to only have two deathwing squads. Them plus the black knights would have been enough to cause backfield havoc. I think using azreal and the reserve roll change might be the better strategy.

That 4+ Deny the Witch failure HURTS! I'm sorry that that happened, but otherwise you've just seen the most practical solution to mass terminators. Strong psychic powers and mass fire. One thing I'd reccomend is definitely investing in Devastators. They not only provide a stable firing platform with mass missile launchers, but they also provide a distraction that your opponent (especially mech-heavy) wants to take out ASAP. Considering Flakk Missiles being added to them, you've got your answer to almost every situation you could come up against. That would be a sufficient exchange for the poor command squad. Expensive units NEED transports desperately. When the shiny command squad with a banner is on the field and a dozen terminators are on as well... Plus bikes... Those poor termis are going to get mowed down. Fast.
Yeah some lessons are learned hard. I may need to put the knights in a crusader. Im not sure how it will go down yet. I got a little unlucky in this game but my strategy was always gonna be tough to pull off without anti mech. The aegis line makes it tough to kill stuff so im thinking the cheap whirlwind may be a good solution.

Interesting report mate. Looks like his list was mostly tailored to take yours on.

Anyway I used to just read your reports because you did a good job writing them and they were fun to read but now with all the daunting DA rumors....I'll be paying attention to learn your weaknesses! tongue.png

I too played a game recently with Deep Striking Knights and feel they needed a little bit mobility. I'm going to try to take a Land Raider of some type as well. Hopefully that'll make them work a little bit better. And I highly recommend a Whirlwind. I found that it was tough for it to NOT make it's points back in the last codex. Now that it's lowered? Automatic take. No questions asked.

Also how was Belial equipped? I'm assuming SoS and SB.
