Thirdfox
I had initially started building a small Space Wolf army during the middle of last year but i had to set aside work on it due to real-life issues getting in the way. I was able to resume work on it during the holidays again and this is what i currently have as progress. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/IMG_0017_zps2df66960.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/DSC00920_zps206dcd3f.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/DSC00923_zps5a0381e3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/DSC00924_zps7f1b150a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/DSC00932_zps7379591c.jpg I made a bit of a mistake with the GH pack below. The guy with the power sword is supposed to be included in the pack above. I only noticed after i had already uploaded the pictures. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/DSC00931_zpsd3b3fe48.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/DSC00938_zps54c7e95d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/DSC00943_zpsee031070.jpg The Dreadnought on the right has dual autocannons converted from a lascannon and missile launcher arm, with the barrels taken from some old mecha plamo kits i had lying around. I'm still searching for something suitable to use as ammo drums for it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/Vlka%20Fenryka/IMG_0015_zps6c6f9e59.jpg I've used a can of local aerosol lacquer as the primer and Tamiya acrylics as the basecoat for these minis. The bare heads are still primer black since i'm still pretty scared about starting the fleshtones on them. Not pictured are two Lone Wolves, a Wolf Priest converted from a Jump-Pack Chaplain, two Rune Priest and a converted Lord Blackmane, all of which are still in the priming stage. irwit
That's mental, I think I'm doing a lot when I glue 5 marines together at once, you've got a decent sized at,y there! Every credit for keeping it going, braver than me! jamsight
Good start looking clean and tidy but could I suggest a wash of black to put a little bit of depth to them and bring out the detail Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269547-an-aspirant-resumes-his-training/#findComment-3285762 Share on other sites
Grizzly Adams
Looks great, you're well on your way! I will second the wash suggestion, washes would really add a lot of depth and character to your models. I used a mud/agrax earth shade wash on mine, and it made a big difference. Thirdfox
Time to face my fears and work on the skin and hair of my Sky Warriors. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01528.jpg I think most turned out well enough for a first try. The blondes might need reworking though. Blacksad
wash will greatly improve the look of the hair and skin too. earthshade washes seem to be everyone's favourite. I'd suggest giving that a go, before deciding wether or not they need reworking. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269547-an-aspirant-resumes-his-training/#findComment-3380334 Share on other sites
Thirdfox
Oh, the flesh has already been washed and highlighted, just lightly to give the guys that slightly-pale "iceworlder" look. The brunettes and the old guys have also had their hair washed as well. The redheads look alright in my opinion. It's just the blondes that i'm slightly annoyed at right now. My fellow frostborn, aside from washing, do you have any ideas to tone down the overtly yellow color or do i have to start back from square one? Thirdfox
Tried the following on the bright blonde hair: * wash of watered-down X-9 Brown and XF-55 Deck Tan. * light coat of a 1:8 mix of X-2 White and XF-72 JSSDF Brown http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01538.jpg Looks like it worked then. Thanks a whole bunch for the suggestion, Irwit. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269547-an-aspirant-resumes-his-training/#findComment-3382284 Share on other sites
irwit
I would try again witha darker brown. Theres a lot of detail in the hair on the models that should be able to be picked out nicely. You dont want to water it down too much remember or you are going more along the lines of glazing your model rather than washing it. So far it definately seems to of taken that unnatural yellow from and looks more natural now. I like the bases btw, looking good! :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269547-an-aspirant-resumes-his-training/#findComment-3383324 Share on other sites
spjaco
Wow, great looking work. Keep it up. I remember when I tried doing so many models at once it seemed like I dug a hole for myself. So I just resolved to paint five at a time until completion and that made a big difference for me. Always avoided the brighter yellows for hair myself but the others advice is spot on. Washes do almost always seem to work. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269547-an-aspirant-resumes-his-training/#findComment-3383342 Share on other sites
Thirdfox
@irwit I'll give glazing a try next time i do bare heads. I'm still learning a lot at this point but i'll definitely keep at it. @spjaco Thanks. Glad you like the work. My progress is pretty slow since i started this army in May of last year and i only work on it sparingly. In other news, was able to put up the base colors on a Wolf Priest i converted last year. Next day off, ill start working on the other small details i missed. The wolf fur cape and the pelts on the front are my first attempt at sculpting fur. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01542.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01543.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01544.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01545.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01546.jpg After i finish the Wolf Priest, these guys are next. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v318/thirdfox/WH40K/DSC01541.jpg A Rune Priest and two Wolf Guard in power armor. No idea what to colors to use on the shield though. Greylocke
Shade your blondes with brown and highlight with a bleached bone type colour I actually flip this. I base paint with bleached bone or tan, then wash with chesnut ink. Then highlight with bright yellow then a bit of white. I have problems with red hair. What's your formula? Grimtooth
Just to drop in a tip, I use the old Sunburst Yellow and then mix in 50/50 Sunburst Yellow and Blazing Orange. Then if I want ti redder, add more Blazing Orange. I will come back and link when I finally paint up some gingers. Thirdfox
For mine, I just used a quick basecoat of Tamiya X-6 Orange. Washed it with some X-9 Brown then a light recoating of the first coat. I might add a little red to the mix if i want it darker. Thirdfox
No varnish yet since there's still a few small details i need to finish but i'm planning to use a coat of local gloss spray clearcoat for strength followed by Golden Acrylic matte varnish. I'll be borrowing a friend's airbrush for the last step.
