Angels of Vengeance

Angelic and Hebrew are almost interchangeable. tongue.png

Anyways, I suggested Metatron because it sounds strong, and isn't quite as immediately recognizable as the Angeliel Raphael of Gabriel. Also, it has a sounding that suggests strength to my ears. A tuff-sounding name for an Archangel from a Chapter with deeds less well-known seems appropriate.

Those Knights look fantastic Midnight Angel! The blue-black robes work really well - especally the Chaplain and the Plasma Cannon guy!

Keep going mate - and if you're looking for names try the Book of Names in Isiah's amazing site: The Dark Fortress: http://www.thedarkfortress.co.uk/index.htm

Thanks. I was trying to stick to the fluff with the black robes of the inner circle but needed them to stand out against the black armor. As for the red and Christmas tree look that is why I kept the green accent dark and very subtle. I am debating on using green on my battle company company markings because I want to avoid extra green but after seeing captain sempers cncecrators I will probably just stick to standard dark angel comany markings. Sadly all my pictures don't give my models justice, need a better camera and setup, or just find someone who can take great pictures of these guys.

Thanks guys the name for the character wasn't really the issue I just had not decided one what name. I went with metatron because the meaning of the name said he was an archangel second only to god. So it will work as the master of the death wing is second only to the chapter master. What I was needing most was a banner idea. Tonight it hit me. Looking at the model, I used the shoulder pad with the angel holding the blade in reverence. I decided to simply copy that to his back banner.

Since Belial is normally the keeper of the blade of secrets for the dark angels, Metatron will be guardian of the blade of repentance. The blade of repentance is not a weapon of war but one of torture. He does not wield it in war but is symbolic of the fallen they seek. For the angels of vengeance have no problem killing the fallen rather than letting them escape but it is metatrons task to capture them so they may repent their sins.

So no pic updates tonight, but Belial has his banner finished and him and the death wing knights have their robes and flesh done, and the red and white sections of their armor are base coated and being worked on. I also have two five man termie squads in progress as well just for kicks till I get the black knights box set in later this week. The second nephilim will be ordered end of next week.

Thanks again for helping keep me motivated this month.

Another Update but still no pics.

So I got my black knigth squad in friday, got them assembled with a quickness and primed.  Been working on the death wing knights, black knights, and Belial over the past several days when I cna find some time to apply some colors.  I hope to have them done by friday for sure, and I just placed the order for that second Nephlim, plus the bits/models I will need for a planned conversion.

Been really thinking about it, and although the conversion I did on the Dark Vengeance Model will work as an Azrael substitute, I am not relaly happy with it as a solid representation of the Angels of Vengeance Chapter Master.   I really like some aspects of the Chorazin model that was online, so I have decided to convert a new Chorazin stand in for my army.  I really want an agressive model, not a stoic character, just standing their, but an action posed model, seeking vengeance on the fallen.   That being said, I had to scour the range to base my new Chorazin conversion off of.   I decided to go with Gabriel Seth, the flesh tearers character.  I really like the pose, he is swinging the big sword in combat.   I already plan to remove the chain sword part, and replace the head, as well as the backpack, but I want to keep the cloak part, so I might convert the backpack.   I am going to do a little sculpting, add the angels of vengeance icon on his shoulder pad, as well as to his chest, remove all the blood angels/flesh tearer icons.  I debated on giving him a bionic arm.  One I have to scour my bitz box, to see if I have a spare one left, I could replace it, but I might skip over the bionic arm that was in the other Chorazin Conversion.

I know I could just create my own name for my chapter master, but since that one is out their, it was in white dwarf, I really just like the name and I am trying to convert my own version up as a tribute to the artist who sculpted the other one.

It will be some work, maybe I can have the conversion done by the end of the month.

Can't wait to finish these two units I have sitting on my table right now, they are currently about 80% finished.   I have to weather them, finish the green sections, the robes on the one black knight, the display panels on the bikes, the lights on the bikes, the base work of course, and finish highlighting the gold, and a few little details like opticals and name plates, and purity seals last highlight and scribble.

I am really enjoying how the black knights are turning out.   I did decide to go with more gold and bling on these bikes, as opposed to all the excessive white detailing Heavy Metal did on the offical paint scheme.  I really wanted them to stand out as veterans and appear more gothic looking, than just excessive white on black.  My only gripe about the models and the kit, is that they are all wearing beaky helms.  I could understand some beakies, but the only helmeted heads in the kit were beakies.   They don't feel very knight like, especially considering how their gauntless and grieves look, and the robed guy even has the thigh plates.  If I get more of them, I may have to make the other 3 that go with this unit, have knight like helms instead of beaks.

Either way, my next update will have pictures.   I hope to get that flyer painted next week by next friday if I can.  I am getting a game in on saturday and plan to take the camera with me for an updated army shot on a table with some terrain.   Maybe I can even get  the other two terminator squads that I started finished by then, just depends on my class load.

Oh yeah forgot the whole reason I was updating.   I am actually sort of stuck on Belials sword.  I am not sure how I want to paint it.   Most of my army is going with bare metal swords.  This is different than my usual of painting power weapons in colors.   That being said, I am not sure if I should just go with a bare metal, or go with an obsidian look to the sword (their is already so much black), or go with more of a black base with greenish edges to give it a slight glow. I would prefer blue, but the green would fit better in the army with the plasma cannons.  Maybe I will go with a bluish glow, as I do want the trinity of swords to be represented in the army, just not sure how I should paint up this sword of silence stand in.   However I paint this one, I will copy for my chapter master, and Sammael stand in when I get around to fleshing out my ravenwing elements.

Picture update.  So, I have finished the models for my vow, all except for the second nephilim which I am still awaiting on.     I also updated the picture of my librarian, but I don't think the updated picutre helped at all.   I will have to update the vow when I get that last picture of the nephilim with Mega Bolter.

First up, Death wing characters.  Yes Characters because I wanted to also give you guys a better image of the chaplain.  So I present to you, Grand Master Metatron, and Interrogator Chaplain Zahriel (I think thats the name on his leg that can't be seen from the image.)

Next up is the Death Wing Knights unit, led by Knight Master Hadriel.

And lastly, the Black Knigth unit.  I still have to drill out the guns on these three, I apparently have misplaced my drill, so I guess I will have to invest in a new one next time I am at the store, till then they will have to do without drilled weapons.  I really like how the robes turned out, the red robes are such a nice break from the black robes worn by members of the Inner Circle, and since the only ones in the Innercircle and ravenwing are the characters, I get to give them red robes.  These 3 will accompany my Librarian on the battlefield, as his personal escort.   And incase someone askes, yes the number 1's are all hand painted, those circles are great for keeping hand painted unit numbers the same size.

I will try for a group shot next weekend when I am at the store.  Since My schools webpage is down, i can't work on my art assignments without the videos to draw from, so more painting tonight.  Time to work off those first two death wing units, and maybe start applying some paint to my ravenwing squadron that is to accompany that land speeder.  If I get those done before the flyer arrives, I will probably start working on my only tactical squad after I get those 3 units done, and next week I will start working on the conversion for my New Chapter Master.

The shadowing is definitely a lighting trick.   I was trying to get their faces to show when photoing them, but no matter how I placed the lighting to get the photos, I still got shadows.

Thanks guys.  As for the black, well the black is simply just a single rough highlight of great coat grey (privateer press paint), and then I did some quick silver (again Privateer press color), weathering, as I wanted them to look a little worn.    The black robes are black mixxed with shadow grey.   The red, I used the privateer range of reds, which is more like a brick red, brighter red gore color, and then a little bit of a blood angels like color.   I have swapped to using privateer paints in the last year cause well, they don't seem to dry out as fast as GW paints.  I also have some vallejo and reaper, but I don't think I used any of those colors except reapers Misty Grey, which provides a solid base coat for the white.

The greens are GW greens, well the older ones of dark angels, snot and scorpion, but the green ropes across them is a mix between dark angels green and rucksack tan, to give it a more leathery feel and add some variety in the greens.     My biggest trick is the use of black wash.  I have didis magic ink, and thats what I use, mostly cause its a grey buy for the cost and amount you get, and every time I head to a store, to get some black wash, they are always out.    I did mix a red wash for the robes and the tail fins on the bikes, which is 3 parts red ink to one part black ink.   I like using the thinner inks over the modern GW washes, as they seem to shadow everythign nicely but don't feel like a thin waxy coating that resembles a dip method.

As for the chaplain, I did a better job blending his robes, but that was I think because I painted him seperatly, while my belial I did as part of painting the whole lot.  You sort of cut corners and speed things up when you paint 6 terminators and 3 bikes at once hehehe.

Ok, So been busy the past couple of days working on this new conversion for my Angels of Vengeance Chapter Master.    Not sure what I am going to do about the DV conversion I did, but I just had to have a more dynamic character leading my army, and one that to me felt more like an Angel of Vengeance than a Robed Wanna Be General.   I know I should be focusing on my second nephilim, and I am painting it, just had to finish this conversion.  Once you get a motivation, sometimes its best to follow it through to completion, at least the converting part.  The nephilim is being worked on, its assembled, primed, metal parts are based and washed, and I plan to finish the cockpit tonight and start some of the hand drawn details first.

Anyways, I present to you my new Chorazin, Grand Master of the Angels of Vengeance.   He will start being painted, after I finish my Nephilim, probably next week sometime.   Sorry the pics came out so blurry, I really need a permanent setup.  Guess I need to be further away again when I snap the photos.

So the model is based off the Flesh Tearer Character.  I really just loved the pose and the suit.  I wanted some robed elements, but not a full on skirt.  So I removed the flesh tearer elements, but left some of the wings, mainly on the belt, and knee.  Those winged sections became great areas to add a hooded skull to, so I did.   I added a robed section similar to the DW knights.   I also added army icon on his shoulder pad, and added a crossed key/broken sword to the other shoulder pad (where I left some purity seals at cause well, it saves me having to add more later).  I also gave him a hood, and kept the cape from the backpack.  I gave him a new backpack, and because I just like those winged vents, I added those to the backpack.  Still trying to figure out the best way to hollow out the vents on the wings, will work on that after I get a new drill set.  I also added the combi plasma to his back and attached a strap going around his sholder pad, or at least up to it and in between the pad and his collar armor.   I debated on whether or not to just go with a normal bolter and attach the plasma element to the sword, but decided I didn't want to mess with the sword, as my sculpting skills are limited, and I liked the way the sword looked already.    I need to come up with a new helmet bearer, so might strip the old helmet off and convert a new helmet.  The plan is to have the new helmet look like a skull face.   I plan to paint the hood in red, but the rest of his robes in black.  The hood is seperate attached cloth element, and with the hood up, helmet on, he will resemble the chapter symbol.  Its an idea, but still one to think about, as it sort of feels cheesy.   However, I think the wing vents will be painted in gold, not white.

Well back to school work so I can get more time to finish this second Nephilim.

Yeah. Debated on replacing that arm with a mechanical arm, just didn,t want to deal with reposing it and my sculpting skills aren't as strong. So I opted not to bother with the mechnical arm. It isn't so much an exact conversion of the amazing one done by Chris Borer, but simple my rendition inspired by his lovely model.

Update.  Finished my second Nephilim, this one with the Mega Bolter.   So my Vow is now completed.  and hey, before the 22nd instead of the 31st too.  Now to finish my Chapter Master.

and just because I can...My airforce...cause two jet fighters are better than one.

Just ace job on both accounts.

So Corazin is the actual (as in fluff) grandmaster, or the name for the other converted model and it just stuck around?

EDIT: I must be getting old, I was wondering why the 'grey sprey' had different shades.....Epic facepalm.

Seth is finecasted now isnt he?

to answer you question, not its not 100% official, it was the name that Chris Borer gave to a model he converted back in 2007, it did appear in white dwarf, so it would be like semi official.

Here is the link to his awesome conversion. http://www.fullborerminiatures.com/gallery/chorazin.html

However, the name is just awesome, because it was once a hebrew town, and as a persons name it is hebrew,so it fits into dark angels naming conventions.  The town is a village that jesus apparently did mightyworks, but because they didn't repent of their sinful ways was cursed, it was one of three towns.   The name for a person however means "the Secret, here is a Mystery"

I do however love the name, it fits the grand master, the angels of vengeance are a mystery, they have a secret, they are cursed.   So I have decided to use it and carry on the name that is semi official, since the conversion was done for white dwarf, was in white dwarf, and is the closest thing we have on extended fluff for the angels of vengeance, at least character wise.

and yes, he is fine cast now.  Much easier to work with, if you get a quality cast, which I got a pretty good cast of him surprisingly enough.  I used a grey resin sculpting putty, as I find this brand is easier for me to work with than green stuff, however green stuff does provide a smoother blend when trying to polish it smooth with the polishing end of the sculpting tool.  Go figure, pros and cons no matter the epoxy.    I will probably have him finished painting by weekends end, already got him primed, and started, face is done, red has basecoat, silver parts are finished, just gotta get the armor highlighted, weathered, cloth finished, and all the detailing done and base finished.  Its amazing how easily motivation to paint comes along when your painting cool models and have an easy paint scheme to follow, and you like the way the army is turning out.
