Order of the Devoted Knife

Hello B&C,

I'm making this thread to share my ideas for a DIY sisters order that I am building my army around, be they fluff, modelling or painting. Part 1 can be found on my blog via the link below:

http://praetorianmarines.wordpress.com/2013/01/16/introducing-the-order-of-the-devoted-knife-part-1/

I'd appreciate any feedback from you guys, particularly on the fluff and colour scheme choices. Plus if I show you guys my progress it will help push me to get the army painted quicker!

So Is everything up to snuff?

Thanks for looking!

I like the colour scheme, and the knives are very impressive - are they freehand?

Winged Celestine is one of my pet peeves - she's supposedly a Repentia who survived against the odds, found a suit of armour and was raised to sainthood, imbued with the power of Saint Katherine. Not on the artwork, not on the model, and certainly not in the fluff does it say anywhere that she has literal wings. That said, you (like me) aren't using her rules to literally represent Celestine, so I'll let your model stand under RoC. :P

On the other hand, your Sisters have a daemonic ally, so they need purging. Haven't really seen any other fluff so far, so I can't comment on that. The models look good (not sure about ol' teeth-pin-grenade girl, but she's a difficult one at the best of times).

haha, i love that when you lose to someone in close combat you can say:

YOU PUNCHED THE HIGHLIGHTS OUT OF HER HAIR!

also, the idea of a counts-as celestine that might actually not be a "good" thing, pretty awesome.

(i can totally see tzeentch meddling with their devotion, and tricking them into falling)

Hey guys thanks for the responses!

The whole Celestine thing is deliberatly vague, Partly because I'm not sure which way to take it. Furyou, I thought I'd read somewhere that there are other things in the warp besides deamons... Though I'm not saying she's not, either :P

derpa, I'm totally saying that next time lol. I would have had chance last night, but her squad actually killed a Deamon prince in Cc lol

Edit: I forgot to ask if anyone has any name ideas for not-celestine?

Any name ending with -ela would be good, too (-el denotes divinity, the a makes it feminine). For example, Michaela, Gabriella

>> Actually, I can't think of another -ela name at the moment. Some angel names are already acceptably feminine to the modern ear, although I expect they sound rather strange in hebrew (Ephrael and Gabriel are the only ones that comes to mind, and Gabriel is normally for boys these days).

'Rising up', huh, Jaci?

Thanks again for the ideas, guys :D

Jacinda I decided to do some googling about what you said, but apparantly Jacinda is greek for beautiful, or spanish for hyacinth!

So instead I searched for names meaning 'rising' or 'ascending' and came up with Aliyah which is Hebrew, like Furyou mentioned.

So perhaps the Order call her 'the spirit of Aliyah' or something... Since she is more of a strange entity then a person.

Again, I really appreciate the help, and I have a game tonight so hopefully my ragtag order can do better then last time (I had the most horrendous luck and not-celestine/waited until the 5th turn to return to life :P).

or something stolen from (the english version of) my favorite manga ever...

"alita" supposedly means "winged" and just plain sounds awesome, but then i'm biased, too. lol

Yes apparantly its a variation of 'alida' which means 'Small-winged one' lol

Which manga is that?

Funny side note... there are 2 other sisters players at my gaming club, but I seem to be the only one actively playing them at the moment. Conversely, there is only one other Codex: Space Marines player!

Both the other sisters players are women. I'm not sure what that says about me... ermm.gif

yup. battle angel alita XD

i've always been partial to the japanese character name, tho: gally.

i've now got just a shade under 1000 points and i'm the only sisters player at my store. someone heard i was building an army and was like "man you must be some kind of masochist or something" and we both laughed. the joys of an all metal army. lol

Long time no update...  Deary me, how side-tracked do I get by life?

Anyhoos, since I'm vowed to the ETL 2, I figured I'd do a play-by-play update thing so there's a record of the army as it develops.

Also I need to make sure I got a fully painted army for the Tournament in July!  So basically my 40k time for the next few months is going to be Sisters and Eldar :p

So without further ado, the results of Day 1:

So we have the Immolator gunner with the flats painted, and a squad of Battle sisters all glued up, filed and primed.  Just need some green stuff to plug the bases and then they're all ready for painting!  Not too exciting so far, but as this is a WIP i figured id post each stage of progress.  Day 2 will be Monday at the latest, since tomorrow I'll be spending the whole day playing Pathfinder :)

Day 2:

Started on the flats, doing the skin and blacks... didn't quite finish though!  With all my sisters units I'm going for a large range of ethnicities.

Day 3 & 4:

Finished all the flats except for the silver and greys!  Can you tell I'm a slow painter yet?  Hopefully on day 5 I'll be able to finish the shading.

I am going to paint the sister superior at a later date, since she will be using a different colour scheme!

Day 8:

Almost finished the models and the Immolator pilot.  But still have the whites to touch up and highlight, and some last details and iconography to paint before I get started on the bases.  The other squad members still need their blue highlights doing.

Decided the fairest skinned sister needed an eyepatch to go with her hot pink lipstick :p  I also want to mention that most of these models were acquired as a gift; they were previously slaanesh chaos sisters with tentacles and ash-grey skin, but now they are redeemed to the light of the Emperor!  What does this mean in practical terms?  Well, I have a whole load of freehand fleur de lys to paint where the icons have been shaved off :p

I've figured out some ways to speed up the battle sister painting process, since it is easily the longest thing to paint.  Progress has also been made on the exorcist as well, since it is almost fully built!

Bonus update, here is my Celestine counts as: the vision of the lady Aliyah.  Not part of ETL 2013 I'm afraid, since the model itself was already painted... but I've finally got around to finishing the base, and so will update again as soon as she and the sisters are done.

Thanks for looking!

Well it's time for another update, with some more pics of progress:

Firstly, here is the immolator turret with the interior painted, and the glass pane finally glued into place.

Now we have the Exorcist, fully built at last! (talk about a pain to put together...)

Then a Rhino which I made more Sisters-ee by using parts from the Immolator sprue (my favourite part is the sisters stormbolter!) :p

And finally the interior of the Rhino is also painted!

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p45/quistis333/20130703_210745_zpsbbd24fef.jpg

Since taking these pictures, all 4 vehicles in the ETL 2013 have been undercoated, and a whole bunch of other models are in various stages of preperation.  I have a squad of 8 more sisters which are currently undergoing the first flat colours, and a Death Cult Assassin & Sister Superior undergoing a test paint at the same time.  My faster method of painting the battle sisters is speeding things up, but I have been very busy of late!

So, current completed progress is 10 models; namely, those first shown above.  Full completed pictures will appear on a squad by squad basis :p

Thanks for reading!

I like the Sisterification of the Rhino, a little bit of work and suddenly it fits right in smile.png Well done on the Exo too, as much as I like the model I can't wait for it to get the plastic treatment!

Thanks! Yeah I specifically saved some from the Exorcist in order to make the Rhino look a bit cooler. A few decals and transfers should hopefully be enough to fill up any other large spaces.

I love the exorcist model, but it is a pain to make the peices stick, especially when there's always some warping in the big metal bits. It weighs a freaking ton and I'm always worried about whether the Plastic Rhino chassis can hold up the weight :p Still people around me never play against sisters and have no freaking clue what it is.

I'm going to be painting a load more infantry and then belt the vehicles out as quick as possible!

I find you have to worry about it being a bit top heavy towards the back, but as long as you're not driving up terrain features it's usually fine. Once you've completed the paint job the Exo will be a nice centrepiece of the army as it's a pretty fancy model. Along with pulverising your enemies your opponents will soon know what it is :P

  • 2 years later...

Been a long time since I've updated this thread, but since it's ETL time again I figured I'd show the WIP and individual finished models of my vow as they occur.  Managed to get most of the first Penitent Engine done!
