LPC Vow Thread

MadGreek

Recommended Posts

I, MadGreek of the Blood Bulls (Blood Angels Successor and Sub-Forum) vow on the honour of my Chapter to paint and present one ten marine Death Company Squad, and 2 converted Thunderhammer Stormshield Terminators, on or before the 31st of March, 2013. I promise to provide at least two WIP updates, preferably with pictures, in that time. I vow that if I should fail, I will provide the Librarium with an article and wear the Signature of Shame until my penitence period is done.

I know those are Minotaur Brass Etch, but I am building them on Blood Angel Codex - hence the Blood Bulls name.

Close up of Spear to be used as counts as Thunder Hammer, one trimmed up for brass rod insertion

Two part mold made from Rapid Mold Sticks so I can arm the whole squad with shields that match Molocs - cause its cool

Results of the shield mold. Fairly happy with the results. Just need some cleaning up.

2nd Term, its Lysander cut down to give him the same Shield and Spear. Still working on cutting out his head, my dremel bit is a bit dull.

10 Man Death Company Done. Noticed a couple spots I missed when I saw the photos, fixed them. Only camera I have right now is my phone. http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t371/MDemetris/DC%20and%20Termies/IMAG0815_zps485af0e2.jpghttp://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t371/MDemetris/DC%20and%20Termies/IMAG0814_zpsa92f5bb9.jpghttp://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t371/MDemetris/DC%20and%20Termies/IMAG0812_zps26ca8abf.jpghttp://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t371/MDemetris/DC%20and%20Termies/IMAG0810_zpsc4f40004.jpg I went dark Charcoal Grey instead of Black. Head swaps, Chain Glaives, and the Power Axe by Anvil Industry.

Well done. I think they're great. smile.png And a welcome boost to the BA effort.

how? how you can call this result "well"??

he just dropped minis in blue paint ... horrble.

OK, first of all, I acknowledged I missed a couple spots that were not as easy to see with the naked eye as in the picture. I am fixing all that. Taranis was being supportive, perhaps acknowledging the "modeling" was decent, even with a painting question. You should try that. Being supportive, or giving advice. Here Ill write your post how it should have been. "Looks like your paint needs some touch up, but a good effort." Or you could have said nothing. Your post as made was useless. Also, perhaps your a bit color blind, but the ONLY blue paint is on the various power items - fist, hammer, spear, and axe. The rest is Charcoal Grey. I know I am biased, but I certainly don't think they are "Horrible." Oh, and you misspelled horrible.

OK, first TH/SS Termie done.

First a view of him next to the original model - I had 2 - to show the conversion.

http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t371/MDemetris/DC%20and%20Termies/IMAG0817_zps29fdd8f4.jpgJust him, closer to show detail.  I did a bit better on the paint coverage on this guy.  Still, they look better "in person" than they do close up with my phone camera.

Let's try to keep this constructive.

I'm personally a fan of the Chain Glaives. Great Idea, and solid mold work on those shields.

I'm a great fan of the bronze metallic and use it as my gold. I find "normal" gold too pale. My Dante got reasonable. My personal experience is that the best effect is not as the primary color. I've seen some models to prove me wrong. Bear in mind that it'll be several decades before I might enter a golden demon competition.....

I :) you posing and modelling results.

Kem, posts like yours are not helpful to anyone. Not everyone was born a great painter and mean-spirited responses like yours just discourage people and drag them down.

@MadGreek - A+ for effort, brother. I like your conversions. Very good application of a Greek theme across the army. For the painting, even if you don't feel equal the task of multiple highlights just yet, I think a wash would really take your miniatures up a notch and give them more depth. I've found the new line of Citadel washes work quite well and do not need to be watered down - you can use them right out if the pot. An Agrax Earthshade was would work well on the bronze and Nuln Oil on the Death Company.

I found with my own painting that mastering kind technique at a time was a good way to go. Started with miniatures similar to yours, then started washes, then worked up to highlighting later.

It's expensive, but I found the "How to Paint Citadel Miniatures" book helpful.

Sorry -- flipped my iPhone sideways for a closer look and see that you did use washes. Don't know what Kem was on about accusing you if just dipping your DC in blue paint. Just being a jerk I guess.

So you may want to consider adding some highlights.

Thanks for all the positive feedback ad suggestions.  Problem I am having is- I am trying to go right to the edge with each color, but not overlap them. Didn't want to have to paint red back over Black or Bronze.  Worried about it showing through or starting to get too thick.  With my eyes not being quite what they were, even with my reading glasses on, they looked OK, and I figured the washes would cover any minor mistakes.  I was wrong.  With the camera lens bringing everything loser like that, the mistakes really got amplified.  In person they look better.  I think I need more light as well, in my work area.  Also, I had hoped that by using the charcoal, instead of straight black, that shading with Badab Black would fill i the cracks ad provide some auto highlights with the charcoal coming through.  Didn't quite work as I had hoped.  I will attempt some lighter grey shading after I finish the 2nd Termie for my vow.  As a positive, I am getting better at my modeling - hollowing out the spear bits, adding the brass rod, molding those shields with Green Stuff/Milliput and using the mold sticks.  I was really happy with the conversion from the Dark Vengeance Termie to my model. Just need practice with my painting.  A lot of m friends get there stuff painted for them, but I want to get better myself.

Thanks for all the positive feedback ad suggestions....................but I want to get better myself.

You're welcome. :) regarding metallic colours its my experience that they cover quite well.

Give a man a fish and he's fed for one day. Teach him to fish and he'll never starve again. Knowledge is strength. I'm working on improving my own painting as well. :)

First of all, allow me to say that your conversion job is amazing! I love the Romanesque look and youve clearly gone to extreme lengths to get the results you desire from your minis! Your paint job is great and with time it'll only get better! Get used to applying the colours and when you're comfortable, you will allow yourself to experiment further like the rest of us! Hey it took me 20 years of painting and I'm still not that great and i still paint really slowly. Just enjoy the experience brother!

You...are an idiot... Do you not realize that painting is a new skill that everyone who plays warhammer eventually learns? Were not pros. Were just a bunch of guys and girls who like the romantic aspect of war and are thrown into painting. Sure some people are born with it, but 99% of the rest of us are just having fun and dont need tactless philistines to come in out of the blue and rip on someone just because you yourself have some insecurities and just feel the need to take it out on others. Grow up and get a life, bozo!

Admins....ill take that warning now :)

Thanks. Yes, I like the modeling part of it, thats where I am trying things out. Lots of knife, dremmel, and drill work. Even from one to the next, I think I did better on the spear grip for the 2nd Termie (Lysander conversion) for my vow. The picture will be up later tonight or tomoorw - in time to complete my vow. smile.png

Great job so far, it`s always fascinating to see other peoples imaginations come to life and I love your conversions.  Can`t wait to see more!!

Also, don`t worry so much about staying in the lines and just do touch ups once your finished with majority colours, takes the pressure off and allows it to be more fun and experimental when your expecting to make mistakes, instead of worrying about trying to prevent them : )

OK, final Termie conversion done.  Vow complete.

This is the Lysander metal model head dremmeled out, new shield, Hammer cut off and spear added.  Thanks to Winterdyne Commission Modelling for the Spartan Infantry Equipment Set where I got the Spear.  I drilled it out and used brass rod to make it more durable, but the pieces are great.  Thanks again to Anvil Industry for the Spartan Helmets on all the models - and my whole army in progress.  Shields are molded from Molocs, and the Shoulder Pads are Forgeworld.
