The first DA book in the series, just tells about the Lion's war on the beasts of Caliban, the unification of the planet under the Emperor, etc. etc. Timewise, you don't need to have read any other books to know what is going on. Of course, the second book is almost a direct sequel, so if you don't read the first some of it is lost upon you...Hmm...that seems convoluted.
