Gaffy
Hello Brothers, Been lurking, and supplying the odd comment now and then - but I'm going to try and post some pictures of my force here, as I'm getting more and more of it put together - for feedback, inspiration and motivation. Wee bit of backstory - got started on the hobby last year, and have since expanded my pile of plastic, resin and pewter from a single Space Wolves battleforce, to around 3-3,5k points worth of wolves - and a small IG attachment. If that wasn't supposed to be enough, after I had put everything together - and painted 20-25 Grey Hunters, I fell in love with the look of the of the "pre heresy" conversion done by Adam over at the Space Wolves blog. So - 30 stripped, and disassembled Grey Hunters later - and a few boxes of Chaos Warriors - I've painstakingly been putting my force back together, and have finally begun putting some paint on these puppies again! Sample Grey Hunters: http://i.imm.io/T8No.jpeg Cloak shot: http://i.imm.io/T8Ri.jpeg Still missing a few details, might do a bit more blending on the cloaks - but they look a bit less garish in real life. And still not quite sure how I'm going to base them. Have thought about getting rid of the normal bases, and buying some resin ones. Any and all critique is welcome :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269831-got-almost-3k-points-ahead-of-me-the-fist-step/ Share on other sites
Motorbike Mike
Nice work! I don't think the cloaks look gharish at all, to be honest. I like the bare-arms, I did something similar to some Blood Claws with Catachan arms for a commission last year. I would say though, the Chaos Warrior conversion is a nice one and you've done it right, but I don't think I would have done the entire squad with it. To me, a cloak and a large pelt is a sign of might, something a leader or hero would wear, not a rank and file model. I tend to keep them to my Battle Leaders, Wolf Guard etc. All round really nice though, impressive. Mike. Squark
Question- How do these guys compare height-wise to a normal marine? i've been assembling a couple of chaos-warrior conversions for a couple of wolf guard and my wolf priest, and the wolf guard both ended up looking like giants (I learned a bit from working with them, and flattened the pelvis bit for the Wolf Priest, so he's only a little bit taller than the rest of my Marines, although I am going to have to cover that bit up with a Tabard or something). Two other comments; 1) you might want to try cutting out the thigh armor from the chaos warriors model and using it to cover the seams where the legs and torso meet, like Adam did in the tutorial. Up to you, really. 2) I personally was planning to do the skull talismans in gold, since it felt odd for my Space Wolves to be carrying human skulls- But if it's just a replica, then it's just one of the many "images of the holy human form" you find throughout the imperium. They are pretty much the same size - kinda depends on how you do it, a small pic for size comparison: http://i.imm.io/T90a.jpeg @Mike and Squark, I thought about doing that - but it almost makes the conversion takes twice the amount of time, because you have to be really careful when you cut those armor plates off. And regarding the human skulls - there are plenty of human enemies for the Imperium to battle - it might be taken form Chaos dudes - but come to think on it, being "pre-heresy" that does not add up.. :P And when having to do 30-35 marines, and a few leaders - it became a question of "good enough" -the same goes for my pain job of these rank and file - my HQ's and some of the larger units are going to get a bit more love. Just to give an idea of what I have ahead of me: http://i.imm.io/T91y.jpeg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269831-got-almost-3k-points-ahead-of-me-the-fist-step/#findComment-3287115 Share on other sites

Squark
Huh... Did you cut off the excess bit of torso on the cloak that would be going beneath the Belt? Leaving that on could be why my Wolf Priest is still a bit taller than his charges. Gaffy
Yeah - I just pretty much just cut just under the belt, cleaned the edges a bit - and then put green-stuff in the torso after gluing it to the cloak - after that: just stick it on the legs. Gaffy
Update! finally got around to painting again, got 30 completed Grey Hunters, and I've gotten some resin bases for all of them; "Runic Mountain" from Secret Weapon - they are really nice! Got inspired by some awesome painter to do a tattoo, can't remember how did it but was not my idea: I made the blending on the cloaks smoother, and added some dirty snow to the edge: I have even gotten around to painting up some Land Speeders (not done yet - but getting there) All comments welcome :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269831-got-almost-3k-points-ahead-of-me-the-fist-step/#findComment-3357163 Share on other sites
Greylocke
Awesome snow effects. I especially like the ragged iced edges on the cape. Cool tattoo work as well. I'm still working on that skill. Any tricks of the trade you can pass on in that area? Gaffy
Snow: I use a 1:1:1:1 ratio of White-glue, White paint, baking soda and army painter snow flow (finegrained white "sand") - mix it and apply/smear on with an old brush - and then sprinkle with a bit of baking soda, and then just let dry. The tattoo: I mixed black and a dark blue (gw deadly nightshade) in a 1:1 ratio, thinned it just a bit to get it to flow better from my finest detail brush - and apply the tatoo. Normally i paint SW faces: Bronzed Flesh -> elf flesh -> ogryn wash -> drybrush a bit of lighter elf flesh (1:1 with white). I paint on the tattoo after the layer of elf flesh, and then make a VERY thin elf flesh, and paint over the tattoo once or twice to get it to blend better. Gaffy
They are Beastmen Gor shields - but I think they got some new models or something since I bought them from a bitz dealer on ebay, since the onces I can find on GW's homepage seem slightly different - but it's a place to start :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/269831-got-almost-3k-points-ahead-of-me-the-fist-step/#findComment-3357789 Share on other sites
Kassill
Excellent excellent work brother! Your painting and conversions are worthy of a great saga! I like the attention to detail you've put into these models, like the tattoos for example. Very well done and executed. I look forward to seeing more from you. And welcome to the Fang!
