Allies for Space Wolves, Who to pick?

from a fluff point of view it is actually more logical to ally with any imperial guard regiment, then it is to bring the aetguards outside of fenris to fight a war in some unknown city. I actually can't recall any reference to the aett guard fighting aongside space wolves outside of the fang.

here's a very basic list of what i would add as allies to guard, if you want them to add in a flier.

-company command squad 85 pts

mortar, master of ordance

-platoon 235

PCS: autocannon

inf. sqd.: autocannon

inf.sqd.: autocannon

hvy. wpn.: 3xautocannon

-vendetta: 130 pts

that's 450 pts and form a great firebase while still giving you the flier you wanted. while the infantry platoon may seem expensive pts wise you do need to substract atleast 115 pts , the pointcost of a 5 man grey hunter pack in razorback you would otherwise buy to guard your own objective. as a guard player I have to admit it's not the flyers that i found to be most usefull, but the variety of tanks they can field. some of those alpha strikes are just brutal

I think that in terms of fluff, playing allies of convenience can be really interesting. As far as I'm concerned, the fluff is often the bonus. So if I actually used C:DA for allies, I'd probably keep them as DA, in terms of fluff.

Question: Who here prefers to "reskin" the allied detachment to be cohesive with the main force? I find myself drawn towards this, often. If I allied with Blood angels, I'd be very tempted to paint them up as 13th company, etc etc.

Lastly, the nice thing about C:SM as allies is that there are TONS of good special characters and special rules to draw on. For just about any army build, there's a Chapter tactics worth your consideration, IMO (especially if you're willing to consider all the extra material put out there by forge world).

This occurs multiple times in the Ragnar Blackmane novels, including Grey Hunter where it is mentioned that bondsmen stood guard at Garm's tomb and there are multiple mentions of bondsmen guarding Space Wolf ships while the Wolves board enemy vessels.

While on the ground there is considerably less instance of this it is not unprecedented in Space Marine background, both the Soul Drinkers books and the recent Space Marine Battles book Wrath of Iron mention Chapter serfs deployed alongside and in support of the Astartes.

It may not be particularly fluffy to have Skaerls storming an contested city alongside the Space Wolves themselves there is plenty of room to have them as supporting allies if that is what a player wishes. In particular I use the Skaerls in missions where I am defending something, representing Chapter support staff deployed to prepare defensive positions for the Astartes and if need be assist in the defense.

black knights modelled as wolves/wulfen etc could be cool (I heard they have rending but dex still hasnt arrived), meanwhile a DAs terminator libby PFG to confer 4++ in a DW land raider along with cmd squad with standard of dakka would rock, well actually it rocks with pretty much anything but thats besides the point. The land raider is also exceptionally hard to kill with only a 1/8 chance of being destroyed by melta.

From the sounds of it, BKs are pretty awesome. +1 str, rending, and they have grenades that reduce an enemy's initiative or something like that? I'd love to pack some ravenwing but the fact that I couldn't attach rune priests to the unit makes me very, very sad!

At the moment I'm kinda impressed by how well Mantis Warriors seem to gell with Bran Redmaw's company. Of course, you'd probably want to re-fluff the MW...

with so much dark angels stuff going on why don't you put on your dress right away lass!?

sillyness aside i think DA are really not the allies we need. what can they do better then us?

Hrmm... Due to the more expensive Upgrades, tactical squads are out, although sniper scouts who score are never a bad thing (But you could get them from Codex: Space Marines, and they'd be battle brothers). HQ-wise, the librarian is out as all he brings that Space Wolves don't is Telepathy (Well, that you want, anyway), and the runic weapon tries to cancel his psychic powers. The Jetfighter isn't bad, but the Storm Talon, Vendetta, and Stormraven all outperform it for what we want it for (anti-aircraft duty). Nothing spectacular in heavy support, which leaves elites. Now, I haven't looked at the codex apart from a brief glance, so I don't know how Deathwing Knights stack up against our termies- I think were looking at ~10 points more expensive, but a 3++ save and those abilities are probably worth it. Still, you could get 5 Assault terminators from Codex: Marine allies instead, and once again, battle brothers.

Conclusion: A couple things that aren't bad, but almost all of what Space Wolves want from Codex:Dark Angels can be found in Codex: Space Marines, but C:SM is battle brothers (Which opens up a variety of nice things), and has other goodies like Thunderfire Cannons, Null Zone Librarians, and the like. Also, if you want biker allies, C:SM is the only way to go.
