Displacer field Shenanigans?

Not really, seeing as an Iron Halo is standard kit. I see the displacer field as best for a Librarian, who is the only base HQ without an invulnerable save. Sure, a Techmarine could have one too, but, to me, "Techmarine" just screams "power field". That could just be the Big Mek in me talking though.

They are scattered like a droppod, they won't go where they can't.

Ok, if a droppod scatters off the table it is effected by the deepstrike mishap table. so now what? Though I admit it may be faq'ed.

Edited.

I looked at the FAQ and it will stop as short as possible from impassable terrain on landing on another model . the movement is in any direction.

So my last question would be.

What Is "off the table" classified as?

With luck this will end my inquire.

Challenges don't need to be formal issued challenges, just think of every film ever where the hero ends up fighting the main villain one on one despite a whole battle going on around them... Batman still found Bane. What they do is they provide interesting tactical options for maximising your damage or minimising enemy characters attacks. They also add a cinematic element which has always been prevelant in the stories and fluuf but now has a place in the game.

If you think of them as Calgar taking off his power armoured Gauntlet of Macragge and slapping an pheonix lord in the face before facing off it seems wrong, but thats not how they throw down, its more like they are obviously going to end up fighting each other while their units are occupied.

And if it were a matter of attacking Character "challenges",

-defending Character "accepts the challenge" and ends up in BtB with the Challenger but otherwise the combat were fought as normal (anyone in BtB with the Characters can strike them)

- or -

-defending Character "refuses the challenge" and the attacking unit counts as having scored 1 additional Wound per cowards W characteristic when resolving the combat - fine(or some equivalent penalty).

I'd be fine with that. It's the whole lone xenos Character charges a Space Marine unit and either crushes the non-CC Independent Character in solo combat or he sulks in the back contributing nothing to the fight that just breaks "the narrative" of the game for me. I don't see most species (except maybe Chaos, Dark Eldar, and Orks) allow their specialist Charcters to get thrown under the bus for notions of "honor", especially units of professional soldiers and swarms of 'Nids.

"Off the table" is off the table, it's not Impassible Terrain (otherwise Broken units wouldn't be able to Flee "off the table").

Odd as it seems, there may be some help in the Dark Eldar army for this kind of thing. Hellions have a thing called a stun claw that when they hit and run can snatch a character out of the opposing squad however:

Q: Can a Helliarch’s stun claw be used to ‘snatch’ enemy Independent

Characters who are involved in a challenge? (p28)

A: No.

Q: When a unit of Hellions performs a Hit and Run attack, taking

an independent character with them, what happens if, once the Hit

and Run move has been resolved, the independent character is within

2" of a friendly unit? (p28)

A: You will need to move the independent character the

minimum distance possible so that he is not within 2" of a

friendly model.

And with regard to the special character of Drazhar:

Q: Can Drazhar’s Darting Strike special rule be used to remove Drazhar

from a Challenge he is involved in, or into a challenge he is not involved

in? (p52)

A: No.

While the RAW say what they say as we have been discussing, the way they deal with similar issues in the DE FAQ probably tells us how they are likely to deal with similar issues with the displacer field.
