White Grey Knights

So after being away from the hobby for a good few years due to work and having kids I decided I missed it and wanted to get back into it. I spent a while trying to choose a new army project. Really wanted to try Sisters of Battle but there seems to be little GW support in terms of new models and codex so I then decided I wanted to try white power armour. Decided on White Scars but then went off the idea as I have a massive Ultramarine army and wanted something a bit different.

I then saw a pic, possibly on this forum, of a Grey Knight painted white and loved it. So I dusted off my old Grey Knight army, bought a few models and went from there.

So here are a few pics of how i'm getting on so far. I'm not the greatest painter but I'm pleased with how most of them came out. For all my old metal models I'm having to strip them and repaint and I sometimes think they dont come out as well as the new plastic models.

Anyway here are some pics of my WIP. Constructive critisism welcome.

My old grey/silver army:

New plastic Terminator squad:

New Dreadknight:

Repainted metal Stern:

Wyches as DCA:

So far:

So i still have a few metal marines to repaint, as well as the forge world Dreadnought. Then I have a Storm Raven to paint. The more marines and terminators to buy as well as adding to the inquisitor and warband. I'll update as I go if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the positives replies. I will update as I go.

@Togusa, that wych is an old metal dark eldar called Kruella the Vile (I'm pretty sure) that i had lying around. I converted her to give her the sword and spear. The model originally is armed with wrist shooty things.

Doing things like the DCAs gives me a break from painting white.

Just a small update;

Repainted metal marines with incinerators;

Last of the repainted metal terminators done, including giving a banner to one;

So i just have a few marines left to strip and repaint then i can finally move onto building the Stormraven, and repainting my Dreadnought.  Then i can buy new stuff!

Love the new color scheme.  The white is definitely "cleaner" and pops to the eye.

When you make your Stormraven I can't recommend enough that you either use an aftermarket mod kit or modify it with plasticard to elongate the fuselage / cargo area.  There are several examples on this site to show what I mean.

Excellent work !

I used the kit from chapterhouse studios.. adds about 6'' to the length.. i have done a few smaller conversions to make it look like a little thunderhawk (kinda)

Most recent update;

Dreadnought repainted. I didnt strip this guy just painted over the old paint job. Am not 100% happy with it and may strip and repaint again at a later date:

My army so far. Mostly repaints. Only a terminator sqaud, the Dreadknight and 4 assassins are newly bought:

So am finally going to start building my Stormraven. I have an inquisitor and warband to repaint/spruce up, a couple of rhinos to paint and also can finally start buying some new plastic marines.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick note to say that, if anyones interested, I do plan to keep this updated but I'm off to Oz for a few weeks so wont be posting much.

I've finally started my Stormraven but I'll not get it finished till i get back. Love the model, hope i can do it justice. On a side note if anyone has any tips for painting murals on the sides of vehicles i'd love to know.

After that i have some new marines to paint and I bought the Draigo figure too and i want to take my time with that. As well as the two rhinos i'm doing and the inquistor warband im sprucing up.

Lots to do!

Something you can try for the shading on the white is use a watered down nul oil or badab black.  It gives a nice effect with the white without going too dark.  I can't say it's better than what you've done already (because I've always loved that look), just different.

Thanks for the tip. (and your Grey Knights WiP look awesome). I do give my models a wash of nuln oil after the undercoat and once i've picked out the black/metalic areas. I try to use nuln oil near the end to pick out things like rivets too. Below is a pic of my models after a wash but before i've started on the white;

As you can see they do spend a little while being true Grey Knights before they become white.

Also a small update on my Stormraven;

@ Edge; The white is fairly simple;

undercoat of white primer

nuln oil wash the whole model after ive done all the black and metalic areas

2 coats of a thin mix of ceramite white and lahmian medium carefully avoiding all recesses

@ matchbox; steal away, i was inspired after seeing something similar on here or another website a while ago

The repaint was a good decision, they look a lot better than they did in the old scheme. I've seen white GKs before (on this forum I believe, almost certainly the same ones that inspired you) and I think the stark colour suits the minis well. It's a very good contrast for the red purity seals and heraldry.

I think you're right about the dread, if you strip and redo it it'll look better for it. There's quite a lot of paint buildup on its armour panels - a problem you're doing a good job of avoiding on the stormraven components, which have a nice smooth finish. The dread would fit with the army better if it was given the same treatment.

The only thing I don't like is the flat static grass of the bases; I don't think static grass should ever be used for full coverage, it looks better in clumps. Also makes it look  like they're standing in a field on some verdant agri-world, which doesn't seem a very likely place for grey knights to be fighting. That's a minor quibble, though.

Thanks for the feedback Kvlt, I think i will strip and repaint the dread when i clear my decks a little in the future.

As far as the bases go i totally agree. I was just talking to a friend recently about how lazy I am with basing a model once i've finished painting it. I spend about two mins on basing. With larger terminiator bases I stick a couple of rocks on and with characters I do try to put something on like the deamon head on Stern's base.

I'll need to look into it as i think good bases would improve the look a lot. Am thinking about ship decking maybe.
